Rob Harrell

GENRE: Realistic Fiction, Hybrid Format

BOOK SUMMARY Twelve year old Ross has a rare form of eye cancer. He must undergo radiation treatments, administer eye goop applications, and sport a hideous hat all while he is trying to live the typical life of a seventh grade student. Ross is understandably angry about his unrelenting illness, ridiculous middle school bullying, and his dissipating friendships. Though faced with challenges, Ross is able to somehow make it through as he explores music, creates Batpig comics, and smashes a thing or two. Author Rob Harrell based Ross's struggle with cancer on his own personal experience of having the same rare eye cancer as an adult. In addition, Harrell's comic panels are a fantastic addition to the story.

BOOK TALK Not many middle-schoolers want to stand out, right? Meet Ross, a seventh grader with one good eye, a weird hat, and, thankfully, a decent sense of humor. The author/illustrator's comic book sketches add a whole new dimension to Ross's bout with eye cancer! This book will make you laugh, and it just might make you cry.
