Thesaurus of Beading

Introduction
Beads are one of the oldest known human art forms and span almost all known human cultures. They can be traced back as far as 40,000 B.C. in the archeological record; shell and bone beads have been found that predate cave paintings and carved figures. Bead historians theorize that bead stringing was the first beading technique using plant fibers (vines) and objects with naturally occurring holes. Bead embroidery in the form of ivory beads stitched onto fur clothing and boots has been found dating back to the Cro-Magnon era and evidence of more elaborate embroidery has been documented in Byzantine mosaics and medieval paintings and tapestries. Bead netting artifacts dated between 664 – 525 B.C. were found in Egypt but historians believe the technique probably predates these artifacts. Brick stitch and peyote stitch are also ancient techniques and been used in the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East. Herringbone stitch has also been traced back to Africa and the Middle East. Right-angle weave appeared in multiple countries including Russia, the Philippines, and Japan with examples dating back to the 17th century. The history of square stitch is more obscure but one researcher believes it may have emerged in China, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Over the past few centuries the popularity of beading as a pass-time has waxed and waned. It is currently enjoying a new resurgence, fueled in part by the availability of materials and interchange of ideas and projects through the Internet. Multiple magazines focused on beading are currently in publication as are many “how-to” books focused on various aspects of beading and a multitude of web sites dedicated to beading.
About this thesaurus
This thesaurus presents a controlled vocabulary for the art of beading and related projects. These terms can be used for indexing and retrieving documents in this subject area. Detailed classification of beads and non-beading jewelry-making supplies and techniques are outside the scope of this thesaurus.
In addition to providing a standardized language for describing a subject, thesauri also provide information about the relationships between terms in the vocabulary. This is accomplished in two ways, through a hierarchical structure and in an annotated alphabetical display. In the hierarchy, terms for more specific concepts are indented beneath terms for broader concepts (e.g. stringing material and silk thread). The alphabetical display lists all constituents of the vocabulary with scope notes defining their meaning within in this thesaurus and their relationship to other terms within the vocabulary. These semantic relationships are:
| | | |
|Broader term |BT |Indicates a related term that is broader in scope. Usually, this will be the more general term |
| | |under which the specific term is indented in the hierarchy. |
| | | |
|Narrower term |NT |Indicates terms that are more specific in scope. These are the terms indented under this term in |
| | |the hierarchy. If there are multiple layers of indentation only the level immediately beneath this|
| | |term is indicated by this relationship. |
| | | |
|Related term |RT |Indicates an associative relationship, one that non-hierarchical. For example, the concept of |
| | |weaving is related to looms and vice versa. The RT relationship is always reciprocal. |
| | | |
|Equivalence |USE |Thesauri encompass both “preferred” terms (e.g. the term chosen to represent a concept in the |
| |UF |vocabulary) and “entry” terms or synonyms to the preferred terms. Users are directed to the |
| | |preferred term for synonyms by the USE relationship. In return, each preferred term in the |
| | |alphabetical contains a list of its synonyms. This relationship is described by the UF or “use |
| | |for” relationship. |
Take for example, the term adhesives.
Adhesives
SN: substances which cause things to stick together. Can also be used to prevent fraying at cut ends.
BT Supplies
NT Cement
Glue
Nail Polish
In this example adhesives are a type of supply, therefore Supplies is a broader term. Cement, glue, and nail polish are types of adhesives and therefore are narrower terms.
The term bending usefully illustrates the concept of a related term. In this instance bending is a method of applying curvature to an object. It is a type of technique used with wire and therefore Wire-working techniques is listed as a broader term. Anvils, hammers, jigs, and pliers are all used to bend materials and therefore are related concepts. Sculpture can be created through bending, wire is material that is bent, and wrapping is technique that is similar to bending – all these concepts are also represented as related terms.

SN: applying curvature.
