State of Society Message

To: Chapter Presidents

State Officers

Past State President

State Committee Chairs

From: Sharon Darling, President of Alpha Beta State

A new year has arrived. There are many Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and Alpha Beta State Organization exciting things going on. It is your state president’s responsibility to give you that information.

International Information

Beginning in July, I began to receiving correspondence from International Headquarters. Some of this is hard copies but most of it comes by email. Some of that correspondence is the President to President Newsletter, U.S. Forum Communications, Updates at International, and the International Directory. One of the most important things for me and all members is to check our international website which is . In order to access information, you will need your membership number and the password. Check with your chapter president for that information. The website has much information about our society and many tools that can be used on the state and chapter level. It has a new look!

Is current legislation something you are interested in? The National Legislature Seminar sponsored by The US Forum will be held on March 18-20, 2018 at the Holiday Inn Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. It is the opportunity to join other women who are advocates for education, women, and children. More information can be found on the website.

This summer, 2018, is time for our International Convention. It will be July 16-20 at J.W.Marriott in no other than Austin, Texas our society’s birthplace. I am so excited. This convention is already being designed to empower and inspire us. Two speakers so far are Benjamin Zander who is the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor and Amelia Lopez who is an educational leader and author. This year, there will also motions presented that will need you input. There will be great breakout sessions where you can gain knowledge professionally and personally. What an opportunity to gain a better understanding of our society, to network with sisters across our society, and to visit our International Headquarters. You can begin registering at the hotel beginning January 2. Registration for the convention begins on February 1. Check the website regularly!

For those who love to travel, DKG has an Alaska Glacier Cruise planned for August 29 – September 8, 2018. The ship is Celebrity Solstice. If you would like more information, contact Carolyn Rants (Carolyn@) or call Nicole at 1-800-438-7672.

STATE INFORMATION

Unfortunately, Alpha Beta State continues to lose members. The statistics for this year are:

781 Active and Reserve Members

1 Active Life Member

8 Honorary Members

We need to encourage young educators to consider joining our society. We know this is a trend throughout our society but we in Alpha Beta State must break that trend. We were very fortunate to have Becky Sadowski, second vice president of International, at our society workshop to lead us in ways we can revitalize our state and chapters. We have had chapters dissolved but we have also had chapters to grow. Alpha, Delta, Nu, Pi, and Zeta have increased their membership. You might want to check with them to see what they did.

The Leadership Development Committee is working on planning the Leadership Development Conference to be held May 5, 2018 at the Bowie Comfort Inn and Conference Center. Incoming chapter presidents will receive training. (Chapter Presidents, please inform me who your new president will be by April 1, since they do receive training at this meeting). We are very fortunate to have Nita Scott, the newly appointed Executive Director at International headquarters, to attend. She will be doing some follow-up from our society workshop. We will also have workshops about how our society is changing as more and more women are in control of their finances and how they differ in their view of money and decisions they see as important. Another session to select from will be with Lulu Delacre who is an author and illustrator of Latino Books. Many of her books have the English version as well. She will also be our keynoter at our luncheon. Just to maybe also catch your interest, we do have some sisters who will do a little acting. More information will be our soon!

Please send your chapter newsletter to me (darlingsh.abs@) and to our state newsletter editor, Dr. Minnie Young (drminnieyoung@).

Everyone is doing such marvelous things and we all want to know what they are.

Remember that Alpha Beta State’s goal is Grow, Change, Soar.
