GOALS FOR THIS CLASS:

• To develop proficiency in speaking, writing, reading, and aural interpretation of the Spanish language.

• To gain cultural understandings of the Spanish-speaking world.

• To develop language skills and experience that will aid in AP Spanish.

• To develop collaborative and cooperative skills.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

• Why should people learn another language?

• How will learning another language enhance my life?

• What are “language patterns,” and how can they help me learn and use a new language?

• How do I communicate without knowing how to say every word in a language?

CLASS MATERIALS:

You will need to bring the following to class everyday:

▪ Your iPad and iPad charger

▪ Stylus/keyboard

▪ A folder

▪ Your tarjeta de inglés.

▪ A good attitude!

IPAD USE:

• We will be utilizing iPads for instruction and learning. There will be times when it will be asked that you use your iPad to complete an activity and there will also be times when you will be asked to not have your iPad out or in use. Please adhere to these times for use.

• Your iPad is to be used during class to work on activities only related to the course.

• Please turn off any “push notifications” unless otherwise instructed.

• Proper use of your iPad will be reflected in your class participation grades.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:

• AT THE START OF CLASS:

o Do arrive on time. Tardies will result in dean referrals. Please refer to Stevenson’s tardy policy in the student handbook.

o Do have last night’s homework ready to be checked in

o Do go to HAIKU and download the day’s DIARIO (warm-up) and begin working on it.

• DURING CLASS:

o Don’t work on things that you are not being asked to work on (i.e. homework from this class or any other class).

o Don’t bring any food or drink aside from water into the classroom.

o Don’t have your cell phone on or visible from the moment you walk into the classroom until the moment you leave. Any incidents of cell phone use during class will result in a referral to the dean.

o Do pay attention during class and participate in the activities that are going on in class.

o Do show respect to your teacher and classmates. Everyone deserves to learn (and teach) in a positive and respectful environment! Any failure to abide by this rule will result in immediate consequences.

o Do use the bathroom or go to your locker before or after class. In situations when you are unable to do this, you may use one of your bathroom/hall passes (2/semester).

o Do come to class with a good attitude, put forth as much effort as possible, and enjoy learning!

• PARTICIPATION:

o Do participate often and appropriately during class.

o Do speak in Spanish. It is the expectation that you are speaking in Spanish with your teacher and classmates from the moment you walk into the classroom until the moment you leave. You will be assessed on your use of Spanish during class.

• ABSENCES

o Do check the makeup folder for handouts when you return to class after an absence.

o Do communicate with your group members to verify homework that was assigned and copy any notes that were taken.

o Do immediately sign up with the testing center (online or in room 1200) for any missed assessments. Listening portions are administered in the learning center by the paraprofessional – no appointment necessary.

o Do make up your tests/quizzes in accordance with the x+1 policy. Any work that is not made up in that time may result in a zero.

• GRADES

o Do complete your homework completely and carefully.

o Do complete your homework on time. Partial credit can be received for assignments if shown to the teacher on the next day.

o Do prepare for your assessments and write down the dates for upcoming tests and performance assessments.

▪ Assessments will include frequent learning checks, exams, and performance based assessments (improvisations, oral presentations, written compositions).

▪ Grades are weighted in the following categories:

o Homework: 15%

o Participation: 10%

o Assessments (quizzes/tests): 75%

o Don’t rely on extra credit opportunities, as there are no opportunities for extra credit in this course.

• ACADEMIC HONESTY:

o Don’t engage in academically dishonest behaviors such as cheating, copying, or using online translators. These actions will result in an automatic zero for that assignment or quiz/test as well as a phone call home. Use of online translators is also not allowed when completing written assignments and essays – this will similarly result in a zero for the assignment. (Refer to the Departmental policy handout)

***FINAL DO’S AND DON’TS***

o Do get help when you feel that you need it. Visit the LC or make an appointment with Mrs. McCullough for extra help.

o Don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed when speaking Spanish. We are all learning together!

o Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. This is all a part of the learning process!

o Do enjoy and appreciate learning Spanish! Learning a foreign language can open doors that you might not have ever known existed!
