COMMUNICATING YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

An excellent technique for developing accomplishment statements that highlight your skills is the SOAR Formula. SOAR statements are work-related experiences that you enjoyed having and found satisfying where you also created value for the organization or people with whom you were working. Your SOAR statement will not only help you analyze your background but will be useful in preparing your r?sum? and in articulating your value when you are networking or interviewing.

To get started, think of the jobs you held in terms of problems and solutions. Then follow the SOAR formula to outline the facts and develop a list of work-related accomplishments. You can print out the worksheets in this section to develop your list.

In defining results or benefits, consider these: Impacted the bottom line (increased sales/profits, improved customer service) Cut costs (reduced overhead, pared down expenses, consolidated purchases) Developed (budget, training program, new procedures, manual) Innovated (used new technology, new methods, improved old ways of doing things) Increased productivity (more efficient, faster, developed a system) Motivated others (encouraged teamwork, collaborated with others, helped others)

Examples of Accomplishment Statements:

Managed all back-house operations and the coordination of buffet and banquet set-ups, maximizing kitchen productivity and staff performance while ensuring quality control and cost reductions.

Designed and facilitated interactive training to over 300 employees, thus improving customer service capability. Negotiated contracts, made advanced purchases, and performed value analysis, achieving $300,000 in savings. Launched multimedia advertising, public relations and marketing campaigns to increase visibility and market

penetration of the Association. Migrated 250+ users from NT 4.0 domain to Active Directory seamlessly with no down time or disruptions. Doubled the Mid-Atlantic region's sales revenue within 12 months of taking over the territory.
