INTRODUCTION

Jesus was a master of delivery when it came to preaching and teaching. Regardless of His audience, He could explain the most profound truths or He could confound His audiences by literally hiding imminent truth in plain view! Now according to Butler’s Analytical Commentary in Matthew 13, “Eight parables are recorded in the chapter. Only two parts of the chapter are not parables – but one of those parts is related to the parables. The eight parables include two story parables (a narrative illustration used to teach a truth) and six similitude parables (a singular short illustration used to teach a truth).”

We will later determine the parabolic style of teaching gave even the Disciples some difficulty in understanding, but they had the great privilege of receiving the interpretations of these truths that were “hidden in plain view.” What a blessing to have been able to walk, talk and be instructed by Jesus Christ! And you and I have that same blessed privilege for John 16:13 tells us, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”

Now let us begin the lesson for this week entitled: “Three Parables on the Justness of the Kingdom of God.”

Anticipated Power Points:

• The Tale of Two Agriculturists. Matthew 13:24-30

• The Truth of the Kingdom Advertised. Matthew 13:31-32

• The Teachings of the Almighty. Matthew 13:33

LESSON OUTLINE

I. The Tale of Two Agriculturists. Matthew 13:24-30

This parable gives the fact that Jesus warns in the coming days after His departure that there would be counterfeiters (Satan’s crowd) who would work subversively to undermine the Faith, which was once delivered unto the Saints! His parable shares how one agriculturist planted wheat but while he slept, another agriculturist planted ‘tares’ or weeds in his garden by night. The Lord would be one agriculturist and Satan represents the other.

Dr. Warren Wiersbe declares to us who are saved, “We must beware of Satan’s counterfeits. He has counterfeit Christians (II Cor. 11:13-15) who believe a counterfeit Gospel (Gal. 1:6-9). He encourages a counterfeit righteousness (Rom. 10:1-3), and even has a counterfeit Church (Rev. 2:9). At the end of the age, he will produce a counterfeit Christ (II Thess. 2:1-12).”

As Christians, let us remember that Jesus Christ plants the seeds of righteousness, but the other agriculturist Satan plants his seeds in the midst of Christ’s planting to raise counterfeits and cause havoc! “The Devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).”

Jesus the Good Agriculturist knows that time is on His side. Remember II Thessalonians 1:7-9, “And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.” And read Revelation 20:11-15. He has appointed the judgment of the Devil and all of his cohorts.

II. The Truth of the Kingdom Advertised. Matthew 13:31-32

Jesus proclaims that the truth and power of His Kingdom when advertised has the influence of a tiny grain of mustard seed. This parable is shared in three of the four gospel accounts (Matt. 13:31-32; Mk. 4:30-32; and Luke 13:18-19).

The truth of God’s Kingdom does not have to be forced or shouted upon people. It may be as small as a mustard seed, one of the smallest herb seeds of Palestine. But when it reaches its potential, it grows into a 12-15 ft. plant that can give refuge even to some birds.

“The Kingdom of God can flourish among other nations of the earth. The Kingdom of God does not have border control, because it is intended to grow within existing Kingdoms” (Standard Lesson Study Bible). Beloved, the truth of the message of God’s Kingdom (God’s Rule), is meant to be shared worldwide (Matt. 28:18-20)! Are we spreading the message influencing our world like the mustard seed?

III. The Teachings of the Almighty. Matthew 13:33

Now the final parable this week to some is difficult. Why? Because it uses the word leaven, which is not accepted as good among the Israelites. It is most times a type of evil, worldliness, etc. But it seems in this area to show that the influence of the teachings of the Almighty are as influential in a positive way as yeast or leaven’s influence on a batch of dough. Read the short parable and focus on “The Kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven…” It is not leaven, but like unto. Why? Because as any baker knows who wants to bake a loaf of bread, to put leaven or yeast into the dough and let it sit hidden for a time. Then later the results of the hidden leaven causes the dough to expand, which gives the bread more substance or volume. God’s Kingdom message when shared with others will in time influence the world, transcending borders and doing what Jesus commanded in the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20). Beloved, thank God that Jesus’ Kingdom is superior to all others. Will you help spread its message while you have a chance?

CLOSING

Kurt Kaiser wrote the words to this song: “It only takes a spark to get a fire going, And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing; That’s how it is with God’s love; Once you’ve experienced it, you spread His love to everyone; You want to pass it on.”
