VE day 2020 By Rohan ThiaraWhat is VE day?VE day is a celebration that represents the end of WW2 and stands for victory in Europe.What happened on this day 75 years ago?Germany surrendered because the USA, Canada, Britain, France and Russia (Allied Forces) invaded Germany and the WW2 ended.Where did it happen?VE day was observed on the 8th of May 1945 in Britain, Western Europe, The United States and Australia.How did people react/feel?There were feelings of happiness and relief. Although the war was over, lots of families lost their loved ones, who never returned so there was also the feeling of grief. Who celebrated? The Allied Forces celebrated the end of the 2nd World War.How did people celebrate?Colourful bunting and flags decorated the streets, villages, towns and cities across Britain. Bonfires were lit and people danced.How will this year’s commemorations be different to other years?This years early May Bank Holiday has been moved to Friday 8th May, to commemorate VE day to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the end of WW2.How is the war effort and the sacrifices made during WW2 similar/different to todays lockdown and the fight to beat coronavirus?During WW2, soldiers from all over the world left their families to go and fight for their countries. During the current Covid-19 world-wide pandemic, the NHS staff and Key workers are putting their own lives at risk in order to care and provide for others. Throughout the war the soldiers were fighting against the enemy on the frontline in order to protect their freedoms. Today the NHS staff and Key workers are also considered to be on the frontline in the fight against Covid-19. In both scenarios heroes have sacrificed their lives fighting to protect others on the frontline. ................
