Ladies Luncheons

Our January luncheon at the Bonefish Grill was a huge success with a total of 131 lunches served. That is close to the maximum number of guests that can be served in the dining room. The Bonefish was wonderful with delicious food, more than ample servings and a great wait staff. We had so many compliments on the selection and some even considered it the “best luncheon” yet. We hope you plan on joining us each month during season. Some luncheons have been limited to a much smaller number so we ask that you get your paid reservation in early. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Watermark Grille has been a favorite Naples restaurant for many years and they are well known for the quality of their food and the excellent service. Bake Sale

Just a reminder that our Annual Bake Sale will be held on Saturday, March 4th. The sale is held at the Pool 3 Pavilion beginning at 11:00 a.m. (Please note the date and time). We look forward to receiving a large variety of “goodies” to tantalize our shoppers and we will accept the baked donations at the pavilion beginning at 9:30 a.m. We can always use more sugar free and gluten free treats. You may also call to drop off items the day prior or we will be happy to pick up the food products from you. This is one of our largest fund raisers and all of the monies collected go to purchasing needed equipment that will further enhance our recreation area and amenities. Please mark the date on your calendar and stop by to see us. Connie Fullerton 353-3946

Note: There will be a Logo Sale taking place at the Bake Sale.

Where the Money Goes

You may be wondering where the money goes from bocce fees, bake sales, Logo sales, 50/50 raffles, Chili Fiesta, picnics, etc. The Activities Team takes in the money for events and much of it pays for the supplies to hold these activities. This year our major expenditures from any profits are as follows: BBQ grill $425; bocce maintenance and supplies $1,700; chairs for horseshoe area $350; benches for tennis courts $2,800; tables for picnic area $1,600; website $450; monthly newsletter $250/mo. We have other miscellaneous expenses each month also. We very much appreciate the support at our events which makes it possible to improve our community.

On another note, we would like to thank all who help with the clean up after our events….many hands make less work! Don’t hesitate to volunteer!!!

ACTIVITIES

Horseshoes

We started the year off with some skepticism as to whether we would have enough players to make 4 teams but again it all came together and there are 4 teams this year. Tournament play began on January 24th and after 2 days of play the standings are almost even. We will have had our lunch at Beef O Brady's by the time this newsletter comes out. Tournament play will continue till March 2nd.  Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are open play. Anybody is welcome to come out and enjoy themselves. Ren Job 239-455-1103

Aquabics

Aquabics are held Monday to Saturday at both Pool #1 and Pool #2. Pool #1 begins at

9:00 a.m. and Pool #2 at 9:15 a.m. Classes are 45 minutes and everyone is welcome.

Bocce League

The bocce season began on Monday, January 16th with four divisions and a total of 32 teams. There are lots of new players this season and competition is in full swing with spectators at all of the games…..even in the wind and rain! We thank our substitutes who are always anxious to play and especially thank them when it is a “last minute” request.

And once again, a special thank you to Walter Kratz for his continuing dedication to the development of the schedules.

Again this season the courts are being groomed daily by a team of volunteers. This is done Monday to Friday and courts must not be used after 11:30 a.m. until thirty minutes before the 2:00 p.m. games. Please respect this request. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped prepare the courts in early January. Great job!

Once again we have a great group of dedicated referees! Please continue to show your support and thanks to them.

Captains are reminded to contact the Committee Chairman, Keith Fogel, as soon as possible if a player will be unavailable for a game. A substitute player will be selected from our list of substitute players.

We have unusual circumstances this season with our substitutes.  Because of many unexpected changes we are now with very, very few subs!  Because of this situation we will be adopting a system which will use Team Captains as subs.  No captain will be allowed to sub within their own division.  This will only be implemented when no sub is available.  If you, or someone you know, would be interested in playing bocce this season as a substitute, please call Keith at 239-353-8369.

Captains, please ensure the umbrellas are closed after the 4 o’clock game.

Each team is responsible for taking any team photographs to have as a keepsake. There is always someone at the court who would be happy to take a picture for you.

A sign-up sheet is on the Bocce Bulletin Board and anyone wishing to play in the Gender Game on Wednesday, March 22nd may sign to be eligible for the draw. Anyone who has played on a winning team in the past two years is not eligible. (Names are posted on the sign-up sheet.)

Copies of the schedules for all four (4) divisions may be requested by e-mailing jamorrison62@ with “schedules” in the subject line.

The play-off day will be Wednesday, March 8th (rain date March 9th or 10th) and the Super Bocce Game will be Wednesday, March 15th (rain date March 16th or 17th).

