Sapphire Lakes Annual Meeting

Date: Wednesday, March 1st, 2017

Place: Pool 3

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Please join us after the formal meeting for a “Social Hour”. Please bring a finger food to share and your beverage of choice.

Bake Sale

Just a last minute reminder that our Annual Bake Sale will be this Saturday, March 4th at Pool 3. We appreciate all of the mouth watering treats that you so graciously donate especially the various cookies, cupcakes, pies, cakes and the delectable loaves of bread that sell so quickly. We also have a need for sugar free and gluten free products. Last year we had a fabulous array of wonderful homemade treats that made it difficult to make a selection. This is an important project for the Activities Team as all of the proceeds from the sale go toward further enhancing the amenities in our wonderful community. No Master Association money is spent on the many recreational activities and amenities that add so much value to your home as well as the enjoyment of all residents. Please bring all of the baked goods to the Pool 3 Pavilion on SATURDAY, March 4th, between 9:30 am – 10:30 am. You may also call to drop off the items early or have them picked up at your home at your convenience. The sale starts promptly at 11:00 am. Thank you.

Connie Fullerton 239-353-3946

Logo Sale

Our last Logo Sale for this season will be on March 4th, 2017 at the same time as our annual Bake Sale at the Pool 3 Cabana.  We will be taking orders for a variety of items including shirts, hats, sweatshirts, and T-shirt dresses or cover-ups embroidered with the Sapphire Lakes Logo, or plain if you prefer.  Orders typically take 2-3 weeks to come in.

Although we appreciate all of your past orders, and enjoy seeing so many friends in the community wearing them, we find that the number of items ordered this year has significantly declined, so we have decided to skip a year and will not be conducting a logo sale next season in 2018.  Our next logo sale will be in January 2019.

Ladies Luncheons

We have heard nothing but nice compliments from the ladies who attended the February luncheon at the Watermark Grille. We had a great time enjoying the fine company and the ambiance. The food was outstanding, the presentation was beautiful and the servers could not have been more pleasant or efficient. Some of the waiters have served us in the past and the comments and repartee added to the fun. We did not meet the number of 151 as we did in 2016, however, the owners welcomed us and did a fantastic job as always. If you should return to the Watermark Grille at any time, please mention our wonderful luncheon and perhaps they will be gracious enough to invite us back in the future. We hope that you will join us each month as we meet new friends and enjoy new restaurants in the Naples area. The March luncheon attendance is limited so we ask that you get your paid reservation in early. If we meet our maximum number of guests prior to the “reserve by” date we will need to close the reservations. Connie Fullerton 239-353-3946

We sometimes have items left in our pantry at the end of the season that we cannot take home with us. ACTIVITIES

Horseshoes

It's hard to believe that our horseshoe season is quickly coming to an end. We have had excellent weather and very good games over the season. There is only 7 games separating the top and bottom teams as I write this newsletter. It looks like the last three days of the tournament will decide who wins the t-shirts and it may come down to the last shoe on the last day. Our Hamburger Monday on January 30th at Beef O'Brady went well and we will have another one on February 27th. ‎Open play continues through into April so please continue to come out and have some fun.

Ren Job 239-455-1103

Aquabics

Aquabics are held Monday to Saturday at both Pool #1 and Pool #2. Pool #1 begins at

Bocce League

Please note that this season everyone is eligible to sign up for the Gender Game on Wednesday, March 22nd. A sign-up sheet is on the Bocce Bulletin Board and we need more volunteers so get over there and sign-up for a fun, fun day! Drawing of players will take place at the Pizza Picnic on March 15th. All regular and active substitute players are eligible.

This season we have been most fortunate with weather conditions and have had rescheduling at a minimum. And once again our volunteers for court maintenance and refereeing have done another great job! Thanks to all! Everyone has enjoyed playing and watching some great bocce!

Bocce Semi-Finals will be played on Wednesday, March 8th (rain dates March 9th or March 10th) beginning at 9:00 a.m. on both courts. Schedule will be posted on the Bocce Bulletin Board. Please note there will be no changes to rain dates required for play-offs.

Super Bocce Game followed by the annual Pizza Party will be Wednesday, March 15th (rain dates March 16th or March 17th) at 3:00 p.m. on Court Two. The Pizza Party is open to all players, spouses and houseguests (including active substitutes). The cost is $7.00 per person to be paid to each Captain by Wednesday, March 8th. These funds will be collected by each division coordinator – North-Chet Bussert, South-Bill Sparhawk, East-Jack Morrison and West-Keith Fogel.

Gender Game On Wednesday, March 22nd, beginning at noon, hot dogs and water as well as desserts will be available at $1 each. This year chili dogs will be sold at a cost of $2 while supplies last. The Gender Games will begin at 10:30 am on Court 2 with the two ladies’ teams playing followed by the two men’s team. The winning teams will begin their challenge at 1:00 p.m. Remember, you do not need to be a bocce player to attend this event! All are welcome!

