Overview of Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)

A. Variety of names; Cortical Visual Impairment, Cerebral Visual Impairment, Neurological Visual Impairment, Brain Damage Related Vision Loss, Delayed Vision Maturation

B. Common neurological disorders associated with a diagnosis of C/CVI; Asphyxia (HIE), Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH), Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) or Periventricular White Matter Damage, Post Hemorrhagic Ventriculomegaly (or Post Hemorrhagic Hydrocephalus – PHH), Cerebral Vascular Accident, Central nervous system infection, Structural abnormalities, trauma and transient cases

C. The Visual Brain; regions of the brain, visual pathways from the eyes to the visual cortex, the primitive visual brain, processing of an image in the primary visual cortex, ventral and dorsal streams