Please note there will be no changes to rain dates required for play-offs.

The Annual Hot Dog Day will take place on Wednesday, March 22rd (rain date 23th or 24th) followed by the Gender Game, for the enjoyment of all of Sapphire Lakes.

Please mark these dates on your calendars! Good luck to all the teams and another great season!

Mah Jongg

Newcomers always feel welcome and with coaching become enthusiastic participants with some even winning a mah jongg on their first day! It is advised to start with Cantonese Mah Jongg on Mondays, as it is similar to the card game Gin Rummy, but played with Chinese Tiles and is a great introduction to American Mah Jongg.

Cantonese Mah Jongg:  Monday, Pool #3 from noon to 2:00 except on the second Monday of the month, it is played at Pool #4.

American Mah Jongg:  Wednesday, Pool #3 from noon to 2:00 p.m.

President’s Corner

As we begin the month of February I thought I would communicate with our residents about a few of the issues that were taken up and discussed at the January Master Board Meeting. One of the major concerns that has been voiced around the community lately has been the lack of progress by Comcast on the installation of our new Fiber Optics. We had been told that the “build out” of the new fiber was going to begin in December, but as of this writing, that work hasn’t started. While we are disappointed that this work hasn’t begun, we are still confident that this new 10 year contract and the bulk Video and Internet services that it provides is a very good deal for our community. Therefore, we are trying to be patient with Comcast as we try to work with them to get the “build out” under way. As a result of this delay, we probably will not be going online with the new X1 Platform equipment or the bulk Internet service until later this year rather than May as we had hoped. We had budgeted 8 months of Internet service ($30 per unit for 590 units per month) in the current 2017 Master Budget, but if we don’t receive 8 months of bulk Internet service this year, those funds will stay in that line item of the budget and will be rolled over into the 2018 Master Budget. I will keep everyone informed about the status of the “build out” as we receive updated information.

Another item that may be of interest to you that was voted at the last Master Board meeting was the awarding of a service contract to Alligator Pools to maintain our four pools. Many of you came to know Frank, our long time pool maintenance man who was provided by our management company, Resort Management. Frank decided to retire last October and Resort Management hired a local pool service company, Gulfshore Pools, to maintain the pools three times a week. The Master Board decided to get other bids in January and to contract the service on our own. Alligator Pools has agreed to provide all of the pool chemicals in their bid of $1800 per month to service the pools three times a week, and we estimate that we can save over $10,000 annually by going this route. We had been spending $12,000 per year to purchase pool chemicals alone for Frank to use.

There will not be a monthly Master Board meeting in February as most of the Associations are having their Annual Meetings and there really isn’t anything pressing to be discussed or voted by the Master Board. The Annual Meeting of the Master Board will be held on Wednesday, March 1st at 6:30 pm at the Pool 3 Cabana, and all unit owners should be receiving written notice of that meeting in the mail in the next few weeks. I encourage you to attend, and if you are interested in staying for our “social” afterward, please bring an appetizer to share and your own beverage of choice.

In closing, I sincerely hope that you all have a great month of February while you’re here in our paradise. Bob Foster, President

Treasurer’s Report

As we close the books on 2016 and start a New Year 2017 we have good news. We ended the year with a surplus of $112,125 in operating funds. $88,500 is from the signing bonus with Comcast while $23,625 was from being under budget in 2016. That’s $2,348 more than estimated in our 2017 budget. The Comcast money will be put in a separate account and used as a contingency fund. The Board also decided to go with a service company for the 4 pools with the retiring of Frank our pool man. This will save us around $13,000. So bottom line, we will start the New Year with over $15,000 in surplus funds.

Regarding our Reserves, after returning $293,578 to the 15 associations as they take over responsibility of Carports, Garages and Driveways, we ended the year with $291,088. We earned $4,887 in interest on our reserve funds. That’s just under 1%. With the Fed starting to raise interest rates we are hopeful to do better in the future. We continue to work on moving money around to get the best interest we can through CD’s and Money Market accounts.

I will be giving a more detailed report at the Annual meeting on Wednesday, March 3, 2017. Thanks,

Reg (Mike) Mears, Treasurer

If you have large items such as water heaters, stoves, furniture etc, please contact Karl at 353-2465. Karl will contact Waste Management for a pick-up time. There is a $30 surcharge for special pickup.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ARTICLES BESIDE THE DUMPSTERS!!

Editor’s Comments

Some Valentine’s trivia – Did you know in the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve.” A very Happy Valentine’s Day to all!
