The Rotary Club of Williamstown, Massachusetts

Club Number 6549; District 7890 Every Tuesday, Noon, The Williams Inn

September 2012 Bulletin

Gary Kriss, Editor; Anne R. Skinner, Editor Emerita

GET READY FOR A RAU-SING ROTARY RECEPTION . . .

for new District Governor Eileen Rau when she joins us at The Williams Inn for lunch and

learn at our September 25th joint meeting with the North Adams Rotary,

Eileen, a West Hartford resident, was the past president of that town’s

Rotary Club, Two months ago she was sworn in as Governor of District

7890, Which includes Williamstown and 61 other Rotary Clubs in Northern

Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.

What’s DG Eileen got planned for the coming year? We’re not going to tell,

but she will. So make sure you’ve marked your calendars: we want our

members to make a good showin’ at her tellin’!

A better Williamstown Rotary!

Fred Ley, the heart of our club, will now be “officially” joined by

the heart of his heart—his bride Janet—our new Honorary Member. (We expect to collect a lot of Happy Dollars in celebration, and not just from Fred!)

Just goes to show: you can’t get enough of a good thing!

TOO EASY? OKAY, NOW ADD TWO CLUBS

AND ONE STATE REP AND WHAT DO YOU GET?

A great joint meeting last month in North Adams

with its Rotary and Gailanne Cariddi, who up-dated

members on state actions important to our region.

In her report, Rep. Cariddi stressed community

development, infrastructure investment and job

creation. She also detailed measures taken

during this legislative session to improve education.

A discussion session followed her remarks.

NEED YOUR KATIE FIX?

Sad because at a meeting last month you thought

you heard the last from Katie Swoap, our

International Exchange Student (shown jumping

for joy on Page 1 as she prepares to bid

Williamstown Adiós and Argentina Hola)?

Well fear not, Pilgrim. Katie’s arrived safely, made

A gaggle of new friends—as you can see—and has

started a blog so we can share in her adventures

abroad! So set your trusty internet browser to:

And don’t forget to reply to Katie’s posts

and let her know We’re thinking about her.

(ROTARACT)ING UP AND RUNNING

Meet Laura Donnelly,

one of the co-presidents

of the Williams College

Chapter of Rotaract.

Laura’s already been

Busy—hard at work

promoting Rotaract

at the Purple Key Fair,

an annual Williams fall

event to Recruit

members for Campus

organizations.

Rotaract International is a worldwide network of

service clubs for college students. The Williams

Chapter works with our club to carry out

International service and awareness programs in

the greater Williamstown community. These have

included advocacy campaigns, fundraising

programs and international pen pal programs with

local youth.

Stay-tuned for what Rotaract has up its sleeve for

This Year and for on-going reports of the Chapter’s

activities.

READ ALL ABOUT IT—THE CLARK EXPOSED!!

The secrets of the Clark—past, present and future—were all laid bare for members of the Williamstown and North Adams Rotary Clubs late last month during a special meeting at the famed art museum. Arranged by our own Bill Powers, head of security at the Clark, a lunch in the private dining room was followed by a comprehensive overview of the museum, which included its current massive $180 million renovation and expansion. A “behind-the-scenes” tour of the Clark, which visitors generally never see, followed, capped off by a viewing of the current show of Chinese archaeological treasures. Below are some items that were on temporary loan to the Clark that day.

HALL TAKES ON LIGHTNING

AND BASEBALL STRIKES

There are some who believe that Allen Hall’s profession is baseball, including,

[pic]

on occasion, Allen himself. But last month, at a new member Show and Tell

meeting, Allen confessed that he actually is gainfully employed equipping planes with lightning protection as CEO of Pinnacle Lightning Protection in Pittsfield. (His wife, Valerie, who joins him above with Williamstown Rotary Baseball Commissioner Sam Humes. was on hand to keep him honest.) Allen gave a fascinating talk on how the need for aircraft lightning protection evolved and what goes into providing it. By meeting’s end all were convinced that Allen’s obsession with baseball, from umpiring to serving as president of the Williamstown Cal Ripken youth baseball league, was just a secondary interest.

NOT!
