Word Study

Week 1 focuses on helping verbs.

o A helping verb comes before the main verb to tell about an action or time.

o She will swim in the ocean.

o Helping verb = will

o Helps swim

o Sentence can have multiple helping verbs and main verbs can have multiple helping verbs.

o Examples of helping verbs are: am, is, are, was, were, can, could, has, have, had, and will.

o Replace the helping verb with another possible helping verb. Change the main verb as needed. The first one is done for you!!

Week 2 focuses on linking verbs.

o A linking verb connects the subject in the sentences to a noun or adjectinve in the predicate part of the sentence.

o Bryan was the first in his family to go to college.

o Linking verb = was

o Links Bryan and first

o Examples of linking verbs are: am, is, are, was, were, been, look, appear, become, and seem.

o Fill in the blanks with possible linking verbs. Create more sentences. The first one is done for you!!

Comprehension Strategy – Review Synthesize

o As you read, take time to synthesize information. Synthesizing involves more than simply summarizing the big ideas in what you are reading. When you synthesize, you combine ideas to create new ideas that increase your understanding.

Comprehension Strategy – Creating Images

o Creating mental images can help you understand what you read. Before you read, look at the selection’s title and pictures. Do images come to mind? As you read, use your memories and five senses to create more images.

Grammar – Past, Present, and Future Verb Tense

Week 2 focuses on verb tense.

o Past tense verbs show action that has already happened.

o Usually ends in –ed

o Present tense verbs show action that is happening now.

o Future tense verbs show action that has not yet happened.

o Usually formed by adding will before the verb.

o Write some sentences, underline the verb, and identify if the verb is past, present, or future. The first one has been done for you!
