Foreword
There is no higher calling than when a person gives his or her own knowledge, skills, time or resources to someone in need of help or comfort. This is the fundamental principle of volunteerism.

Shifting socio-economic and environmental trends are changing how people volunteer. In addition to structured volunteer programmes, increasingly people are contributing to their communities informally. For example, during disasters, Our aspviroaltuionntefoers2a0r1e0taaknidngbeaycotinodn iosntloineenocrouvoralugnetaeesrpinirigt from their workplace with the of togethernesesn.cTohueraRgeedmCernotsosfRtehdeiCr reemscpelonyt ewr.illRinecgraeradsliensgslyobf ethe form it takes, volunteering an agent of crheamngaeinins amnineds-sseenttsiaalnddriavtetirtuodf epsolaitsictaol, hsoowciwalealnivde, economic development. A case in point: Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers contributed to the 2000 Global Polio Initiative which the United Nations, in valuing the total effort at 10 billion US dollars, described as "far beyond the reach of governments or international and national organizations".
I am sure that upon reading this report, you will join me in celebrating the
achievements of the many millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers.
