TRENCH WARFARE

The British and French troops lined up against the German troops along a front which began in the west and extended eastwards.

From 1914 to 1918 the western front did not move more than 32 kilometres in any direction.

In a series of horrific battles, millions of lives were lost for the gain of only a few kilometers.

The trenches were built to protect the troops from machine gun fire.

Soldiers ate, slept, kept guard in the trenches.

However, with severe rain, the trenches became muddy, water-logged and disease-ridden.

Attacks involved the troops going over the barbed wire and machine guns of the enemy.

The area of land between the opposing forces’ front-line trenches was called No Man’s Land.
