Who Am I? Book

First Quarter Project: 6th Grade

Advanced Content Language Arts

Due: Wednesday, September 30

During the next few weeks, you will be making a book which reflects you. Be thinking of what you would want to do to make the book completely yours. Think about the shape it will be. What colors, what symbols of yours might you put in the book and how will you decorate the book? Make it neat, expressive, and something you will be proud of.

Your “Who Am I” books will be returned to you, so please feel free to include family pictures. Be sure that your book is attractively bound (not paper-clipped or stapled), typed or written in dark blue or black ink, and that your illustrations are neatly colored.

Each assignment should be done on a separate sheet of paper, front side only. Title each assignment. For example, if you are working on the autobiography section, and you choose to write about a time of your greatest sadness, you would create a title for that particular item that you are writing about. Your responses should be written in paragraph form!

The “Who Am I” books are due upon arrival to class. That means that your project is ready to turn in when you come to class. You will not have time to put it together the day it is due; it should be completely finished on the due date.

You have three levels of work to choose from: A, B, or C. You will choose which grade you wish to earn, and then complete those assignments for your “Who Am I” book.

“A” grade: You must include these items to make an “A”. If your work is excellent, fabulous, and marvelous, you could make a 100! All assignments must be fully completed, neat, and attractive to make an “A”.

The “Who Am I” book is a long-term project. Long-term projects are expected to be turned in on the due date. Because of the nature of a long-term assignment, you need to organize your time effectively. While some class time will be allotted, much of this project will be completed at home. Please do not think that you will have enough time in class to complete this project!

Projects are due Wednesday, September 30. Being absent does not excuse you from turning in your project. If you think you might be absent, then turn it in early. If you do not have your project to turn in on the assigned due date, Miss Rothschild will be contacting a parent. Please note, running out of printer ink does not excuse you from turning your project in on time. Projects will only be accepted one day late, and only with parental contact. Points will be deducted for any project that is turned in late.

Introduction

The “Who Am I” book is about you- what you are like, your interests and dislikes, your thoughts and opinions. This is a tool to learn more about yourself through reflection and introspection. Once you have completed all the tasks for the book, you are to write the introduction. This should be the last task that you complete.

Your introduction should be written in paragraph form. It should be a minimum of three well-developed, well-elaborated paragraphs. In your introduction, you need to explain your process of completing your tasks. By this, I mean you need to explain your thought processes, not the physical aspect of compiling your book. For example, which tasks interested you the most? Why? Why did you choose some options rather than others? Which tasks did not hold your attention? Those are a few questions to start you thinking process. Finally, you need to share what you learned about yourself while you were working on the project. It is not okay to say that you did not learn anything about yourself- this is a discovery exercise as much as an exercise in written expression.

Remember, your introduction is an essay. Thus, you’ll have an introduction and a conclusion. You may not write anything along the lines of:

This is my project…

My name is… and I am going to tell you about…

In conclusion…

That is the end of my introduction…

I hope you have enjoyed reading…

These are just examples of what NOT to write. In middle school writing, we do not use this type of phrasing.

You will use these questions as a guide to writing a poem about yourself. I have included an example poem to show you how it might look when it is finished.

Each response is to be a minimum of two paragraphs. The paragraphs should be well-developed and well-elaborated. This means that you give details and explanation to fully explain each autobiographical episode. Remember, you only need to complete enough responses to satisfy the grade level you have chosen. So, if you have chosen to contract for an “A” grade, you will respond to ten of the questions/statements, and you will have a minimum of twenty paragraphs.

1. Tell/ explain about a turning point in your life.

2. Describe a time of your greatest sadness.

3. Tell about the person who has had the most tremendous impact on your life thus far.

4. Tell some things that you would put in your life to make you happy.

5. Tell about a situation in which you felt embarrassed.

6. Tell about some of the beautiful things your family does together.

7. Describe how your life might change it there were no TV.

8. Tell about a teacher (in school or out of school) who really helped you.

9. Which of your courses in school do you enjoy the most and why?

10. Make a list of the best friends you have had throughout your life. Write a little about how you met, what you did together and why you liked each other, and why you may have drifted apart. Who is or are your best friends now?

More Autobiographical Options for A’s and B’s

11. For each of the following, tell something about where you learned it and from whom:

a. Who taught you how to dance? When? Where?

b. Think of something you know how to do and explain where you learned it and from whom. Why did you choose this task?

c. Where did you learn manners? What manners do you consider most important? Why?

12. Recall any serious accidents or illnesses that you have had. Write a brief explanation of what happened and how you feel about it now. What feelings do you remember having at the time?

13. Recall any animals that you have had for pets. Explain what made your pet special to you. Did your pet have any quirky habits or unique qualities? Was it able to perform any special tricks? How did you teach your pet those tricks?

14. What songs have been your favorites during your life? Why? Do you associate them with special events? Share those memories.

15. Describe several items of clothing which were your favorites at one time or another. Why were those clothing items your favorite? When you wore them, how did it make you feel?

16. Describe the way you look, what you like, and what you would like to change (if anything). Include your opinion of what makes something/someone good-looking.

