3556020955PARROT PRESSMetro Parrot Head Newsletter April 2009NY, NJ, CT Vol. 17 No. 4TALES FROM MY BANK OF BAD HABITSMargaritaville Resort/CasinoComing to Long Island!!Calverton, NY - Representatives of the Shinnecock Nation, the Suffolk County Legislature and singer Jimmy Buffett gathered in front of “Plant Six” at the former Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant in Calverton to announce the construction of new casino at the facility that where, at one time, the final assembly of F-14 Tomcats took place. After an over thirty year struggle to receive federal recognition ended last month, the Shinnecocks wasted little time in forming a partnership with Jimmy Buffett to bring a Margaritaville Resort/Casino to this bucolic hamlet in eastern Long Island. The comments from both the politicians and the Shinnecocks sounded much like voices of adults in those old Charlie Brown TV specials… wha-wha-wha-whaaaaaaaaa. This reporter believes that our readers would be much more interested in hearing what Mr. Buffett had to say. “When the Shinnecocks approached me and pitched the idea for a casino at the former Grumman plant I didn’t hesitate at all” said Buffett a part time resident of Sag Harbor. “To me, it seemed the perfect fit. I’ve been singing about casinos “Those crazy Navy Flyers” almost at long as the Shinnecocks have been seeking recognition of their nation”. “My favorite seaplane, the Hemisphere Dancer, is a Grumman Albatross”, he went on to say, “And, I spent many hours at the Grumman Museum in Bethpage doing research for my book “Where is Joe Merchant?”“There’s a certain romance about being a Naval Aviator, maybe I should have been a Naval Academy Grad, like my parents wanted. But I did come pretty close once. Back in 1986, I talked the Navy into letting me fly one of their jets. Before they let me though, I had to pass Naval Aviation Survival School. I’m proud to say that I did and that the training was helpful a few years later when I hit a swell while taking off in Nantucket with my Grumman Widgeon. As the plane was sinking I remember the saying “Bubbles up” and swam to the surface. “I like to make all my restaurants a little different and will do the same with this casino. Given the unique history of this site, the casino will be themed after my second love, flying. I’ll even be bringing the Albatross back north from Orlando to make it the centerpiece. You know, I always felt a little bad about turning that plane into a tiki bar. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 April2009Hau`oli la hanau! After all, I’m building a casino in Atlantic City and I just opened a Margaritaville Cafe at Mohegan Sun. I wanted to do a little something here on the Island I call home for a good part of the year.” “Imagine, Long Island’s first casino will be right next to a 35 story indoor ski resort. Unreal”, he said, shaking his head and laughing. Construction on the casino is slated to start in 2010 with the casino opening in 2012.Ed. Note: Can’t wait to get your Margaritaville fix? You’re in luck. Jimmy is planning on opening the first ever Margaritaville Outlet Store at the Tanger Outlet Center in nearby Riverhead. That store is scheduled to open later this year. Great job Metros!Long Island Metro's #1 at NEPHC 2009?? ? This March, fellow Metros Eric & Lorraine Rosen entered the N.E.P.H.C. Duval Crawl contest held in the Marriott Hotel. On Saturday March 7th a 2 hour "hall crawl "commenced. Lorraine and Eric won and were awarded a certificate later that?evening stating the their "Greeen Parrot" was hands down the most voted for "establishment".??? ? Eric and Lorraine were among 17 "Bars" representing the bars of Key West's Duval Street. The Green Parrot in Portland Maine was decorated to perfection including a hand made replica sign .They welcomed more than 200 people into their room that day. Everyone was offered a Margarita or a Rum & Coke and many?delicious?snacks were set out. Believe me, there was " No?Sniveling” there . The Green Parrot room was packed to capacity most of the time and many pictures and laughs were had. We heard it said the the Green Parrot in Key West doesn't like ParrotHeads, well the opposite was the case in the Green Parrot in Maine . The Rosens' welcomed all Parrothead patrons and the love was returned when the votes were counted .?? ? ?Our own First Lady, Carol stayed so long chatting that her crawl mates went missing. It was the place to be ! Along with the Rosen's Green Parrot others that were also represented were Hog's Breath Saloon ,Schooner Wharf ,Capt. Tony's, Lazy Gecko, Smallest Bar x 2, Fat Tuesday's x 2, El Siboney, La Te Da, Naked Lunch, Hooters, Southernmost Tiki Bar and of course the Garden of Eden.Be sure to look for the photos on the Metro PH Club site to see all the fun we had?On behalf of our fellow Long Island Metro's Lorraine and Eric,Ray and Sue Leudesdorff?Friday the 13th The second one in as many months, and we can look forward to another one in November! The day started off as usual. Awake at 4:30 am, feed the cats, take the dog for a quick run. Jump in the shower, get ready for work. Taking my wedding ring off to put moisturizer on my hands, I place it on the bed side table. Champ (one of my four cats)? begins playing with the ring, knocking it off the table and chasing it around on the hardwood floor... I did my best to watch and listen to the whereabouts of cat and ring, but no luck. The ring is lost. ?Friday 13th. Off to work I go, its pay day, and the weekend is a short 