Glossary for Fully Alive 1(Lessons 1-8)Annunciation: The name given to the story in St Luke’s Gospel that tells of how God, through the angel Gabriel, invited Mary to be the mother of Jesus, and of how Mary responded to that invitation by saying ‘Yes’ to God.Apostle: The name given to each of the twelve men whom Jesus chose to preach the Gospel and lead the early Church.Bible: The sacred text for all Christians. Christians believe that the Bible is the Word of God and that its human authors were inspired by the Holy Spirit. It contains a collection of books, arranged in two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Bible is also known as Sacred Scripture. See also New Testament; Old Testament.Chosen People: Name given to the Israelites, or ancient Hebrew people, whom God, working through Moses, freed from slavery in Egypt and led to the Promised Land.Christian(s): Name by which followers of Jesus are known. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, they wrote what God wanted people to know about himself, about themselves and about the world around them. Israelites: Name given to the Jewish people of ancient Israel, descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They are also called Hebrews.New Testament: The second part of the Bible, which is also known as the Christian Scriptures. The New Testament has twenty-seven books. They tell us the story of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.Old Testament: The first part of the Bible, which is also known as the Hebrew Scriptures. This part of the Bible has forty-six books which tell us about God and the people of Ancient Israel before the time of Jesus.Prophet: A messenger from God who communicates what God wants people to know about himself, about human beings and their relationship with God, and about the role of human beings in God’s plan for the world and its people.Religious Education: Education about faith and about the religious beliefs that people hold, and where these beliefs originated. Such education aims not alone to provide us with information on religious matters, but it also challenges us to think and act justly and to identify the values and attitudes that influence our behaviour and the behaviour of others. Revelation: The word that is used to describe how God reveals to human beings what he is like and what he desires for them.
