Recipients may also stay through July 13 to attend either the International Research Committee on Disasters or the Natural Hazard Mitigation Association add-on events for researchers and practitioners, respectively. Scholarships can cover part or all of transportation, meals, and registration costs. The Mary Fran Myers Scholarship is awarded annually to at least one potential Workshop participant. Recipients are recognized at the Workshop and may be asked to serve as panelists, where they can highlight their research or practical experiences with hazards and disasters. As the longtime co-director of the Natural Hazards Center, Myers recognized that many of the people and organizations that could benefit from and contribute to the Workshop—including local practitioners, students, and international professionals—were among those least likely to afford it. The scholarship was established in 2003 to fulfill Myers’ request that qualified and talented individuals receive support to attend.Hazards practitioners, students, and researchers with a strong commitment to disaster management and mitigation and who reside outside North America or the Caribbean are eligible to enter. Eligibility is based on current place of residence, not citizenship. Applicants from North America and the Caribbean will be eligible for the scholarship in 2012. Preference is given to those who can demonstrate financial need. For more information on past scholarship winners and how to apply, visit the Mary Fran Myers Scholarship page at the Natural Hazards Center Web site. It has been a busy few weeks preparing the final planning steps for the completion of the California Emergency Management and Homeland Security Education and Training Strategic Initiative. Part 1 Strategic Initiative information was developed and presented at the EM-HS Summit in October and related to programmatic “next steps and recommendations” in the design and development of EM-HS education and training programs at all levels of education (K-12, Training, Associates, Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D.) The preliminary draft of this report will be available to the CEMHS Planning Committee on 2.15.11 and available for public distribution shortly thereafter. Beginning next week, (and after some time well deserved time off!) the CEMHS Planning Committee and Workgroups will begin the completion of Phase II Strategic Initiative development. Specifically, “putting the nuts and bolts” of EM-HS programs and curriculum together. We will be combining the foundational goals of these programs with model programmatic curriculum, and “best practices” into recommendations for academic discipline development with linked external funding support mechanisms. Much of the hard work has already been done and now it is time to finish up the Strategic Initiative Final Report. This objective will be accomplished in a series of teleconferences (once a month beginning in March), committee workgroup meetings for each level of education (K-12, Associates, Training, Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D.), and follow-up Meeting in Sacramento, Ca in June, 2011. As this is quite a bit of coordination at all 6 levels of education across emergency management and homeland security education and training, it has taken quite a bit of time to organize and arrange. Will provide additional details next week—Have a great weekend!Best regards, KeithKeith Clement, Ph.D. Chair, University Undergraduate Curriculum SubcommitteeDirector, HS Scientific Leadership Award Program Coordinator, Department Internships Planning Director, CSU Council for Emergency Management and Homeland Security (CEMHS) ?calstate.edu/cemhs California State University, FresnoDepartment of Criminology 2576 East San Ramon Ave M/S ST104 Fresno, CA 93740-8039 Florida Governor’s Hurricane Conference Student ScholarshipsCenter for Disaster Risk PolicyDeadline: February 15, 2011The Florida State University Center for Disaster Risk Policy is accepting scholarship applications from students wishing to attend the 25th Annual Governor’s Hurricane Conference, to be held May 12-20 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
