Memoirs have been around since political figures and people in the military started recording moments in their lives. The importance of a memoir, unlike an autobiography, is it is written to be read by someone other than the author. The author of a memoir will pick a certain event in their life and write about it, usually having some sort of moral resolution. The reader or audience will read the memoir and be able to relate to the author, or simply get to know them on another level. In America today, things are constantly changing such as our environment, politics, the economy, and the American life as a whole. Thus, more and more people are creating memoirs about their journey through life. Many celebrities or famous politicians write memoirs in order for fans or supporters to get to know them on a deeper level. These memoirs are usually put into larger works but the smaller events in the book are examples of memoirs. An audience or reader will read the memoir simply for entertainment or to get to know the author better. Sometimes a memoir will be about a simple event in someone’s life, but the end will have a valuable meaning that many readers can learn from. A lesson at the end of a memoir is typical as the author either learns something about themselves, or wants the reader to take something away. Memoirs can be short or long, but most of them only focus on one event in the persons life. This way, the author can focus solely on this event and go into deeper detail.Anyone willing to write a memoir usually wants to get their life down on paper for someone to remember them by. They want to write down events that have changed them or somehow are important to them. In classes, students can write memoirs in order to work through some issues they may have and can come to some sort of resolution. Writing these events down can make the event seem clearer and maybe easier to understand. People create memoirs for others to read. Though they can be a form of personal healing, memoirs are read by other people to also understand the meaning. As Zinsser says, “the author should be concerned on being themselves and not worried about other people.” He said this concerning the people who choose to write memoirs but are worried about the people, places, or events they write about. The writer needs to be able to write the events down without worrying about the repercussions of the piece. Concerning students creating their own memoirs, Zinsser says, “Students do not need to live “eccentric” or “exciting” lives.” He goes on to say that students can write a memoir about their everyday life as a memoir does not necessarily need an intense life-changing moment. The appearance of a memoir is usually in an essay format. Dialogue and basic grammar rules apply to writing a memoir is it is not a free form of writing such as poetry. Correct punctuation for dialogue is also used in writing a memoir. When writing a memoir, the process begins with thinking of an event to write about. It does not necessarily need to be a huge life changing event, as it can be the daily routine of the author or a simple childhood memory. A good way to get the process started is by looking at old pictures from a childhood or vacations. This can spark the author into memories they may have not thought of at first. ................
