Elementary Chemistry Lab is a concurrent requirement of Elementary Chemistry (Chem 107). It is designed to illustrate chemical principles and teach fundamental techniques.

You must pass the lab portion of the class in order to pass the course.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Chemistry 107 Lab Manual 2006.

Lab Safety Package: Chem 107, by Chem Dept. 2007.

Safety Goggles Scientific calculator Fullerton College Computer Account

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS:

pot holder or small towel, lab apron. Bring your calculator to lab.

GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS:

Be prompt and regular in attendance. Absences and/or tardiness will result in a lower grade. Lab Quizzes are unannounced and are given at the beginning of the lab period (9:30am). If you are late and miss a quiz, you get a zero. If you only have 2 minutes to finish, well, you have 2 minutes…..

Do not expect to get out of lab early each week (although, rarely you will be finished early, depending on your preparedness). The class is scheduled until 12:20pm, and often you will require the entire lab period to complete the experiment.

MAKE UP LABS are discouraged and are possible only for emergencies and require prior arrangement with the instructor. If you must miss a lab, see the instructor ASAP to discuss options. Sometimes it will not be possible to make up a lab due to the schedule. Missed labs will result in a score of zero.

Be prepared for the laboratory experiment. Read the experiment before lab; it will save you time and frustration and you will get a better grade!

Avoid collaboration on laboratory experiments and reports except by instructor assignment. Falsification of data and/or collaboration may result in zeros for all students involved.

Try to master each new technique and principle as it is presented. You will use certain techniques throughout the course and in later Chem courses. Your lab instructor is here to assist you.

LAB REPORTS:

Each lab report will be due at the beginning of the next lab period...at 9:30 am sharp. If you come to lab late, your lab report is also late and will have 5 points deducted.

Each report is worth a total of 20 points.

Each report should include a pre-lab (2 pts), data sheets and calculations, and a post-lab (5 pts).

The pre-lab must be completed before performing the experiment.

Record ALL DATA (not calculations) IN INK. Do not erase. Do not use White Out. If you make a mistake, simply put a line through the entry.

Your lowest lab score will be dropped from the total.

Lab reports handed in up to 1 week late will receive a 5 point deduction. After 1 week, late labs will not be accepted. If you miss a lab, be sure to get the previous weeks lab report to the instructor on or before the due date, otherwise it will be late.

Lab reports will be graded, returned only for your review, and then collected again for credit. You will not get to keep your lab reports; the instructor keeps them.

SAFETY GOGGLES:

Safety goggles may be purchased at the bookstore or elsewhere and must protect the eyes from the top and sides. Eyeglasses, sunglasses and safety shields are not sufficient. You MUST have goggles and WEAR THEM correctly or you will not be allowed to participate in laboratory classes.

Check In and Check Out:

Once you check in to a locker, YOU are responsible for the equipment in that locker. Be sure all items are present at the start, and that they are not chipped or broken. At the end of the semester you will check out of the locker. At that time I will inspect each piece of equipment and you will need to replace anything that is lost or broken.

Lab Grade Analysis

Your lab grade will be calculated by adding grades from your best 12 lab reports and all your quizzes. This lab grade is then normalized to 200 pts toward your lecture grade.

1. Lab Reports

13 labs @ 20 pts each, then drop the lowest score 240 pts

keep track of your scores below:

drop the lowest score and add the rest

| | | | |

|Qu1 |Qu2 |Qu3 |Qu4 |

Your total quiz = (as a % divide by 0.2)

2. Cumulative Lab Quiz

1 cumulative lab quiz given last lab meeting @ 60 pts 60 pts

Your Cumulate Lab Quiz score = (as a % divide by 0.6)

TOTAL Possible points 320 pts

Your grand total = lab reports + lab quizzes + cumulative quiz

________ + ________ + _________ = ___________

(as a % divide the grand total by 3.2)

To normalize your score for lecture:

(your grand total score) x 200

320
