Part I – Cake Day with a partner: _________________________

1. The Cake

a. Bake a 2 layer cake (with different sized layers) from scratch or from a box.

b. Bake it No more than 2 days before it’s due – we want it edible!

c. Icing/frosting on all sides and the top of each layer. Use a thin layer of icing between the 2 cake layers.

d. You have the following choices for your cake shape: circle, rectangle, square, triangle

2. The Silhouette

a. After baking, set both layers of your cake on clean, manila drawing paper.

b. Trace each layer on the manila paper.

c. Label the actual dimensions of each layer in centimeters and write them on the manila paper.

• Make sure that your lines are straight and that your circles are true circles. Use a ruler and/or a compass to create clean lines on your drawings.

d. Create a 3D model of your cake using your manila drawings.

• Make sure the measurements are on the outside of the model.

3. The Sketch

a. Draw a sketch of the top and lateral view of the stacked cake.

b. Label the dimensions on your sketch.

Part II – The Nets and Calculations (no partners for part II)

1. Create the net of your original cake.

a. You will need to create a net on unlined white paper using proper dimensions from part one.

b. Use a centimeter ruler to create your net.

c. Color the net with a highlighter or light colored pencil. Color code your net and create a legend/key for your colors for the net.

2. Construct the net of your cake dilated by a scale factor of ______.

a. Same as above, but use a different color for the dilated net.

3. Complete both sides of the surface area and volume worksheet.

a. Make sure all work is neat and easy to read. Include all appropriate units. Remember you were to take all measurements in centimeters.

b. It is recommended that you use what was learned in chapter 11 to check your work. Comparing the original and dilated surface areas, as well as the original and dilated volumes.
