This is a sanitary version of my current response when I realized at the end of December 2011 that another World News and Report (USNWR) had arrived and that I was missing my opportunity to vote. Somehow, my questionnaire was lost among the large volume of mail that flowed into my desk. Fortunately, after some frantic communication and determined with USNWR, we headed to the group running the survey (it is subcontracted to someone else) and I was able to submit my opinion. When I looked at the poll, I asked how administrative voters at 124 other colleges and schools in pharmacies listed would have informed the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. They may be aware that a research experiment requires all of our Pharmacy Pharmacies (PharmD) students are a clear and highly valued feature of our curriculum because it was described in a 2011 American Association of Colleges of Pharma Six encounters with a few years ago in a American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education editorial.1 They may know about the positive impact our teachers and alumni had on the pharmacy profession, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and society since 1868. But would they know, for example, that we've instituted a new PharmD curriculum in the past 2 years that many use active learning techniques? Would they know which academic medical centers / our health systems and colleges are operationally, educational, and philosophically integrated? I conclude that only a few of the USNWR survey respondents would know about these defining attributes and most of those people would be our graduates. I also concluded that, despite being in academy for 35 years, I knew obscured little about many of the colleges and schools on the list, especially those plus. I haven't always this invested in the USNWR USNWR survey. In fact, when I got my first questionnaire as a depth in fall 2007, I accidentally completed and returned it. The findings were published in 2008 and we were ranked fifth. That we had endured positively by our fellow educators were free, but because of the survey limitations (e.g., it only measured reputation focused only on our PharmD program, and based its conclusions on a relatively low response rate of 56%), I chose to ignore the results. I suppose everyone else, including our key constituencies (university administrators, alumni, current, and prospective students), would either be unaware of the rankings or ignore the results for the same reasons I had. I was wrong. Quickly after the results were published, I started receiving comments from our PharmD They were upset that we had fallen out of previous ranking (I think that from third to fifth) and that we were tied (rather than outranked) Ohio State University (spillover from 2 university's rivalry to football and other sports). Students wanted to know what I was going to do to improve our standing next time out (a tough question). Similar observations have also happened in our alumni. I was agitated but understand that both constituencies groups are penchant to ensure these dispropositional values of these systems are assigned because they are not familiar with our internal evaluation processes. Then in my chagrin, our university administrator began commenting on their ranking. Fortunately, it was positive for us, as our college was one of many highly ranked units on campus, and our superior alleged giving fode to subjects of playful one-upmanship meetings with my University of Michigan dellegue, to ally otherwise serious meeting topics. However, I also acknowledge that our managers have used these ranks to discuss for more resources as a means to protect or improve their strong/strong reputation, a common administrative practice both nationally and globally.2The collective interest of these ranking systems has been troubled and I've been dealing with a dilemus: how to recognize our positive reputation among our fellow educators, while guards are against future repercussions of unpredictable changes that inevitably occur in reputation surveys. Thus, in the public forum, I acknowledged nonchalancing results: While we recognize the extent of these reputable surveys, we are very pleased that our colleagues. I also tried to determine if there was a way to defend our image from the whim in USNWR surveys. I sought research that would give insight, but my results weren't much help. In fact, they seemed to confirm that reputable surveys, such as the one produced by USNWR, are highly variable because of the variable way in which standards of quality are measured and the hererratic methodology is used.2-4 discouraged, I regard as other options (albeit, facetious): my colleagues (eunuch); curry favor and all other colleges of pharmacy managers I encounter (hard to do and consistent with my brisk personality); or populate each college administrative structure with our alumni (impossible in such a short time frame). I felt increasingly apprehensive about the next survey, secretly hoping that we didn't experience a drop of ranking for no logical reason. Complying, my discovery reaction when I discovered that I had missed the opportunity to fill out the most recent questionnaire. As some may know, the University of Michigan did very well in the 2012 rankment, thanks to the survey assessments given to us by people who value our contributions to pharmacy education. But our University of Michigan