Army opens house to Daegu community

CAMP WALKER, Daegu, Republic of Korea – The 20th Area Support Group is hosting an Armed Forces Day Open House for the public at the Army Heliport (H-805) here Saturday.

The event features static displays of United States and Republic of Korea Army aircraft, tactical vehicle systems and equipment, children’s games and some popular American barbecue foods. The event opens to the public at 10 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m.

A formal opening ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. with the playing of both the Korean and American national anthems, which will be followed by opening remarks by Col. James M. Joyner, the 20th ASG commander.

Also as part of the opening ceremony, the Walker Army Heliport will sign a partnership agreement with the ROKA 507th Attack Helicopter Battalion from K-2 Air Base in east Daegu. It will be followed by an award presentation to the Daegu police general for Korean National Police support provided throughout the year. The ceremony will conclude with musical entertainment by the 2nd Republic of Korea Army Band at 10:30 a.m. and a taekwondo demonstration by the Daegu Taekwondo Association at 11 a.m.

The static displays will open to the public following the ceremony. Visitors can get an up-close look at tactical systems such as the M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzer, M992 field artillery ammunition service vehicle, M1A1 Abrams main battle tank, M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, and the M1025 high mobility multipurpose-wheeled vehicle with MK19 grenade launcher.

Among the rotary wing aircraft scheduled to be on display are the Sikorsky UH-60L Black Hawk, Sikorsky UH-60Q MEDEVAC, Boeing AH-64 Apache, Beoing MH-47E Special Operations Chinook from the U.S. Army, and a Bell UH-1 Huey and Hughes MD500 Defender from the ROK Army. Each display will include English and Hangul language information boards, and a subject matter expert to answer questions.

Soldiers from the 4th Quartermaster Det. are planning to demonstrate how parachutes are rigged for airborne operations. The unit provides rigging and airdrop support to both U.S. and ROK forces.

Other special performances scheduled throughout the day include a mock jumpmaster door exhibition at noon by the 4th Quartermaster Det. (Airborne) from Camp Hialeah in Busan; military police working dogs demonstration at 1 p.m.; and a fire department response demonstration at 2:30 p.m.

A variety of activities will also be available to keep children entertained. Several organizations are sponsoring the Space Jumper, Feed the Monkey and Jurassic Park games. Visitors can also take free rides on a kiddie train provided by the U.S. Army Materiel Support Center-Korea from Camp Carroll.

Units participating in the Armed Forces Day Open House include the 4th Quartermaster Det.; HHC, 19th Theater Support Command; HHC, 20th Support Grp.; 23rd Chemical Bn.; 36th Signal Bn.; Co. C, 1-52nd Aviation Rgmt. (South Det.); Echo Co., 160th Special Operations Aviation Rgmt. (Airborne); 168th Medical Bn.; 188th Military Police Co.; 307th Signal Bn.; 377th Med. Co. (Air Ambulance) and the USAMSC-K. ROK Army units include the 2nd ROKA and the 507th Attack Helicopter Bn.

The third annual open house is intended to give both U.S. and Korean residents an opportunity to learn more about the U.S. Army mission in the ROK, and to foster better relations between the communities.

Due to security concerns backpacks, book bags and containers of any type will not be permitted inside the Camp Walker Army Heliport
