A Message from our Principals:

Welcome to a new school year! As we begin a new school year, we know there will be new opportunities for learning and growing together. As your principal and assistant principals, we look forward to working with you all as we face these opportunities and experience the wonderful magic that happens as we learn together.

This handbook contains policies, procedures, and information that will help you understand the school procedures and expectations. We hope you find this handbook useful and we ask that you sit down with your child and discuss the contents together.

We encourage you to join the P.T.A. and help us to be the best school in the county! The Ward team is just like any team—we grow and change in the complex, ever-changing world we live in. As with all teams, we expect to do the best and remain positive every day.

We want this to be a safe, happy, supportive, positive, and great school year for everyone at Ward! Please have you child prepared and ready to do their best. If you should ever have any concerns or suggestions, please let us know how we can be of service to you and your family. Thanks for your support!

Sincerely,

Wendy Johnson, Principal

Mission Statement:

Marvin M. Ward Elementary School will engage children through multidimensional activities to ensure that they become academically proficient students, responsible citizens, and continuous learners in an ever-changing world.

Vision Statement:

All children will succeed in an interactive learning environment.

What is Core Knowledge?

Core Knowledge is a solid, specific and shared curriculum, which helps children to established strong foundations of knowledge grade by grade. The Core Knowledge sequences are a detailed outline of specific content in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and the Fine Arts.

Students will study the basic principles of government, important events in world history, essential elements of mathematics and of oral and written expression, widely acknowledge masterpieces of art and music, and stories and poems passed down from generation to generation.

The Core Knowledge curriculum has been aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study at each grade level. This clear connection will provide the study and basic skills in conjunction with the enriched liberal arts knowledge base taught in thematic units.

What are the office hours at Ward?

Main Office 7:30 am – 4:30 pm

YMCA Program (morning) 7:00 am – 8:30 am

Breakfast Program 8:15 am – 8:30 am

Students report to class 8:30 am

Instructional day 8:45 am – 3:10 pm

YMCA Program (afternoon) 3:15 am – 6:00 pm

What time does school start and what time does it end?

Students must be in their classrooms no later than 8:45am. If a student arrives after 8:45, they must stop by the office and receive a “Tardy” slip so the student will not be counted absent for the day. Since instruction begins promptly at 8:45, excessive tardies will result in a letter from the principal. Students who arrive late miss important teacher instructions and disrupt the class. We want you and your classmates to have a good start each day. UNEXCUSED TARDIES will not grant perfect attendance.

Where do I go when I get to school in the morning?

Students are not allowed in the school building before 8:15 a.m. unless enrolled in the “YMCA” program. Students arriving between 8:15 - 8:30 a.m. should go to the cafeteria where they will remain until the 8:30 a.m. bell rings. Students arriving between 8:30 – 8:45 a.m. may report directly to their classroom.

Is there before and after school childcare at Ward?

The West Forsyth Family YMCA operates an on-site before and after school childcare program at Marvin Ward Elementary from 7:00am – 8:30am and 3:15pm-6:00pm. Parents may call the YMCA directly at 712-2000 to register or ask any question they may have about the program.

The YMCA after school care program will not operate at Ward when school is dismissed early due to bad weather conditions or when school is cancelled. Parents will need to make arrangements to pick up students enrolled in the YMCA when inclement weather occurs.

If school is cancelled for the entire day, there will be a child care program at the YMCA, from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. If the YMCA is closed due to severe weather, there will be no child care program. You may call the YMCA at 712-2000 for a recorded message.

Where do I go in the afternoon if I ride the bus home?

Bus riders will be dismissed from their classrooms. Each class should be packed and ready to load buses in the back parking lot when their bus is called. All students should walk directly to the bus, moving quickly and quietly through the hallway to their assigned bus.

How does a bus rider behave on the bus and while waiting for the bus?

Riding the bus is a privilege. Improper conduct on the bus will result in that privilege being denied.

Students who ride the bus need to:

▪ Always obey and respect the bus driver.

▪ Board and exit the bus in an orderly manner.

▪ Remain seated at all times until it is time to exit the bus.

▪ Talk quietly only to those students sitting nearby.

▪ Keep feet out of the aisles.

▪ Avoid eating food or chewing gum on the bus.

▪ Leave all soft drinks off the bus.

▪ Keep arms, hands, head, etc. inside the bus.