constituencies is not likely to be happy. Despite having the exact same score before all editing as there survey, we fell 2 seventh slots. Unlike last time, I was proactive in commenting on the survey. I remember our success but remind everyone that this was a valid reputation survey, partly, our most important measure of accomplishments: student quality, faculty intellectually successful activities, and successful alumni. But I believe pharmacies want to address the USNWR survey in a unified way. All deans want to be held accountable for the results they can influence. The USNWR ranking system does not fit into this category. How can we avoid being assessed by a commercial-driven enterprise more concerned with selling magazines than and measuring accomplishments by goal quality criteria? I suggest some armeliorative ameliorative actions that colleges and schools in pharmacies want to consider:(1) Ignore and not participate. This type of boycotts suggested before.5 US schools of dexter have successfully refused to participate in the USNWR survey for many years, although other ranking of those schools exist. 6-7 (2) Working with USNWR to improve surveys by including quantitative measurements. For example, according to the USNWR site, the survey of medical schools is based on several common indicators such as: selective student/admission statistics (Medical College Admission Test scores, grade point average, and acceptance rate), teacher-to-student ratio; National Institute of Health; and the proportion of graduates entering their primary care specialties. Reputation comprises 20% or less of the medical school model vs. 100% of USNWR's pharmacy school survey.8 While these quantitative measures have criticized average medical schools such as by accurately reflecting the educational quality of schools.9 are better than focused on reputations conducted in the pharmacy survey. (3) Try to expand the number of survey groups. This approach occurs in the global assessment of universities, in which several various rating groups use different methodology to rank or rate their quality. 2,4,10.11 (4) Develop our message to the public and diseminate it consistently and broadly. Other countries used this approach to rate the institutions of higher education and assigned government resources. 11My view is that colleges and schools in pharmacies cannot avoid being rated by informed, third-party agencies. The USNWR stated that its ranking assignments excellent academic programs graduate the country and can start you [the student] on the track towards choosing the right school for you. Clearly, the public agrees with this noble goal, and seems willing to pay for it. (A person can access full online of all USNWR data for an annual fee of $34.95.) 12 although USNWR warnings assigned should not be used as the only criteria to decide where to go to graduate school, 12 research indicates that many prospective students ? for better or worse ? are influenced by By USNWR and other similar organizations when choosing which schools to go to.13 On balance, USNWR rankings are useful to the public as well as university administrators because they promote transparency and institutional responsibility. As such, they also provide an incentive to improve institutional performance.10Colleges and schools in pharmacies should work together on recommendations 2 up to 4. We have a great deal of statistics collected on our colleges and schools from many sources of and outside of pharmacies (e.g., American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, National Association of Frames of Pharmacy, National Institute of Health, National Research Council), as well as internal data. These data are constantly being used by colleges and schools in pharmacies (and others) to assess their success and quality. However, we have been reluctant to share that data with the outside. We need to overcome this republic and work with credible people or groups (e.g., prospective students, public administrators and universities, and alumni/assessments) to identify a clear set of indicators that can be used to measure a college process or an impact in a more systematic way--a globally prevalent approach to evaluating universities in general.2,4,11Colleges and schools of pharmacy should be judged on student factors such as who admits, satisfaction with the program, and their ability to choose the career path of choice on graduation. Colleges and schools of pharmacies also should be assessed on the quality of teacher membership, especially the intellectual activities they do with the recognition (e.g., award, prestile academic position leadership) they receive. The fulfillment of alumni should also be considered. But ultimately, the success of a college or school must be assessed based on the accomplishment of its mission, which in our case is striving for: excellence in education, service and research, all directions to improve the health and quality of life of the people in the State of Michigan, the nation and the international community. 14As mean, I can influence these measures in our college and institute plans to achieve success. However, I can't do much about the current USNWR ranking system, except to process the results in an anbiguous way. So until we create a better system to publicly evaluate and promote our respective institutions, we will all stay wondering where our pharmacy programs will be ranked next time.
