The Story Of India: Ages Of Gold

Sunday, 19 April 2009

This episode tells the story of India in the Middle Ages - the Golden Age of the Gupta empire. Michael Wood shows some of the amazing achievements of medieval India. In astronomy they discovered the heliocentric universe, absolute zero and the circumference of the Earth; they mastered the world's first large-scale cast iron technology - the Delhi iron pillar; and their courtly culture was the setting of the world's first sex manual, the Kama Sutra, written in the 5th century.

In the south, Michael visits the Cholan capital at Tanjore and, with extraordinary privileged access, goes right inside the greatest temple of that time (founded in 1010) to see the ancient rituals still being performed. He watches traditional bronze-casters making religious images for the temples, just as their ancestors did 1500 years ago.

He also visits a traditional Tamil family in the temple city of Chidambaram, goes with them on pilgrimage and witnesses the ancient mountaintop festival of fire that was already famous in 700AD!

Dirt Game: A Land Down Under

New Series

Sunday, 19 April 2009

From dark tunnels deep underground and the vast expanse of the Australian desert to the slick boardrooms of London, the new six-part Australian drama series Dirt Game delves into the lives of the passionate men and women working in this tough business. Where one wrong move, either in the pit or in the boardroom, could be your last.

A stellar cast, including Joel Edgerton, Shane Connor, Freya Stafford and Katie Wall, bring to life the world of mining and international corporate highflyers.

Cockatoo Creek Resources, CCR, is an Australian mining company with gold, copper, nickel and gas. Burdened with financial, environmental and safety issues, CCR is also teetering on the brink of collapse and parent company, London-based Albion Energy (AEL) isn't happy.

They appoint UK executive Brian Jardine (Gerald Lepkowski) as the new CEO with strict instructions to save CCR or dump it. With his marriage slowly falling apart, Brian leaves his wife Tess (Lucy Bell) and daughter, and heads to Australia.

Brian enlists CCR geologist Megan Kerr (Freya Stafford) to head up a crisis-management team. She pulls together an unlikely group from both sides of the fence, including, veteran mining engineer Max Mees (Shane Connor), union delegate Shane Bevic (Joel Edgerton), and a feisty environmentalist, Caz Cohen (Katie Wall).

The first task is to get CCR's nickel pit back in operation after a fatal accident shut it down. But with the emotionally charged workers out on strike, a body proving impossible to recover and a bank threatening legal action, the pressure is on. Will this ill-matched team be able to get the pit back on track, placate the workers and save the nickel orders?

Meanwhile, Brian learns from an anonymous source that someone might be sabotaging his work at CCR - potentially from within the very Board he reports to.

Compass: Windows To Sandakan

Sunday, 19 April 2009

One of the worst atrocities involving POWs in WW2 unfolds in this moving Compass Anzac special about the making of a series of stained glass windows for an historic Anglican church in Malaysian Borneo. After 60 years, Australian stained glass artist Philip Handel is about to retire when he receives an offer too tempting to refuse: to make a series of windows for a church in Sandakan, once the capital of British North Borneo, and now a busy port in the Malaysian state of Sabah.

The windows will pay tribute to the 2500 Allied prisoners of war who died building an airstrip for the Japanese, and on the notorious 'Death Marches' that followed. They will also honour the local people who risked their lives to help them. The windows are destined for St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in Sandakan where the allied prisoners spent their first night before being marched to the POW camp.

Spooks

Monday, 20 April 2009

A plane crashes near an American airbase and MI5 fear it may have been shot down on purpose.

The team needs to find out if Iran is involved as the reprisals could spiral into war.

With the team unaware of her kidnap, Ros (Hermione Norris) is subjected to mental torture, but when released, she learns that it was all a recruitment exercise. Yalta is a shadowy international group of double agents and senior government officials who work together in an attempt to thwart American dominance in world politics, and they want Ros to join them.

With their offer playing on her mind, Ros returns to the Grid where she and Jo (Miranda Raison) interrogate a source who reveals the Americans were illegally testing their controversial new spy plane, Aurora, in UK airspace when it collided with a freight plane.

The team investigates Aurora's recent flight routes and learns that the craft also tracked MI5's recent operation in Tehran.