8 hours away. Work is work, but the day is going along at a quick pace, and before I know it Friday 13th will be over. Home I go?to take the dog for another run, but this time his girlfriend Nike comes with us. She is a pit bull who lives across the street. We run, we come home, Nike gets away from me and attacks my cat peyton.? Hysterically, off to the vet I go... how could this have happened? Will my cat be okay? Friday?the 13th.The cat has a bruised bladder and is in shock, but he is not dead.?A shot in the butt, an x-ray and $483.00 later, we leave the vets office. Friday the 13th.Is it 5?O' clock somewhere yet??? My daughter calls, is on her way over, she has news to tell us. Will this day ever end? Congratulate me Erin says. I got accepted to Harvard for my second masters! Cognitive neuroscience she tells us... proud as we are, and happy as can be for her, retirement has now been pushed back a year or ten. Friday the 13th. ?If we couldn't laugh, we'd all go insaneJohn and Christine BaldwinTALES FROM MY BANK OF BAD HABITSWow, great news about the Margaritaville Resort and Casino coming to Calverton, Long Island. I remember back to the November 2008 newsletter, when I wrote about the opening of the Mohegan Sun Margaritaville. I closed the article by saying to Jimmy, “now how about one for New York City, or another island, Long Island”. He does get a copy of our newsletter, do you think……..? Not !!!!!!!!! I think we all know who to credit for this month’s cover story. Thanks to our April 1st. mystery writer for another job well done. Back to the real world. While trying to lighten Kerry-Anne’s workload on both the Banana Wind and the newsletter, I’ve set up a Yahoo Group for Metro. The Banana Wind will be eliminated in the near future and we’ve started putting the email addresses from the Banana Wind on it, so if you receive some weird email from a MetroPHC Yahoo Group posting, that means you are up and running. Please send me your email address if you are not receiving the Banana Wind presently. I’ll have more details for you in the May newsletter, as far as how to access the group and the type of content that is appropriate. For the time being the Banana Winds will keep blowing your way. In the future, we will also be attaching the monthly newsletter to a yahoo group posting. It will be in a PDF file that you can just print yourself and also save on your computer. Most clubs are sending their newsletters this way. The end result is we can save Kerry-Anne some extra time that will allow her to have 8 or 9 more margaritas at the bar every week and we will save on postage and printing, not to mention a few trees. If anyone doesn’t have email or a computer we will still send yours to you in the mail. Just let us know, send me an email, oh, now that won’t work will it? Send a smoke signal, put a note in a bottle or just ask another member to send me an email for you. Many thanks to Ellen Hill, our co-area coordinator in New Jersey, who has decided to step down. Don’t fear, Jim Hill will still be with us. Metro truly appreciates all Ellen has done to maintain our presence in New Jersey for so many years. We are in the process of finding a replacement, so New Jersey members beware, you can be our next co-area coordinator. Lastly, thanks for the input on the Frosted Party. Keep your ideas coming. I promise that the 2010 Frosted will be an event you will not want to miss.Your president,DaveEditor’s Correction to Dave: There is no need to go to the bar every week. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length. Since this is a PHIP?sponsored charity,?it would be nice to have a Parrot Head team at our relay!? An ideal team consists of 10-15 members, and we look for a minimum fundraising effort of $100 per member.? The team captain would attend the team captain meetings at the Yorktown Community Center.?Your team can sign up online, begin fund raising online and attend the next meetings scheduled for 4/14, 5/12 and 6/10 at 7pm.??Please?call Jane?McCarthy?with any questions on 914-329-3661 or via email: janemc02@. or Phlocking PhunNYCMetro North Long IslandBrother Jimmy’s BBQ8th Ave & 31st St.2nd Friday of each month at5:30 PMEast Side Café232 East Avenue Norwalk, CT2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM.The Vanderbilt Wharf445 Vanderbilt Boulevard Oakdale, NY 11769April 18thEd Travers Live METRO PARROT HEAD FAMILY PICNIC Fresh Pond Park, in Amagansett ?Saturday, July 25th.The Metro Parrot Head DirectoryPresident:David Pohorylo35 Boot Shop LaneMonroe, CT 06468(203)261-1381dpohorylo@?Executive Vice President:Lorraine Bosshard6 Mountainview CourtFort Salonga, NY 11768(631) 757-4043Treasurer:Peter Bosshard6 Mountainview CourtFort Salonga, NY 11768(631) 757-4043Secretary:Marianne Straaik25 Rhode Island AveMassapequa, NY 11758(516)795-4126Parrot Press/Banana Wind EditorKerry-Anne WillettPO Box 1134Miller Place, NY 11764 buffettfans@Ticket LiaisonTom Dalton(631)979-8337ragtoptom@LI CoordinatorMatt Smith(631)209-9691liparrothead@NJ CoordinatorJim Hill(973)994-2575Upstate & Ct CoordinatorsCarol Pohorylo(203)261-1381carpoh@?.Eastern LIJoe Lombardi(631)324-9354NYC CoordinatorTerri Amundsen(718)956-5658Western CoordinatorsLinda Peter/Larry DeGennarofunnfins@ldgenn93@Metro Parrot Head ClubPO Box 1134Miller Place, NY 11764The METRO Parrot Head Club is a not-for-profit organization whose purposes are to assist community and environmental concerns and to provide a variety of social activities for people with similar tastes & interests.
