1. Before reading the story, ask your students if they can define a synonym. Write the definition on chart paper. See if your students are able to brainstorm some different synonyms. If they offer a word that is NOT a synonym, write it on a post-it note and add it to the bottom of the chart paper. After you read the book to the students, you will refer back to those post-it notes and ask the students if these words are synonyms.

2. Read the story Pitch and Throw Grasp and Know by Brian Cleary. Discuss the story and ask guiding questions throughout.

3. {Guided Practice} After you read the story tell the students that they are going to take a ride down Synonym Street. But the only way they can do that is if they match the correct cars with the correct streets. After the students have an understanding of what a synonym is, tell the students that they have to find the synonym cars that match the synonym streets. Tell the students that they will either get a car or a street. Then they will walk around on the carpet and see if they can find their synonym match. When they find their synonym matches on Synonym Street, they must sit down on the carpet with their partner.

4. When all of the students are seated, ask the students for the definition again for What are Synonyms? Write the definition on a sentence strip and display it on the top of the pocket chart.

5. Ask each pair of students to come up to the pocket chart one at a time. They will place their Synonym Street and car in the pocket chart with the car sitting on top of the street, but not blocking the word on the street. Have the pair chorally say their synonyms (ex. "Kind and Nice are synonyms.").
