KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM WGC ORLANDO

"Role of Wi-Fi/unlicensed with 5G is all about coverage, quality, speed and meeting the demands of customers. AT&T is committed to next generation networks including Passpoint/HS2.0 and 5G". AT&T

"Orlando's theme parks and pleasure experience is underpinned by technology, making Orlando a key technology hub ? from reducing queue times for guests to optimising revenues for the parks ? it is the wireless technology that is enabling this. In 2016 at Super Bowl 50, American soccer fans consumed 10TB of wireless data ? today at peak times - this happens at Universal on a daily basis!" Universal Parks & Resorts

70% of Wi-Fi traffic in airports in the US is PasspointTM this Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) technology is what makes the Wi-Fi experience seamless, secure and interoperable and therefore

akin to the cellular experience and Passpoint is delivering on its promises. The challenge is out for more European and Asian

operators to follow suit and raise the bar for end customers.

8bn devices today connect with Wi-Fi, by 2021 that will be 11.68bn. 11 Exabytes of mobile data (60%) is offloaded to Wi-Fi today and this will grow to 49 Exabytes by 2021 ? ergo connectivity = Wi-Fi. We are now in the era of machine learning and AI ? cognitive Wi-Fi powered by the cloud has major impact on the user experience, as problems are recognised and fixed.

Many of the use cases of 5G can be delivered by Wi-Fi and other unlicensed technologies and furthermore Wi-Fi has demonstrable advantages - ubiquitous presence, significantly lower cost, unmetered access generally for the end user and a much lower operational and capex cost for enterprises. The 5G vision for operators makes sense with Wi-Fi as part of the 5G mix based on significant step change brought about by 802.11.ax.

The nexus of technologies are driving a perfect storm that will create the next industrial revolution ? but the intelligent digital fabric we are creating must be secure. The emergence of the smart home based on `enchanted objects' (aka IoT) will overlay not only the digital but also the physical too ? personalisation will be key.