It becomes clear America was behind the false intelligence which led to MI5 setting off the bomb in Tehran. Knowing that the bomb would expose Iran's possession of biological weapons, the US hoped to justify military action towards them.

Learning that the US is prepared to manipulate Britain, its closest ally, is the motivation Ros needs to make her first contact with Yalta. Not for the first time, she is on the path to becoming a traitor.

Around The World In 80 Gardens: Australia And New Zealand

Tuesday, 21 April 2009

This spectacular series continues, as British garden writer and presenter Monty Don, lands in Australia and New Zealand - two of the youngest gardening cultures in the world - on the second leg of his incredible global journey visiting 80 of the world's most celebrated and stunning gardens, from ancient to modern, large to small, and grand to humble.

Monty sets out from the aptly named Botany Bay to uncover a story of culture clash and invasion, where the gentle habits of the Indigenous people and the extraordinary natural landscapes have been dashed aside in favour of imported plants and a very 'English' garden style. He visits Alice Springs Desert Park, a re-creation of the natural habitat, and a private garden in Sydney that emulates that rich, red earth. During his visit he gets a private tour from Dame Elisabeth Murdoch of her beautiful Melbourne garden. In New Zealand, he sets off in search of the wild heart of the country, where he revels in a magical rainforest garden created entirely of native plants.

Highlights in this episode include: Botany Bay, The Royal Sydney Botanical Gardens, the Alice Springs Desert Park, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch's garden in Melbourne and two stunning gardens in the North Island of New Zealand

Artscape: Anatomy: Heart

Tuesday, 21 April 2009

Anatomy is a documentary series comprised of three unusual and compelling stories - Skin, Heart and Muscle - which explore how sexuality and the body work together as driving forces in the creative process.

The second film in the series, Heart, examines what makes a muse. Traditionally thought of as a woman who is the artistic inspiration of the male, what happens when both parties of the relationship are artists and both are women? KABOOM!

Jacqui Stockdale is a prolific and successful artist. Enigmatic and darkly beautiful, Jacqui is the kind of girl other girls (and boys) fall in love with. Rose Mastroianni is a natural entertainer and a loose cannon.

In the early 90s Rose and Jacqui met on the promenade of the Salamanca Markets in Hobart. Rose says she fell in love with Jacqui's wildness, her half woman/half horse spirit. At the time Jacqui was in a relationship with a piano accordion player, Svetlana. Jacqui asked Rose to become her life model, and in the process of painting her, she fell for Rose, too. For the next few years, they had an affair whilst Jacqui maintained her relationship with Svetlana.

Heart is an observational documentary which inter-cuts archival and present day footage to study the core of this 16-year-long artist-muse collaboration.

Recently Jacqui embarked on another portrait of Rose. In following Jacqui's painting, the history and nature of their relationship is revealed. As such Heart is an intimate insight into the power and destruction of love within the artistic process.

Heart won Best Documentary at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Lawrence Leung's Choose Your Own Adventure: Be Cool

Wednesday, 22 April 2009

Lawrence always wanted to be cool. He always wanted to do a backflip and to breakdance like his hero, the 80s breakdance pioneer Shabba Doo from the movies Breakin' and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.

When Lawrence tries to do a backflip in his parents' home he puts his foot through the wall. Mrs Leung is not pleased. But neither is Lawrence, as the incident serves to reinforce his feeling that he's never been cool.

This week's quest then is to become cool. So Lawrence registers for a big breakdancing crew battle in Federation Square, using fake credentials and a fake crew, Shabba Law Law are coming at ya!

Despite his parents' misgivings, Lawrence heads to Los Angeles, the home of cool, his hero Shabba Doo, and the best breakdancers in the world. There he immerses himself in the hip-hop world, and with the assistance of his new friend and breakdance teacher, B-Boy Drew Looner, he starts to learn some moves.

He also goes down to South Central LA to be mentored in rap by Rifleman, the so-called 'fastest rapper in the West'.