17. Answer briefly all of the following (counts as two responses; should be four paragraphs long):

a. What would you like to have in your lifetime?

b. What do you wish would happen?

c. What, in your life, is too complicated?

d. What wears you out (mentally or physically)?

For this section, you will describe and define five qualities that you feel are admirable. Each quality must be written in complete sentences with an explanation that states why this quality is a dominant choice. You will create an essay based on the five qualities and explanation.

Here are some examples of qualities you might consider. Of course, you are not limited to these examples; you may develop your own ideas!

• Being a caring son, brother, daughter, or sister

• Helping a family member, babysitting, or helping with grandparents

• Doing chores without being reminded

• Being respectful to parents and other family members

• Making the right decisions for self-improvement

• Doing well in extra-curricular activities

• Doing well academically

• Being artistic

• Being involved with visual and performing arts

Example Essay: Please be aware that there is definite room for additional details and elaboration in this essay! (This is a student-example of the essay. Please note that the introduction and conclusion need extensive revision and improvement.)

Five Most Outstanding Qualities

My five most outstanding qualities are these: being responsible, being athletic, being trustworthy, being a good friend, and being unselfish.

First of all, I am responsible. I am responsible when I tell my mom that I’m going somewhere because I get home at the time I say I will. I am also responsible by doing what my parents tell me. I do everything I have planned, and I don’t skip anything.

Secondly, I am athletic. I have participated on ten soccer teams. I show skill in dribbling, scoring, defense, speed, and passing. I have also participated on one swim team. I show skill in speed, freestyle, diving, and backstroke.

Third, I am trustworthy. I am trustworthy by keeping secrets that my friends tell me. I am also trustworthy by doing anything my parents ask me to do.

Next, I am a good friend. I show I am a good friend by helping my friends in their troubles. I also show that I am a good friend by helping my friends stand up to their fears. I help my friends with anything.

Last, I am unselfish. I buy things for my friends and family. I give stuffed animals to my mother to give to kids that go to my mom’s hospital. I am unselfish by caring what others want and helping them get it. On Wednesdays, in the morning, I have tow kindergartners that I help with letters and sounds. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I do inventory at my family’s store. I encourage and help my brother in soccer, the sport he loves.

Those are my outstanding qualities.

So, You Think You Know Me?

Please answer with complete sentences.

4. What would you do if you had one year to live and were guaranteed success in whatever you attempted? Why?

6. What is the most important personal belief that you live by? Explain why you have chosen this belief.

7. What one thing would you want to accomplish by the time you are 65? Why did you choose this?

8. What is something you are striving to become or to be? How did you become interested in this?

The options questions must be answered in paragraph format (each option response should be a minimum of two paragraphs). Answer all parts of the question to receive full credit. Your responses should be well-elaborated and give details to fully explain your ideas.

1. If you could ask your parents any questions for an hour and know they would tell you the absolute truth, what sorts of things would you ask? Pretend they would answer everything but afterward would forget they had even talked to you. Pretend you are the parent. How would you answer the questions?

2. If drinking a magic potion would make you never again feel sad- no matter what happened- would you drink it? Why or why not? Make sure you fully explain your position and give reasons with explanation.

3. If you knew that by never again eating junk foods or candy, you would live until age 85 instead of 75, would you give them up? Why or why not?

4. Would you rather have no rules at all or live with the rules you have now? Why? If there weren’t any rules, what would you do differently? Why? What rules do you most dislike, but are secretly glad that you have? Why?

5. Would you rather receive a gift you really wanted, or give your mother a gift she would absolutely treasure? Why? What influenced your decision?

6. If you had a lot of money and could use it in any way you wanted, what would you do with it? Why? In what ways do you think your life would be different?

My Favorite Poems

For this section, you are to choose your three (or two or one) favorite poems. You need to include the entire poem in your book. Your favorite poems may be by the same author, such as Shel Silverstein or Langston Hughes or Nikki Giovanni. Please include the title and author of the poem.

Under each poem, write a paragraph (minimum of six well-written sentences) about why you like this poem? Is it the rhyming pattern? Is it the subject? Is it because it’s silly or sad? Make sure you give specific reasons why you’ve chosen this particular poem and give examples to support your reasons.

My Favorite Songs

For this section, you are to choose your three (or two or one) favorite song. You need to include the song lyrics. Please make sure that the songs are appropriate for school.

Each song should have a well-developed paragraph explaining the following points:

• the genre of music the song is

• why it’s your favorite song

• how it makes you feel

• when you like to listen to it

For this poem, you are to write three or more stanzas that would sum up what the world would be like if you were in charge. Your poem must be at least twelve lines long. Incorporate humor and creativity into your poem; make it fun! Remember to make sure that each line of your poem begins with a capital letter. Periods or other punctuation marks are required at the end of each stanza. Sample stanzas are provided below.

Personal Favorites

You are going to make a collage of your favorite things. This should be done on a piece of construction paper, using pictures cut out from the newspaper and/or magazines. The pictures should cover the entire page, so no background color shows. Then, on a separate piece of paper, you are going to write several paragraphs about your collage. You will want to describe, in words, your favorite things. Make sure that you have an introduction and a conclusion to your essay.
