HAGGAI in the CONTEXT of IMMANUEL, “God With Us”WOW, Spring 2021SMALL GROUP DISCUSSIONWeek # 4 2 Kings 25:1—10 and 2 Chronicles 36:22-23 KEY VERSE: 2 Chronicles 36:22 “In the first yar of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and put it in writing.”Pray as you begin your study at home or in your small group (over the phone or other “virtual” gathering with a few or even just one WOW sister during these weird days Covid).1. For perspective on this lesson, if you can, think back on a time in your life when you thought that “all is lost”. This might be a time of grief concerning the death of someone you love or any other time of loss that left you, even for a season—long or short, feeling forsaken, abandoned or deeply hurt. Read this week’s passage. SLOWLY, and THOUGHTFULLY. OBSERVATION of what the passage says and how the passage says it (details, repetitions, conjunctions…)Verses 2 Kings 25:1-6a (Note: January 15, 588 BC)1. Identify the characters in these verses and summarize what they do. 2. What is the time frame indicated in verses 1 and 2, for the “siege works” that surrounded Jerusalem? Verses 2 Kings 25:11-6b-10 3. Identify the two episodes in these verses and those involved and what happened. 4. Read through the 2 Kings passage as a whole and ask yourself, “what’s/who’s missing”? Verses 2 Chronicles 36:22-23 (NOTE: 539 BC)5. Note the characters and what happens in this brief passage.INTERPRETATION—working to understand the passage in its own context, “there and then” means God’s people are subject to the prophecy of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel that the cost of breaking God’s covenant as His people would result in exile (see Deut. 28:36, Lev. 26:33) from the land promised to Abraham. Verses 2 Kings 25:1-6a6. Consider the length of time Jerusalem (and all its people) was completely cut off and surrounded by its enemies (see v. 1 & 2 and the beginning of v. 3 to calculate this time). How does this passage show the motivation of what’s left of the Judean army to break through the wall and lead a flight from the city?7. What might the capture of Judah’s last king mean to these famine-ridden, frightened, and fleeing people mean?Verses 2 Kings 25:11-6b-10 (Note: “Riblah” is on the northern edge of Canaan and the king of Babylon used it as his headquarters for the conquest of Canaan’s territories.)8. Why would the killing of King Zedekiah of Judah’s sons be important to Nebuchadnezzar and his Empire?9. Look up Ezekiel 12:13 and summarize how this prophecy is fulfilled in this passage.Verses 2 Chronicles 36:22-23 (Note: Recall from what you learned last week—the difference between when Kings and Chronicles were written.)10.. Go back one verse and read 2 Chronicles 36:21 that proceeds the passage you’ve read above. Why do you think the Chronicles, as God breathed this word, comes to an end with these last three verses?APPLICATION: your response as a disciple of Jesus in the “here and now” of your life, congregation, community, and world. Verses2 Kings 25:1—10 and 2 Chronicles 36: (21) 22-23 11. How might a challenging account of the history of Judah help you reflect more deeply on what it means to “fear the Lord” as the beginning of Wisdom (Proverbs 17)? ................
