COURSE DESCRIPTION

PATRICIA WEST-LOW, PT,

MA, DPT, PCS has been a physical

therapist for over 25 years. She earned a Bachelor's in Physical Therapy from The University of Scranton, an Advanced Master's Degree from New York University, and a Doctoral Degree from Seton Hall University. She is a Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist.

Breathing mechanics and postural control are linked! Using Mary Massery's novel research and the "Soda-Pop Can" postural control model, the instructor will push this connection further, demonstrating the link between glottal control, breathing and upright postural stability. Her focus will be on applying these concepts from walking to talking in the school-based therapy environment for PT, OT, and SLP.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:

Trish has completed a 2-year apprenticeship with Dr. Mary Massery, PT, DPT, DSc, becoming Dr. Massery's second certified faculty member. Trish receives a speaking fee for her presentation. She has no relevant nonfinancial relationships to disclose.

Dates & Locations >

1. Present a model of postural control (Soda Pop Can Model) that links breathing, talking, and motor performance. 2. Using Massery's research, demonstrate the relationship between the top of the trunk (glottal control), to the middle of the trunk (diaphragm), and to the bottom of the trunk (pelvic floor), in terms of pressure supported postural control and the far-reaching consequences on vocal control, respiration, balance, limb force production, continence, and constipation. 3. Describe the multiple, simultaneous roles of the diaphragm as related to breathing, talking, postural control, gastroesophageal reflux, constipation and venous return. 4. Use voicing to optimize dynamic postural stability (and vice versa), such as stand-to-sit, reaching tasks, toilet transfers, and other typical school day motor activities. 5. Suggest additional PT, OT, and ST interventions to optimize postural control for children receiving therapy services in a school environment.