Your bocce committee:

Keith Fogel, Chairperson, Terry Bachand, Chet Bussert, Jack Morrison, Bill Sparhawk, Joel Tapley & Tony Voislow

Next Season (2018) Bocce Sign-up

As some players will be leaving Sapphire Lakes before the April Newsletter is delivered, we want to remind bocce players from this season they will automatically be on the list for next season. This includes all full time players as well as substitutes. However, if you will not be playing in the 2018 season, please let us know no later than January 1, 2018.

Anyone not currently playing bocce but interested in signing up now (or during the summer months), to ensure you are included on the roster to play bocce next season, may do so by contacting Chet Bussert at (bussertchet@) or Jack Morrison (jamorrison62@). This is especially important if you are not returning next season until January 2018. Those signing up after the required number of players has been reached will be considered substitutes.

Sapphire Lakes Tennis

We are pleased to report that all courts are now being used on most days and times except maybe on Tuesdays.  And on some days we have to rotate players as we have more than 4 courts can accommodate.  We are experiencing great cooperation and equally great competition.  Cooperation with the scheduling of tennis and pickle ball is working well.  A second social was held at Foxboro Sports Pub with 26 players and spouses present.  The tennis Annual Picnic will be held on March 27th at the picnic area and a final social gathering at Foxboro will be held on Monday,

April 3rd or April 10th..  Let us continue to have fun and enjoy our play. Bill Kearney 239-348-2871

Sapphire Lakes Tennis Team

The Sapphire Lakes Men’s Tennis Team had another good month in February and managed to hold their position at the top of the “B” League of the East Naples Tennis Association with 8 other local community teams. Our team has now compiled a record of 18 wins against 6 losses as of February 21st. In its last three matches the team defeated Cedar Hammock 3-1; lost 3 out of 4 at The Glades, and split 2-2 with Countryside. The team has two regular season matches remaining versus the Foxfire Foxes and the Naples Heritage (Red) teams. Matches are played on Tuesday mornings through the month of March and consist of four doubles matches each week. The players on the squad include: Rick Kaczmarczyk, Gary Sykes, Bob Foster, Keith Salisbury, Neal Ribeiro, Tom Costigane, Royd March, Keith Fogel, Andrew Delicio and Bill Kearney.

Bob Foster, Captain

Pickleball

We ask for a $5 donation from each player to allow us to buy enough pickleballs to accommodate use at all four courts. If you have any questions, please call either Chris Medford 239-234-6922 or Brian North 239-331-2621.

Comcast Fiber Optics Rebuild

In early February Comcast began the actual Fiber Optics Rebuild by trenching behind and alongside all of our community’s buildings to bury the conduit that will eventually contain the Fiber Optics that will replace our current Coaxial cable. This new Fiber will provide us with much more bandwidth for our Video signal which is extremely important in this age of streaming video on not only our televisions, but all of our other electronic devices. The new Fiber will also provide us with the capability for a much faster Internet signal as well. The burying of the conduit by Cypress Signal Co., a sub-contractor for Comcast, began on February 5th and they are close to completing that phase. The next phase will be the “fiber drop” which will involve running the Fiber Optics wire through the conduit and to the side of each building and then into each of our 590 units. The individual units are NOT going to be completely re-wired. The Fiber will be brought to an ONT (hub) in each unit (which for most of our units is in the Utility Room). Therefore, unit owners will NOT have to move furniture away from their outlets because they will not be touched. It would be helpful if the Utility Rooms are not cluttered, but made accessible to the technicians.

There will be two occasions when Comcast will need access to each of the 590 units within Sapphire Lakes. The first occasion will be the “fiber drop” which should begin in early to mid-March. Unit owners will be contacted by the contractor to arrange a day and time that they will access the unit to connect the fiber to the ONT. Our Property Manager Karl Forsman will be providing the contractor with an up-to-date list of unit owners with addresses and phone numbers. If you’re not sure if Karl has your current phone number, please provide it to him as soon as possible. The second occasion that the individual units will need to be accessed will be the actual installation of the four pieces of equipment that each unit will receive: X1 DVR, X1 Companion HD Box, HD-DTA and Modem with a wireless router.

This second access phase should be started by the Comcast Team sometime in late summer. Once again unit owners will be contacted and an appointment will be scheduled. For those unit owners who are not present in Naples when this phase (or the first unit access phase) occurs, you have several choices: your condo watcher or a trusted neighbor can provide the access, or you can schedule an appointment with Comcast when you return to Naples. Owners will have until 90 days after the whole community has been switched over to the new fiber optics to schedule a free appointment. If you currently have those four pieces of equipment from Comcast, you won’t need to have them installed and those items will be taken off of your individual Comcast bill when the switchover is made. Currently the timeline for that switchover is estimated to be October 1st, but that date can be modified as the project progresses.

For updates on this whole process and any changes in the timeline, please check our Sapphire Lakes website () and on the Home page click on “President’s Corner”.

