Where Is The World’s Population Distributed
Population Chapter 2: Key Issue 1 2010 edition
Where Is the World’s Population Distributed?
Rubenstein, pp. 46-53
1. We can understand how population is distributed by examining two basic properties:
a) b)
2. Define cartogram: (bottom of Figure 2-1 p. 47)
● POPULATION CONCENTRATIONS p. 47
3. The world’s population is highly clustered, or concentrated in certain regions. FOUR major population concentrations are identified in the text. Shade and label the areas of these concentrations on the map. TWO smaller concentrations, or emerging clusters, are also identified. Indicate these on the map as well.
4. For the AP Exam in May, it is imperative that you know what countries make up the four largest population concentrations in the world. The info is found pp. 47-49.
4. 4 regions have some similarities: a) or b)
(p. 47 left side column)
5. East Asia: 4 countries: a) b) c) d)
#1 population: ¼ of the world’s population
6. South Asia: 4 countries: a) b) c) d)
#2 in world population: ¼ of the world’s population
7. Southeast Asia: The Islands are: (some are a part of Indonesia and some belong to other countries).
a) Indonesia (13,677 islands) b) c) d)
e)
** The 3 Asian population concentrations together comprise more than ½ of the world’s total population, but together they live on less than 10$ of the Earth’s land area. #4 in world population
8. Europe: includes European Russia – 1/9 of the world’s people – 48 countries
Highest population concentration in Europe are near the coalfields of:_____________________________,
______________________________________, and ______________________________.
#3 in world population
9. In the boxes below, make note of significant facts, features, countries involved, and characteristics of the four most important population concentrations and two secondary ones.

10. Define ecumene:
11. What would non-ecumene mean?
12. List the four types of lands which are sparsely populated on earth in the table below. For each region, briefly explain the reason which makes it inhospitable for human habitation.

13. Use the info on p. 50 in your textbook to prepare a sketch map which shows non-ecumene and very sparsely inhabited lands. Identify larger areas on the map with terms from the above chart’s left column.
● POPULATION DENSITY p. 50
5. Define each of the following terms on the left side and make some additional notes about the type of density on the right side.
