Yoast SEO for WordPress training ? Module 2.1

Yoast SEO in WordPress

This module is all about the various meta boxes and overviews the Yoast SEO plugin provides in WordPress. In this lesson, we'll start by discussing where you can find Yoast SEO in the WordPress back end. The next two lessons will go into the workings of the Yoast SEO meta box and the Yoast internal linking meta box.

Dashboard

The first spot where you can find the Yoast SEO plugin is on the WordPress dashboard. On the dashboard, you'll see a meta box called Yoast SEO Posts Overview ( Image 1).

This meta box shows you two things: 1. SEO scores In the meta box, you can see the SEO scores of your posts. This way, you can immediately see which posts need improvement when it comes to SEO. If you click the text behind the red, orange, or green bullet, you will be taken to an overview of all the posts that have the same SEO score. What about the grey bullet? Well, that one collects all the posts for which you haven't set a focus keyphrase yet. We'll tell you more about the focus keyphrase in module 3.

2. Latest blog posts At the bottom of this meta box, you'll see the most recent blog posts published on .

Posts and pages overview

You can also find the Yoast SEO plugin in the overview of both the posts and pages (Image 2).

In these overviews, there are extra columns on the right: 1. number of internal links in this post 2. number of internal links linking to this post 3. the SEO score 4. the readability score

The first column shows the internal links counter, which displays the number of links in your post. The second column shows the count of the number of links to your post. The SEO and readability bullets give you an easy overview of the scores for all your posts.

The plugin also adds an extra filter to the ones at the top: the cornerstone content filter. As you've probably already guessed, this filter shows you all of the content you've marked as cornerstone content. If you have Yoast SEO Premium, the plugin creates two additional filters: an orphaned content filter and a s tale cornerstone content filter. Orphaned content is content that doesn't have any links pointing to it. Content that doesn't get links will stay undiscovered by visitors and search engines, so we really recommend you to check if there are any orphaned articles. The stale cornerstone content applies to all your cornerstone content posts or pages, and it assesses when these posts or pages were last updated. If it has been more than six months since the last update, the check will notify you.

Posts and pages editor

When you're editing a page or post, Yoast SEO is also there to help you. You can find Yoast SEO features:

1. in the Yoast SEO sidebar (that opens when you click on the Yoast logo)

2. In the WordPress Post/Page sidebar 3. In the Yoast SEO meta box

The Yoast SEO meta box

Let's take a closer look at all locations. If you scroll down in the posts or pages editor, you will find the Yoast SEO meta box (Image 4).

Image 4: The Yoast SEO meta box We'll go into the contents of this meta box in the next lesson. For now, let's focus on the available headers and tabs. This meta box contains the focus keyphrase input field, collapsible headers, as well as horizontal tabs, which we'll discuss below.

Focus keyphrase

In the Yoast SEO focus keyphrase input field, you can insert your focus keyword or keyphrase (Image 5). That is the search term you want to rank for. So when people search for that phrase, you want them to find your content. Yoast SEO will evaluate your content and give you feedback on how to optimize it for your chosen keyphrase.

Get related keyphrase

Under the Focus keyphrase input field, you will find the Get related keyphrase button (Image 5). The feature is made available in partnership with Semrush. It provides you with insight on related keyphrases for your focus keyphrase, as well as valuable metrics on their use in over 100 languages (Image 6). All Yoast SEO users get access to this feature, but Premium users can add the related keyphrase they choose to their SEO analysis.