President’s Corner

As we begin the month of March we can only hope that the terrific weather that we have been experiencing continues through this winter season. Our community is extremely busy with social activities of all kinds and I’ve heard numerous positive comments from one end of the community to the other about life at Sapphire Lakes. A reminder to all unit owners that the Master Association Annual Meeting is Wednesday, March 1st at the Pool 3 Cabana at 6:30 pm. It will be immediately followed by a Social Gathering, so please feel free to bring a finger food to share and your own beverage of choice if you’d like to stay after the meeting for some friendly conversation and refreshments.

I would like to congratulate the Activities Team for sponsoring such a very successful sixth annual Chili Fiesta Night at Pool #3 on February 7th. The crowd of over 120 people was delighted with the quality of the food and the entertaining music provided by the DJ. The Chili Fiesta has established itself as one of the highlight events of each winter season. I would also like to congratulate the Bocce Committee for once again organizing such a competitive and friendly Bocce League season that will culminate with the Bocce Super Bowl on March 15th. It always amazes me how many new people I come to know during each bocce season. As we begin the month of March the weather looks to be better than ever, and many of the season’s activities will have their culminating events and gatherings, so our social calendars will be very full all month.

You have probably noticed that the Comcast Construction Team is in full swing with our Fiber Optics rebuild throughout the community. The first phase, the laying of the conduit, is close to completion and we are hopeful that by mid-March the “fiber drop” to the buildings and the individual units will commence. There will be two occasions when the contractors and/or Comcast Team will need to gain access to each unit, and communication between all of those concerned will be crucial. You can always go to our community website () and at the top of the Home page click on “President’s Corner” to see the latest information about the fiber rebuild. I try to keep that page updated at least every week or two as new information becomes available.

Bob Foster, President

Treasurer’s Report

As previously reported we closed the books on 2016 with a surplus of $112,125 in operating funds; $88,500 is from the signing bonus with Comcast while $23,625 was from being under budget in 2016. That is $2,348 more than estimated in our 2017 budget. We will also save around $13,000 on our pools as the Board decided to go with a service company to maintain the pools. Bottom line, that means we have a surplus of around $24,000 in the 2017 operating budget. Also, we just moved $78,000 of the Comcast money to a CD paying 1.45% interest.

Regarding our Reserves. After returning $293,578 to the 15 associations as they take over responsibility of Carports, Garages and Driveways, we ended the year with $291,087.69. We earned $4,887 in interest on our reserve funds. That’s just under 1%. Currently we have $103,667 in a CD paying 1.31% interest and $103,667 in a money market account paying .96%

Thanks, Reg (Mike) Mears

SAPPHIRE LAKES INFORMATION

Entrance Gates

Unit owners may purchase additional swipe cards at a cost of $15.00 by check only and are available from our Property Manager, Karl Forsman.

Pool Umbrellas

All pools have umbrellas on the decks. If you are the last to leave the pool area, please be responsible and lower any umbrellas that are open. Thank you.

Defibrillator

An Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED) is installed at the cabana at the Recreation area restroom.

Central Car Washing Area

There is an area located near the recreation area washroom facility for residents to wash cars.

It is mandatory for boats to be washed only in this area. Boat rinsing should be limited to 15 minutes after it has been in saltwater.

Your Pets

Please report any violations of the pet rules that you witness or observe to our Property Manager Karl Forsman (353-2465) so that proper action can be taken against offenders.

And also, please remember pets are a privilege, not a right. Many people have a fear of dogs so please be considerate of others when walking your pets.

Reminder!!! And also –Please do not feed the wild animals including feral cats, squirrels and ducks! They are creatures of the wild and should fend for themselves. After Association meetings at the Pools or gatherings at the Picnic area, any garbage should be removed and placed in a dumpster nearby. The raccoons leave quite a mess scattering the garbage!

Another issue regarding our beautiful grounds, they are for all to enjoy so please do not pick the flowers as everyone enjoys them when walking in the community.

Garden Waste

Plant debris should be piled or bagged and placed along the street, not at the dumpsters or parking lots, for pick up by the landscaping company Tuesday and Friday.

You are urged to please help the environment by recycling whenever possible. Newspaper, flyers, flattened small cardboard boxes, catalogs, magazines, telephone books, paper grocery bags, clear, green and brown bottles and jars, aluminum and steel/tin food and beverage cans, all plastics #1 through #7 can all be places in the recycle bins.

Please, please, do not put garbage into the re-cycling bins!!!!

Before placing large cardboard boxes in the garbage bins, please break them down to ensure that the dumpsters are not filled before the garbage truck arrives. Small boxes should be collapsed and placed in the recycling containers.

If you have large items such as water heaters, stoves, furniture etc, please contact Karl at 353-2465. Karl will contact Waste Management for a pick-up time. There is a $30 surcharge for special pickup.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ARTICLES BESIDE THE DUMPSTERS!!

For hazardous wastes such as paint, oil or solvents, they may be taken to the Waste Disposal site at 2640 Enterprise Avenue West with no fee. They are open Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or watch the Naples News.
