Note: For files on topics unrelated to place names (such as labor issues, livestock transportation, Jim Crow, etc.), researchers should request of HMRC a copy of its “Container List” for this collection, an

inventory of 400+ boxes. However, there is no organization to that list, making it quite laborious for quick research by place name, and so this place name index was made from the HMRC Container List. This index

covers GC&SF and P&SF (Panhandle Division) locations. These records narrowly escaped destruction. Archivist Louis Marchiafava recounted that the Houston Public Library received a call in the early 1970s that they

had been dumped on the floor of the old Legal Department in the Galveston General Office building, because somebody wanted the metal filing cabinets but not the files. This accounts for the disarray in the

collection as now preserved; large coal shovels were used to scoop the files off of the floor and in the process there was considerable disorder introduced. However, even in disarray these records provide a

remarkably clear archival window on internal corporate affairs. Their importance is considered to be so great that several thousand dollars have been spent to copy the files thought to be most significant, in case

there should be destruction by fire or flood at Houston.
