Introduction:

Forensic Science is a multidisciplinary, elective course that provides students with an interactive and “hands-on” approach to understanding the nature of crime investigation.  Using deductive reasoning and critical thought processes, students will study and analyze various components of a criminal investigation including various types of physical evidence, DNA analysis, toxicology, serology, fingerprints, trace evidence, entomology.  Furthermore, students will be exposed to the history and evolution of forensic science through studying technological advancements and landmark criminal cases.

As we all know, our current situation is unique and I am sure that there may be issues that may arise. We will work together to overcome these challenges. I know we can do this and do it great!

Materials will need:

• A binder or plastic folder (your choice) not needed in Hybrid environment

• Pens and pencils (both)

• 1-2 packages of college ruled loose leaf paper

• Graph paper (small package)

• Ruler

• Calculator (graphing or scientific)

Expectations

• Arrive to class on time, phones will be kept in your bag – not your pocket or out on your desk, take out your Chromebook and be ready to work.

• If absent, you are responsible to any make-up missed work.  Missed work needs to be made up as soon as possible. Contact me after an absence to make up a schedule for make-up work.

• Expect to work. Fortunately much of what we will be doing is really interesting and group oriented, so you won’t notice how much work you do.

• We will do research. It is essential that your written work be legible and neat. I am hoping to go completely paperless in the hybrid environment. All of your work will be done in Google Docs and stored in Google Drive.

• All work will have specific due dates posted in Google classroom and will be submitted through google classroom. It is your responsibility to have your work neatly ordered (have a file titled Forensic Science, with sub-folders for each chapter. Every document you work on should be titled with your name and period.

• I will assign “Lab” groups. I will ask you to work together

Exams:

• Exams will cover one to two chapters of material, and consist of multiple choice, matching and essay questions.

• Makeup exams maybe different from the exam administered the day of the test, but will cover the same material and have alternate essay questions.

Homework/Classwork:

• Homework/Classwork will be assigned for every chapter.

• There will be times when you may choose to do your work by hand on loose-leaf paper, or a lab that requires graphing. So graph paper and loose leaf paper are items to have on hand.

• Un excused late work will only be accepted once per quarter, no later than one week after the due date for half credit. Work late due to an excused absence will follow the HHS Student handbook guidelines.

Labs/Projects:

• Projects will have specific due dates.

• Late projects will be penalized ten percent for each day late after the due date.

• Labs are to be neatly completed in pencil and submitted one week after the lab is completed, unless otherwise noted.

Grading

Exams/Projects/Labs - 70%

Homework/classwork - 30%