Lawrence adopts a rap name, Shabba Law Law, builds his coolness and his confidence with Rifleman, and takes part in a midnight curbside 'cypher' (a freestyle rap battle on the street, as featured by Eminem in the movie 8 Mile). His rhymes about his innocent, 'uncool' life win respect from the tough sharks in the pool. He is starting to talk the talk - but he still can't quite walk the walk. For Lawrence though, help is at hand - he gets a chance to meet his hero, the one and only Shabba Doo.

Now he's got some moves and some confidence, he and his Shabba Law Law crew, featuring Lawrence's real and equally uncool friends, must finally compete at the big crew battle in Federation Square, in his hometown of Melbourne. Let's Dance!

Lost In Flanders

Thursday, 23 April 2009

Ninety years after the last shots were fired, two young Australian historians embark on an emotional journey to the battlefields of the First World War on the infamous Western Front.

History teacher Michael Molkentin joins battlefield historian Mat McLachlan in an exploration of the Australian soldiers' wartime experience in Belgium. The two young men visit iconic sites, and join an archaeological excavation of the trenches and fields where 20,000 Australians went missing, their bodies lost, their graves unmarked.

While Michael and Mat fail to uncover any soldiers' remains, a twist of fate sees local workers uncover the bodies of five Australian soldiers, while laying a gas pipe nearby. The discovery sparks a unique investigation, bringing science and military history together, involving Michael and Mat in a gripping forensic detective story that leads them back to rural Australia.

Through DNA testing, used for the first time on First World War remains, two of the bodies are ultimately identified and finally laid to rest in graves marked with their names. As Michael and Mat trace the stories of the missing soldiers, and meet their descendants, they learn more about the cost of Australia's involvement in the war.

Speaking with the soldiers’ families, visiting the towns where they grew up, walking the ground where they died and finally standing by their gravesides as the men are laid to rest, Michael and Mat rediscover a vital episode in Australian history which illuminates the real sacrifice of the thousands of Australians who lost their lives in Flanders.

Her ex-boyfriend is the initial suspect because of an earlier incident, and her much older husband has trouble explaining why she was out without him.

Foyle's War: The German Woman

Repeat

Saturday, 25 April 2009

Repeat screenings of the ever popular Foyle's War commence on ABC1, at 10:05pm.

It's May 1940 and Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) believes he would be better used aiding the war effort than investigating domestic crime in Sussex.

His boss, Assistant Commissioner Summers (Edward Fox) disagrees, and sends him back to Hastings where Foyle soon finds himself investigating a scam that avoids enlistment.

An elderly couple, German Thomas Kramer (David Horovitch), and his English wife Elsie (Elizabeth Bell) are arrested in the middle of the night at their cottage in the village of Lower Fenton.

They are declared 'enemy aliens' and interned, causing Elsie to suffer a fatal heart attack.

The Kramer's nephew Mark Andrews (Benedict Sandiford) seeks help from local landowner and magistrate Henry Beaumont (Robert Hardy). When Henry appears uninterested in the case, Mark loses his temper, asking why Beaumont's wife Greta (Joanna Kanska) - a German - is still enjoying her freedom.

The next day, Greta is brutally murdered while out riding her horse and a swastika is found carved into a nearby tree.

Foyle needs an assistant and chooses Paul Milner (Anthony Howell), a former police sergeant who has been badly wounded at Trondheim. The two begin their investigation - and soon discover plenty of people had reason to kill Greta.

Sunday Arts

This week on Sunday Arts we hear from comedians Judith Lucy and Janeane Garofalo in One-on-One, an occasional series of conversations between artists.

One-on-One: Judith Lucy and Janeane Garofalo

One of Australia's most successful comedians Judith Lucy chats with American comedian Janeane Garofalo. Both have appeared on TV and in feature films, both have hosted radio programs, both are openly feminist, both share Irish heritage, and both are renowned for their incredibly honest brand of stand-up comedy poking fun at popular culture and idealised images of women promoted in the media.

Having met overseas several years ago, Judith Lucy and Janeane Garofalo get together to discuss their successes, failures and deep panic at appearing on stage in front of large groups of people, like for instance, at the 2009 Melbourne Comedy Festival where they're each presenting brand new stand-up shows.

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors brings you the latest from the world of Australian invention. As we go through life encountering problems great and small, the inventors of Australia are thinking to themselves, "there must be a better way"…

Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: engineer James Bradfield Moody, designer Alison Page, and inventor and journalist Christine Kininmonth.