▪ Cross the road ONLY when the STOP sign is out and ONLY in FRONT of the bus.

▪ Students will be assigned seats on the bus. All students should remain seated in their assigned seat until the bus has stopped at their bus stop.

▪ The only adult authorized to ride a school bus is the driver. The principal must approve any exceptions.

▪ Any behavior which may distract the bus driver is to be avoided, i.e., fighting, loud talking, vulgarity, pushing, etc.

▪ There must be no defacing or damaging of school property.

▪ All pupils should remain away from main roads or highways and unauthorized private property while waiting for the buses.

What do I do if I need to ride a different bus home?

At the beginning of the year, parents will designate on the pupil information sheet whether or not the students will regularly ride a bus, or ride in a car. During the year, the student will be expected to use that designated method of transportation unless written notification is received of a change. Students may ride only the bus to which they are assigned, unless a change is authorized by the principal or assistant principals. Normally, students use the same method of leaving school – either in a car or on the bus. If you need to change the way your child goes home, you must write a note to the teacher stating what changes are needed. The office must approve any changes. If a note is not received, the student will be required to leave school in the usual way. Please anticipate and plan for these changes so the required note can be sent to the teacher. Telephone calls to the office will not be accepted for changes in transportation. In addition, the office has no way of confirming the caller’s identity. Your child’s safety is our foremost concern.

Where do I go in the afternoon if I am a car rider?

Car-riders will be dismissed at 3:10pm each afternoon to come to Commons A. All students should sit quietly and wait for their name to be called. When their name is called, the student should walk quickly and quietly out the front entrance to the car loading area. Please remain in your car and use the front circle to pick up children at dismissal. Staff members and safety patrols will monitor students as they watch for you.

Parents and/or guardians must have the car-rider sign displayed in the car window. If this sign is not displayed, the parent and/or guardian will be asked to come into the school and sign-out their child. Only those adults listed on the emergency information sheet, kept in the office, will be allowed to sign a child out of school. Please bring in a picture id in order that we may identify you as being an adult allowed to leave with a particular child.

Our school day ends at 3:10pm, please be prompt when picking up your child. Teachers normally end their day by 3:45pm. After 3:45pm, no one will be available to supervise children. If you need after-school care, please call the YMCA at 721-200 or any other after-school program you choose.

What if I have a brother or sister at Clemmons Middle School?

Middle school students are not permitted in our school, or on our campus, without parental supervision. Please do not ask your middle school student to remain at Ward after middle school dismissal.

What happens if I need to leave school early?

Any student who needs to leave school early must be signed-out in the office by

a parent, guardian, or parent-designated adult. If a child has a doctor’s

appointment during the day, the parent must be sure to:

1. Write a note telling us about the scheduled appointment.

2. The child gives the note to the teacher.

3. The parent comes to the office to pick the student up. The office calls

the classroom when the parent arrives.

Remember…a student must be in attendance for half the day to be counted

present.

If someone other than the parent will pick up the child, please state the

person’s name in a note to your child’s teacher.

School Board Policy #6112 prohibits the early release of students from

school for private lessons, tutoring or other similar instruction.

What happens if school closes early due to weather conditions?

Announcements regarding school closings will be broadcast over radio and TV. Please

Watch WXII Cable Channel 11, WGHP Cable Channel 10, WFMY Cable Channel 9 and WS/FC School TV Cable Channel 2 for timely information regarding school system closings. If you do not see or hear an announcement about Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools closing, then school will operate as usual. If you normally bring your child to school in the morning, please make sure that school is in session before dropping off your child.

When the school system announces that school will close early due to weather conditions, the following guidelines apply at Ward Elementary:

Students will be dismissed at the announced closing times. School buses will be in operation as usual for you if you are eligible to ride the bus. Please have pre-arranged plans in advance in case your child gets to go home early because of weather conditions or other emergencies.

The YMCA After School Care Program will not operate at Ward when school is dismissed early due to bad weather conditions or when school is cancelled. Parents will need to make arrangements to pick up students enrolled in the YMCA when inclement weather occurs. Parents need to have transportation plans arranged to handle early dismissal situations. Please plan ahead so that in the event of bad weather, your child will know what to do and you will be able to inform the teacher.

Because the office has a high volume of calls, students will not be able to use

phones.

