Instructions for Installing the B700 Series Apple® AirPrint™ Firmware

Please use one of the following methods to successfully install the newly downloaded Apple AirPrint™ firmware for the B700 Series printers. Either of the two methods listed below can be used to install the firmware. Neither is more efficient than the other. Simply follow the instructions for the method that is most appropriate for your particular situation and environment.

Prior to using one of the methods below you must determine what level of CU firmware is currently installed in the printer. Simply use the operator panel to access the printer’s built-in menu and print out the current configuration page for the printer. Please follow these steps to print the configuration page. Note: Please make certain there is paper in the tray before proceeding.

1) Press the “down” arrow on the operator panel. The “Functions” menu will appear.

5) Observe that the “Printer Menu Map” has successfully printed

Once you have printed the menu map look near the top of the first page for the “CU Version:” line. If the version number is “7.1b1” or higher then you can proceed to the instructions for one of the installation methods listed below. If the firmware version is below this level than you must contact Okidata support at 1-800-Oki-Data(1-800-654-3282) for special instructions.

If you have any concerns about following the steps, in either of the two methods listed below on your own, then contact Okidata support at the number listed above. One of our capable representatives will assist you or direct you to a local authorized dealer or service center which will be able to install it for you. Please remember this is not covered under the printer warranty since it is an upgrade to enhance the printer’s capability. So if you contact a local dealer or service center to perform the upgrade for you they can charge you for this service.

Method 1 – USB Flash Drive (32MB or larger)

If you do not as yet have the printer connected to your local network then this will be the best method of installation. So please follow the instructions below.

1) Format the USB flash drive from Windows making certain it is formatted for the FAT32 file system. Please consult the Windows help system for instructions on formatting the flash drive. Note: Formatting the flash drive will delete all of its contents. So remember to back-up or copy the entire contents of the flash drive to your computer so it can be restored to the flash drive after using it to install the firmware. If the flash drive is already formatted for the FAT32 file system then proceed to step “2)”.

2) Copy the previously downloaded “B700V121.lod” firmware file to the root of the USB flash drive you will be using to install it.

3) Print out the printer’s menu map to capture your current printer menu settings if you have not already done so. Please follow the instructions above to print the menu map. Note: Retain this for later as you will need to compare the current settings with the settings after the firmware upgrade and the menu reset.

4) Insert the flash drive into the USB host port located on the printer’s operator panel just to the left of the LCD.

5) The printer will emit a beep tone once it connects with the flash drive and the LCD will read “USB Drive”.

10) Remove the USB flash drive from the printer.

11) Perform a menu reset of the printer settings from the operator panel by accessing the “Menu Reset” option in the “Maintenance Menu” group in “Admin Setup” in the printer’s menu.

12) Print the printer menu map from the printer.

13) If the firmware has been successfully installed and the printer has been upgraded the version number on the “CU Version:” line on the first page will now read “12.1”.

14) Now compare the settings from the current printer menu map pages with the previous pages. Verify your current printer menu settings match the settings from the previous configuration pages you printed before the firmware upgrade. Note: Change the settings as needed so they match to avoid any unforeseen issues with the printed output and performance of the printer.

Method 2 – Network Installation (“Send File” link in printer’s web page)

Before proceeding with this method of installation please make certain the printer is connected to the same network as the computer you will be using to connect to the printer’s internal web page. Note: It is best to access the printer’s web page using the same computer where the firmware had been downloaded to previously. When you are ready to proceed, please follow the steps below.

1) Print out the printer’s menu configuration page to determine the network address assigned to the printer. It will be located in the “IP Address” line in the “Network” section on the first page of the menu configuration printout. It may appear something like this, “192.168.1.50”. Note: Retain this for later as you will need to compare these with the settings after the firmware upgrade and the menu reset.

2) Launch your favorite web browser, Internet Explorer, or similar.

3) Enter the printer’s IP address into the address bar in the web browser then press “Enter” on the keyboard.

4) In a moment the printer’s web page will be displayed in the browser window on the monitor.

6) Click on the “Browse” button next to the “Select File:” list box in the right window of the web page.

10) Click on the “Send” button below the “Select File:” list box in the web page.

11) Observe that the printer’s LCD is now displaying the progress of the firmware installation. Note: Please Do Not Turn Off the printer during the firmware upgrade process. The upgrade process will take about 1 to 2 minutes to complete.

12) Once the new firmware has been successfully installed the printer will automatically reboot.

13) Perform a menu reset of the printer settings from the operator panel by accessing the “Menu Reset” option in the “Maintenance Menu” group in “Admin Setup” in the printer’s menu.

[pic]

14) Print the printer menu map from the printer.

15) If the firmware has been successfully installed and the printer has been upgraded the version number on the “CU Version:” line on the first page will now read “12.1”.

16) Now compare the settings from the current printer menu map pages with the previous pages. Verify your current printer menu settings match the settings from the previous configuration pages you printed before the firmware upgrade. Note: Change the settings as needed so they match to avoid any unforeseen issues with the printed output and performance of the printer.

That’s it! You have successfully upgraded your printer and now have full Apple AirPrint™ capability for use with your mobile devices. Since the Apple AirPrint™ feature is enabled by default you’re ready to test it out and start printing from your mobile device. Note: The mobile device you wish to print from must be connected to the same network as your printer to be able to access and print to it. Please see the latest version of the user manual available on the Okidata website for more information regarding setup instructions for using the Apple AirPrint™ network protocol.
