PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
A physical property is observed with the senses and can be determined without destroying the object. For example, colour, shape, mass, length and odour are all examples of physical properties.
A chemical property indicates how a substance reacts with something else. The original substance is fundamentally changed in observing a chemical property. For example, iron rusting is a chemical property. The iron has reacted with oxygen and the original iron metal has changed. It now exists as iron oxide, a different substance.
Classify the following properties as either chemical (C) or physical (P);
1. Colour blue _____ 9. Hardness _____
2. Density _____ 10.Boiling point _____
3. Flammability _____ 11.Lustre _____
4. Solubility _____ 12.Odour _____
5. Supports combustion _____ 13.Reacts with water to _____
form a gas
6. Sour taste _____
14.Reacts with a base to _____
7. Melting point _____ form water
8. Reacts with acid to _____ 15.Vinegar will react with _____
form H2 baking soda
Water and gasoline are both clear liquids at room temperature. Describe one physical property and one chemical property that might be used to distinguish between them.
