The Pearl

The Song Project

OVERVIEW

Throughout The Pearl the lives of Kino and those of his community are framed by songs. Kino hears the Song of the Family, the Song of Evil, the Song of the Undersea, the Song of the Pearl That Might Be, and the Song of the Enemy. Songs reflect Kino's innermost thoughts and desires and, consequently, are an important part of his life.

TASK

Step One: You will search through your vast repertoire of music and select songs that you think best express the feelings associated with each of the following songs that Kino hears throughout The Pearl. Chooses one song for each of the following:

the Song of the Family

the Song of Evil

the Song of the Undersea

the Song of the Pearl That Might Be

the Song of the Enemy

Step Two: Carefully consider why you have chosen the song to match a song above. Be careful to note melody, lyrics, choices of instruments, etc. For each match explain your choice in a paragraph of no less than eighty words. Your explanation should include details of the feelings or thoughts that the song evokes through melody, lyrics, or choice of instruments. Your explanation should also include specific references to events within The Pearl that call the music to mind. (See my sample on the back.)

Step Three: Organize the song lyrics (liner notes) and interpretations/analysis in a Word or Google document. First, present the words to a song (liner notes). Second, present a brief explanation of the song. Third, present your interpretation/analysis of that song. (Again, see the back for my sample.)

Step Four: Consider the final scene of The Pearl and write your own song lyrics to appropriately capture the thoughts or feelings of Kino, Juana, or both. Your song may rhyme or it may be written in free verse. It must be a minimum of fifteen lines. Include your song within your report.

Step Five: Include an album or CD cover with your report. On your cover page draw a thematic representation of your album as a whole. Color or embellish as necessary.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

a. typed

b. 12 font

c. an album/CD cover which includes your name, your class section (022-), and your illustration

SCORING RUBRIC

A follows the directions to the letter; includes few, if any, errors in spelling, grammar, and/or mechanics; demonstrates creative, original, and accurate analysis by matching specific and important evidence from the chosen song to specific and important events from the story; demonstrates insightful, original, and creative understanding of the closing scene of the story in the original song; Project is well-crafted, striking, designed with a distinct style but still appropriate for the purpose; combines different elements into a coherent whole.

B follows the directions with few exceptions; includes few errors in spelling, grammar, and/or mechanics; demonstrates good analysis by matching strong evidence from the song to strong evidence from the story; demonstrates effective understanding of the closing scene of the story in an original song; Project has some interesting touches, but lacks a distinct style; has some elements that may be excessive or do not fit together well.

C generally follows the directions but includes some egregious exceptions; includes some egregious errors in spelling, grammar, and/or mechanics; demonstrates average analysis by matching perfunctory or ineffectual evidence from the song to evidence from the story; demonstrates marginally effective understanding of the closing scene of the story in an original song; Project is safe, ordinary, made in a conventional style; has several elements that do not fit together; it is a mish-mash.

D neglects to follow many of the directions; includes many egregious errors in spelling, grammar, and/or mechanics; demonstrates poor and/or ineffective analysis by matching little to no evidence from the song to evidence from the story; demonstrates little, if any, understanding of the closing scene of the story in an original song; Project lacks creative elements, little evidence of style or theme.

F unacceptable (does not follow any or almost none of the expectations described above); Project has no evidence of creativity, style or theme.

*The bold type criteria carries the most weight.

Sample of Steps Two and Three

Bad Moon Rising

(J. Fogerty)

I see the bad moon arising.

I see trouble on the way.

I see earthquakes and lightnin'.

I see bad times today.

Chorus:

Don't go around tonight,

Well, it's bound to take your life,

There's a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes ablowing.

I know the end is coming soon.

I fear rivers over flowing.

I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Chorus

All right!

Hope you got your things together.

Hope you are quite prepared to die.

Looks like we're in for nasty weather.

One eye is taken for an eye.

Chorus

Chorus

Bad Moon Rising from Credence Clearwater Revival best expresses the meaning of The Song of Evil in The Pearl. The song predicts disastrous natural events such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods. Line 11 adds, "I hear the voice of rage and ruin." Whenever Kino is surrounded by his enemies -- the doctor, the pearl buyers, and the trackers -- he thinks of doom. For example, when a pearl buyer makes an offer on Kino's pearl, Kino "felt the creeping of fate, the circling of wolves, the hover of vultures. He felt the evil coagulating about him, and he was helpless to protect himself. He heard in his ears the evil music." The "creeping", "circling", "hover", and "coagulating" of evil that Kino hears in this scene express the same feelings as the speaker in Bad Moon Rising who is "prepared to die" and who is looking out "for nasty weather." In this way, Bad Moon Rising is an appropriate song for The Song of Evil.
