|5 |I Can’t Hear You |

|10 |Teens have always listened to music at dangerously high levels. But due to new technologies, loss of hearing in teens has increased by 30% |

|15 |in the last ten years. There are several causes. |

|20 |Scientists say that personal music devices like iPods are the main cause. In the past, Walkmans were popular, but when they were played at |

|25 |high volumes, the sound was not clear so listeners would turn the music down. Today, digital sound remains clear at all volumes. |

| |The length of time that teens listen to loud music is also a cause of hearing loss. Personal devices in the past used regular batteries, |

| |which ran down after several hours. Today, teens |

| |can listen to their devices for almost 24-40 hours. |

| |The popular use of tight-fitting earbuds rather than headphones that are placed on the ear has also added to the problem. When listening to |

| |music through earbuds, the sound passes straight to the eardrums, which are easily damaged. It’s not surprising that one out of five |

| |teenagers in the U.S. suffers from hearing loss. |

| |To fight this health hazard, the city of New York has recently placed public service ads in subways. These ads include two photos. One photo|

| |shows an ear with an earbud, which is labeled “Hear Today”. The other photo, which is of an ear with a hearing aid, is labeled |

| |“Gone Tomorrow”. |

| |Moreover, popular musicians and individuals are trying to reach young people through special campaigns that encourage them to protect their |

| |hearing. Paul Stanley, the lead singer of KISS, says teens may not listen to a doctor, but they’ll listen to their favorite rock star. He |

| |participated in “Sound Rules!”, a fun event for teens to learn about “healthy listening”. |

| |Genna Martin, a college student, also found an original way to encourage people to protect their hearing. She fitted a used store mannequin |

| |with a sound level meter connected to a microphone in its ear and dressed it in trendy clothes. Genna went to the malls with the mannequin |

| |and invited curious onlookers to hook up their iPods to the mannequin’s ear to get a decibel reading. Many teens were shocked to learn that |

| |volume levels they thought were safe could actually destroy their hearing. |

| |Will teens understand that they need to protect their hearing by turning down their music? Genna Martin hopes so. If not, she warns, “by the|

| |time they’re 40 they won’t be able to hear anymore.” |
