October 29, 2020 History AssignmentI. Study for the unit test that covers the DISCOVERY, EXPLORATION, and COLONISATION of America. It would be wise to study your old tests/quizzes, the study guide prepared specifically for this unit test, and class notes. The test covers people, places, events, and vocabulary. There are about 30 multiple choice questions, about 30 matching questions, and several questions that require a short written answer. There is also one major discussion question that you are to complete at home and bring with you to class on Oct. 29. II. Complete at home the ESSAY/DISCUSSION PORTION of the test highlighted below. ONE OF THE MOST PRECIOUS LEGACIES OF THE COLONIAL PERIOD WAS THAT OF SELF-GOVERNMENT. DESCRIBE HOW SELF-GOVERNMENT DEVELOPED IN THE 13 COLONIES. Include in your discussion an explanation as to why colonial citizens desired to govern themselves.Include in your discussion at least 3 specific events, actions, and/or documents talked about in class that promoted the development of self-government in the Colonies.* Include in your discussion the precedent for self-government set by ‘town meetings’.Express your opinion on whether or not the development of self-government in Colonial America was a good thing or bad thing and explain your thinking. *Town Meetings will not qualify as one of the 3 specific events/actions/documents. READ THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTIONS/INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE WRITING YOUR ESSAYThink about what you want to communicate in this essay. THINK FIRST, WRITE SECOND!Identify 3 events, actions, or documents referenced above that promoted self-government. Review the 3 you include in your essay to make sure that what you write is historically accurate. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!Review the origins/purposes of town meetings to make sure that what you write ABOUT them is accurate. Do NOT use GOOGLE when writing this essay. But you are allowed, even encouraged, to use your book and/or your notes as you write this essay. What you write should be in your own words, not the words of some else!!!There is no requirement for how long the paper should be, but short is always better than long when short answers are well worded.Typed papers are preferred. Handwritten papers must be legible...I must be able to read your work. PROOF READ and EDIT your work. Proofing your work will eliminate errors and insure that your paper makes sense…that the reader will understand what you are trying to say. Educated people make an attempt to use correct spelling and punctuation. This is my expectation for you! Do your best!III. MAP ASSIGNMENTKnowing WHERE events took place helps students understand history better. Therefore, take this map assignment seriously. The most effective map review for the unit test is to retake a map quiz from a few weeks ago. But this time it is not a test but a review. Both the map and questions were distributed in class. IV. ORDER OF EVENTS ASSIGNMENTAs a review for the unit test, arrange the following events in the order in which they occurred, beginning with the event that occurred earliest in history. Use your power of reasoning if you are unable to find a specific date for one of these events. Knowing WHEN and in which order key events occurred helps you better understand the story of history better. Just remember that one event or action always leads to another event or action. There is actually some logic to history. ___ Magellan leads an expedition that successfully sails all the way around the world___ The Pilgrims arrive at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts___ Georgia becomes the last of the 13 English Colonies to be established___ Marco Polo travels to China, then writes about his experiences___ Jamestown becomes the first of the 13 colonies to be settled___ The Spanish establish St. Augustine, the first permanent European settlement in the USA___ Gutenberg invents the printing press___ Columbus discovers America___The first slaves arrive in America to work in Virginia tobacco fields ___Prince Henry and others develop new navigational technologies that ushers in the ‘Age of Discovery’ ................
