RSS Library

What is RSS and How can it help me with podcasting?

RSS stands for Rich Site Summary; it is also nick-named Really Simple Syndication, because the user is, in effect, setting up a text- or audiofile-delivery system where all the information is likely to be of interest because the sources are hand-picked by you!

Setting up an RSS feed reader is a great way to keep up with developments in technology news, web sites, blogs, podcasts and various subject directories. The benefit of setting up this sort of news tracker or news aggregator is that, rather than constantly going back to visit your favorite/research site to see when it has been updated, an RSS feed can notify you when new information (including podcasts!) has been added to a page. The user can control how many or how few sites are added -- and deleted -- depending on your threshold for information overload.

A brief visual overview (PDF) shows the basics of how RSS works.

For information on what RSS and aggregators are about, read Steven M. Cohen's RSS For Non-Techie Librarians. (). NewsGator () offers a free, online RSS feed that allows you to get both text and podcasts fed to you in the same interface. Once you have set your aggregator up, you can easily add government, medical, business, news and information science websites that have an RSS icon somewhere on their main page. Another good way to locate good feeds is to search for sites that are dedicated to finding RSS feeds, such as RSS in Government which searches for RSS feeds that Government agencies offer. Other feed directories and searfch engines include:

Syndic8:

Blogstreet:

News is Free:

RSS Search Engines include Feedster (), Bloglines () and Yahoo! () -- in the latter, be sure to select "RSS/XML" in the "File Format" pull-down menu

What if your favorite site or journal doesn't have a feed yet?

A couple of sites will help you to create a feed for websites that don’t already have them; it doesn’t work on every site, but it is worth a shot! FeedYes ( ) is a big help in the conversion process: just paste the URL of the page you'd like to “RSS-ify” -- if the page is written in compatible code, FeedYes will produce a feed for you. Alternatively, to create a “news” feed from your favorite personal or professional site, turn to Yahoo, click on the “News” tab, and preface your search with “inurl:” and then put in the URL of the webpage you would like news feeds from; if the website is written in compatible xml, Yahoo will generate a feed and an RSS icon (as demonstrated in the PDF overview above).
