CHAPTER 1

1. Think about the “rules” regarding jewelry, makeup, perfume, nail polish, hygiene, and clothing as discussed in the introductory paragraph and in your textbook, and explore the reasons for those rules as they apply to safety and health. These safety and health reasons can be for us, as workers, our coworkers and employers, and our patients, as well as the general public. Discuss with several other classmates how important you think it is to honor these rules, why they are or are not important, and which medical assistants might not need to adhere to these rules.

2. Your family has given you a student membership to your professional organization. How can this benefit you as a student?

3. You cannot attend chapter meetings on a regular basis. How might you maintain your CMA credential?

4. Your friend asks you about the scope of practice of medical assistants. How would you explain this to him or her?

Log on to the Web sites for the AAMA and the AMT to get information about the requirements to become a CMA through AAMA or RMA through AMT.

5. Below the name of each organization, write five specifics about the certification examination.

8. List five questions that could be used on a questionnaire to gather data about medical practices. For example, “Which services does your practice provide on-site to patients?” and “Which kinds of insurance are accepted by your practice?” Do not use these example questions unless you put them into your own words.

9. Go to the National Library of Medicine Web site on the Internet and do a search for the following: “So, what’s new in the past?” Spend some time looking at the photos and reading the interesting subtitles. Under the section of “History as: Weapon,” find the photo and accompanying information about Samuel Thomson. He was the founder of one of the earliest and most vigorous of the nineteenth-century medical sects, the Thomsonians. What did the Thomsonians believe in? Were their beliefs widely accepted or scorned? Search for other Web sites about Samual Thomson and his followers. Is there any formal following today of his teachings?

10. Research the religion of Christian Scientists. What is their primary belief toward health and healing? How would Christian Scientists’ beliefs affect the treatment they would accept/receive in today’s medical arena?

11. Choose another religion and search for its main doctrines about health and healing. How would those beliefs affect the treatments they would accept/receive in today's medical arena?

12. Discuss these findings with a small group of classmates. Do all of you agree with the various views? Do you strongly disagree? How will this knowledge affect how you treat your patients who believe in and practice those religions?