If school is cancelled for the entire day, there will be a child care program at the YMCA, from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. If the YMCA is closed due to severe weather, there will be no child care program. You may call the YMCA at 712-2000 for a recorded message.

How will the school know whom to contact in case there is an emergency?

You are required to have the following information on file at school:

• Name(s) or parent(s) or guardian(s).

• Up-To-Date address information.

• Home telephone and work telephone number(s) of parents/guardians. Cell telephone numbers are very helpful too!

• Emergency telephone numbers of a friend or relative in case your parents/guardians cannot be reached.

Can my parents visit Marvin Ward Elementary?

We welcome visitors to our school and are happy to have you with us whenever you can be a part of our school routine. Every visitor must report to the office before going to the classroom. All visitors and volunteers must wear a visitor’s badge issued in the office for security reasons.

Can one or both of my parents volunteer as Grade Parents?

We encourage parents to volunteer in their child’s classroom to assist the teacher with special class events and to contact parents for needed items, etc. Grade Parents must also be available to the Grade level Chairperson and Volunteer Coordinator for special school-wide and P.T.A. events such as screenings, teacher luncheons, teacher appreciation and end of year celebrations!

Will I eat lunch at school?

A balanced and nutritious lunch is served daily in the cafeteria, where, for a minimal fee, students may purchase a plate lunch and/or “a’ la Carte” items. In order to encourage sound nutrition, we discourage the purchase of more than one sweet dessert item per child; however, purchase of fruits and salads in addition to the plate lunch is unlimited.

There should be no charging of meals. (Board Policy #AR3542.1) The school system recognizes that students occasionally forget to bring their lunch or the money to purchase a meal. A student, in that case, may request a voucher from the teacher, enabling him/her to receive a vegetable (except french fries), two rolls, and a ½ pint of milk from the school cafeteria for 50 cents. A copy of the voucher will be sent home for reimbursement for the cost of the meal.

There are free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs for those who qualify.

Can I bring a lunch from home?

Please send your student with easy to open lunch items and plastic forks or spoons. Fruit cans and tough drink containers are difficult to open. Soft drinks are not allowed at school.

Can my parents eat lunch with me at school?

Parents are invited to join their child’s class for lunch at school. No prior arrangements need to be made, but we do request that you stop by the office to “sign-in” and get a

visitor’s badge. We do ask parents to wait in the school lobby to join the class at the scheduled time. If you choose to eat outside of the cafeteria, the child must be signed out, and back in, at the office. This is to ensure the safety of your child.

I will use my best manners in the cafeteria!

1. Walk to and from the cafeteria.

2. Get everything you need when going through the lunch line.

3. Use good table manners.

4. Talk quietly with only the people at your table.

5. Have friendly conversation.

6. Clean up.

What do I do if my family moves during the school year?

Parents should keep the school informed of changes in addresses and phone numbers. We often need to contact parents or guardians and need correct home and business numbers.

If you are moving within Zone 8, you can stay at Marvin Ward Elementary. Please notify the office two weeks in advance to get a new bus stop. If you are moving outside of Zone 8, you can stay at Marvin Ward the remainder of the school year, as long as you provide transportation. If you are moving outside of Forsyth County, please notify the office of the last date that you will be at school. Your new school will request your school records from us once you have registered.

Can I use the phone at school?

Students are beginning to take on more responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is to remember to bring all necessary items to school. Phone calls will be allowed in an emergency only. Students will not be allowed to call home for items they have forgotten. Parents are encouraged to make all arrangements for the school day before the student leaves home.

What if my parents need to talk with my teacher?

The bi-monthly Communication report represents a partial picture of what the school is attempting to do with each student. A visit to the school would help to further explain each student’s progress. We welcome conferences to help develop a good relationship between parent and teacher. You may request a conference at any time either on the communication form or by a phone call.

Conferences are generally scheduled between 7:40 – 8:10 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. If a conference is requested by the teacher on the Tuesday communication report, please contact the teacher no later than Wednesday of the same week to schedule a mutually convenient time for a conference. Parents are asked to make an appointment with the child’s teacher by sending a note by the child, or by contacting the office at 774-4676. If needed, transportation can be arranged through our Home/School Coordinator.

Phone calls to teachers are NOT permitted during instructional time. If you need to get in touch with your child’s teacher, office personnel will take a message and get it to the teacher in a timely manner.

