|5 |Hans Christian Andersen |

|10 |The Fairy Tale King |

|15 |Hans Christian Andersen once said: “Life itself is the most wonderful fairy tale.” In many ways, Andersen’s life was like a fairy tale. |

|20 |Andersen was born in 1805 to a poor family in Odense, Denmark. His father died when he was 11 and Andersen went to work in a factory. He|

|25 |was a lonely boy who loved to tell stories, and even claimed that he would be famous some day. People in Odense made fun of him because |

| |they didn’t think he was talented, clever or handsome. Andersen knew that if |

| |he stayed in Odense, he would never fulfill his dreams, so he moved to Copenhagen when |

| |he was 14. |

| |In Copenhagen, he worked as a singer until his voice changed. Then he tried acting. Unfortunately, he couldn’t play a hero because he |

| |wasn’t good-looking, but he wasn’t ugly enough to play a villain. He tried to write plays, but he didn’t have the education to be a |

| |successful writer. Luckily, an older friend thought Andersen had potential and sent him back to school. Anderson was extremely unhappy |

| |at school. He was several years older than the other students, and the teachers made fun of him because he wanted to be a writer. |

| |Eventually, the friend heard about Andersen’s difficulties and hired a private tutor for him instead. Andersen then attended Copenhagen |

| |University and completed his studies there. |

| |After university, he traveled a lot and wrote some books, plays and stories which weren’t very successful. Although he was frustrated, |

| |he didn’t give up. When Andersen was thirty, he wrote his first book of fairy tales. Some of his most famous stories, such as The |

| |Princess and the Pea, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid and The Emperor’s New Clothes appeared in the book. People of all ages loved|

| |his stories because they could identify with the characters. Many of his stories were based on his own experiences as a poor, lonely boy|

| |who was different. The characters in his stories face many difficulties and have to struggle before they find happiness, just like |

| |Andersen did. |

| |In 1867, Hans Christian Andersen returned to Odense as a famous author. The city square was full of people who cheered him. The poor, |

| |lonely boy had become the “fairy tale king”. |
