Master of Public Health Degree Program

Master of Public Health Degree ProgramPerformance Objectives and AchievementsThe MPH Performance Objectives shown on the accompanying form were developed to inform students of the skills and knowledge needed for earning the MPH degree. They are organized around the three core functions of public health identified by the Institute of Medicine Committee for the Study of the Future of Public Health.ASSESSMENT involves monitoring the public’s health by collecting, assembling, analyzing, using and disseminating information about the health of the community. Assessment provides the framework for policy development. MPH performance objectives A1?-?A6 pertain to assessment.POLICY DEVELOPMENT is concerned with promoting the use of scientific knowledge in making decisions and setting priorities. Priorities are based not only on the size of health needs, but on what can be done to meet those needs by using existing technologies or by investing in research. Policy development provides the framework for assurance. Performance objectives B1?-?B6 focus on policy development.ASSURANCE is concerned with guaranteeing that the services necessary to achieve agreed-upon goals are in fact provided, either by encouraging actions of others (private or public), requiring action through regulation, providing funds and other resources, or providing services directly. Performance objectives C1 and C2 pertain to assurance.Additional performance objectives that are tailored to the individual interests or needs of the student can also be listed on the form. The Goals Statement should be prepared by the student prior to the evaluation committee meeting at the end of the first semester of enrollment. It can be changed to reflect changes in the student’s interests. The accompanying form is intended for use in documenting each MPH student's major learning experiences and accomplishments related to completion of his or her MPH degree program. This form should be updated at the end of every semester, in preparation for the Advisory Committee meeting. The student should review the performance objectives and enter on the form a brief description of any learning experiences that were relevant to any objective. These experiences may come from activities associated with formal course work (e.g., written papers, class projects, examinations), public health practice, thesis preparation, employment, or other professional endeavors (e.g., special assignments, conference presentations). The description should include evidence of the level or quality of the student’s performance taken from the assessments of others (e.g., course instructors, supervisors at work) and from self-assessments. The information contained on this form will be used by the Advisory Committee in evaluating the student’s progress each semester. Over time, Performance Objectives and Achievements form will constitute a cumulative record that documents the student’s acquisition of the knowledge and skills required to earn the MPH degree. In order to facilitate the periodic updating of this form, the student can make an individual copy on diskette, using one of the PC’S in the Computer Services Lab. The student should bring updated (paper) copies to the Advisory Committee meeting, and one of these copies should be affixed to the student’s folder. Discard outdated copies.Master of Public HealthPerformance Objectives and Achievements Form Name_______________________________ Module_________________ Date ___________________ First Enrolled ____________ semesterDescribe your professional or career goals and specific knowledge and skills you intend to acquire during your degree program.Performance ObjectivesFor each semester of your enrollment, use the space following each objective to briefly describe your key learning experiences and accomplishments related to that objective.