Inventions featured on the program:

Invention 1 GLOWBOAT- by inventor Dr Barry Rogers from VIC

When small boats venture out at night time visibility is poor, creating an increased danger of collisions at sea. The Glowboat uses special technology to allow a boat to glow in the dark. It is made from a polymer plastic that contains uniquely formulated photo luminescent crystals that are renewed indefinitely through solar power. A solar collecting cell stores heat by day and acts directly on the specially designed plastic, causing it to emit illumination without electricity or electronics. This means it will never fail due to electrical faults or other mechanical problems. The Glowboat will ensure you can always be seen on the water, keeping you safe from collision at any time of day.

Glowboat - keeping you safe at sea

Invention 2 THE CUTTER - by inventor Bill Rayner from NSW

As much as we've come to rely on them, scissors are far from ideal tools. Conventional scissors are tiring to use for extended periods and struggle to produce smooth, straight cuts. The Cutter is a handheld paper trimming tool, of similar shape to a computer mouse. The invention is comprised of a fixed blade and rotating disk, which are actuated by rolling The Cutter forward along four small wheels positioned on its underside. It is a one-handed operation, as the invention holds the paper down as it operates. All that is required is to push the device where you want to cut. The Cutter makes clean, straight, continuous cuts through up to 5 sheets of paper on any flat surface and can turn sharp corners mid-cut. Its ergonomic design makes cutting comfortable, accurate and easy.

The Cutter - cut down on scissor stress

Invention 3 PLASTIPOLE - by inventor Nick Wotton from SA

Locking up a garbage bin may sound like a strange idea, but the rates of wheelie bin theft are remarkably high, with 1400 thefts reported in one South Australian city council alone. Current bin locks are made of steel, which rusts and deteriorates with wear. PlastiPole is an easy to install bin retention system for public areas, institutions and commercial facilities. Its body is manufactured from 100% recycled material and can be retrofitted to existing bin sites. The design has proven to be as robust as metal, but is safer and longer lasting. The originality of the locking mechanism lies in its ability to ‘slam lock’, rather than having to replace the bin and then lock the mechanism by turning a key or clamping a padlock. PlastiPole has an easy release system for convenient and fast emptying when unlocked.

Plastipole - keep wandering bins where they belong

Catalyst

Very Large Telescope

High up in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile is a complex of some of the largest telescopes in the world at the cutting edge of optical technology. When Dr Paul Willis travelled there for Catalyst he discovered there was not just one very large telescope, but four, which could be linked to make a super telescope whose dish has a virtual diameter of 150 metres. These highly sophisticated telescopes are so powerful that they can see light from ten billion year old galaxies. The observatory is located at over 2,000 metres above sea level, where the clean dry air offers near perfect visibility for studying the outer reaches of the universe. Last year the very large telescope was the first to provide direct images of planets orbiting other stars. While there Paul met Australian astrophysicist Christopher Lidman, whose chosen subject, Dark Energy, is a force that may help answer why the universe is expanding at an ever increasing rate.

Heart Valves

Heart disease comes in a variety of forms. One of the most common in the elderly,is 'aortic stenosis' when the main outflow valve from the heart thickens and does not open fully. For the elderly patient this means less blood reaches the body and even the simplest task becomes hard work. Normally patients undergo open heart surgery to replace a faulty heart valve. But this is a costly and risky operation that involves a long recovery period. For ‘aortic stenosis’ sufferers, open heart surgery may soon be a thing of the past.Dr Maryann Demasi meets surgeon, Dr Ajay Sinhal, who's leading a pioneering trial into a non-invasive technique for replacing heart valves.

Solar Prints

What do plastic bank notes have to do with solar energy? Quite a lot actually. Australian scientists, developing solar cells made with the same polymer technology, have already found a way of printing solar cells just like Australia's revolutionary bank notes. Currently, most solar cells are made from silicon, but its high cost, coupled with a complex production process has meant the take up of this technology has been slow. Printing solar cells offers a potential breakthrough for the solar energy market. Mark Horstman meets scientists who hope one day to print solar cells by the kilometre at the same factory that produces polymer banknotes.