When will I get my report card?

Grading periods usually average 45 school days. Report cards are issued at the end of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters. The final report card can be mailed if the parent places two (2) first-class stamps on the report card envelope at the end of the third grading period or by sending 2 stamps to their child’s teacher before the last day of school.

If you do not send postage for your child’s report card, parents may come by the school to pick them up.

Can I take medications at school?

A Public Health Nurse is available to us on a consultative basis. She coordinates the screening of our students’ vision and hearing.

Medication that is to be administered to a child at school must have a form HS10 on file (Parent Request Physicians Information Regarding the Administration of Medication in the School), and be in a prescription bottle that is labeled with the doctor’s name, child’s name, and directions. A new HS10 form must be filed in the office each year.

When an accident occurs, every effort will be made to contact a parent or guardian. The form entitled “Permission to Secure Medical Care” will be sent for parents to sign and provide information and permission to adequately care for the child in case of extreme emergencies. Please be sure to return this form with an emergency contact other than the parents.

Will I have homework?

The primary purpose for homework is to extend and strengthen classroom activities, and to teach responsibility. Students must practice responsibility by remembering books and notebooks they will need. Students should double check homework assignments before dismissal. Classrooms are locked after teachers leave. They will not be unlocked after that time, so students must remember all books needed for homework.

Parents are encouraged to help students with homework by providing a quiet, comfortable place and a regular time to do homework. Most assignments should be completed independently. Parents should serve as consultants.

We discourage parents from doing the assignments for the child and we also discourage parents from bringing forgotten homework during the day. We want to encourage children’s responsibility for their work.

Children in grades K-2 can expect 0-30 minutes daily, students in grades 3-4 should expect 30-45 minutes daily, and students in grade 5 should expect 45-75 minutes daily.

Will my class go on field trips this year?

Several field trips may be planned by your child’s teacher to supplement and enrich the instructional program. There will be a transportation fee, and in some cases an admission charge. You will be notified of the cost per pupil. Students are expected to ride the bus to and from school and participate with their class and teacher. Inability to pay will not prohibit any student from participating in a field trip. Please contact the school if your family needs assistance. After the due date for field trip money has passed, checks will not be accepted. Please understand that the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools charge a $25.00 fee on all returned checks.

A student suspended from school or assigned to in-school suspension on the day of a field trip shall not be allowed to participate on that field trip. If a student violates any WS/FCS student conduct policy or otherwise misbehaves while on a field trip, the student may be immediately suspended from the field trip and sent back to school or home as appropriate. If there is a safety concern due to a students’ discipline record, a parent may be asked to accompany their child on the field trip.

Will we have school pictures taken at Marvin Ward Elementary?

Individual pictures of all students will be taken in the fall and the spring. A group/class picture will also be taken of your entire class in the spring. We will send notices home to remind you of the dates for school pictures. SMILE !

Does Ward offer any co-curricular activities?

In addition to classroom activities, we offer a number of activities and programs in which students may be involved. These clubs and activities are for Marvin Ward students only.

Art Club

Book Club

Chess Club

Chorus

Garden and Environmental Club

Science Club

Science Fair

Student Service Club

Unicycle Club

What is the Student Service Club?

The Student Service Club may be a child’s first experience working with their peers to make decisions on activities for the entire school. Two student representatives are chosen from each classroom in grades one – five. These students meet at least once a month to plan school-wide activities, such as Samaritan Ministries Penny Campaign and tray favors for the Red Cross among others. We are pleased to announce that our club is now an official Rotary Interaction Club with the Rotary Club of Clemmons.

Who are these students I see in the hallways with badges?

Safety Patrol members are chosen from the fifth grade classes. They help with monitoring the students’ behavior in the gym/cafeteria as students arrive at school. They also assist in student safety and behaviors as the children go to and from the busses, and their classrooms.

What should I wear to school?

Students should wear clean, neat, and comfortable clothing. Tennis shoes or rubber sole shoes are requested for PE classes. HATS are not appropriate in the building. Tank tops, flip flops, open back or open toed shoes, short shorts (not shorter than the tips of fingers when arms are at the sides of the body), or any other type of dress that is unusual or inappropriate should not be worn at school, (i.e., alcohol/tobacco/weapon designs are not allowed). If a student’s dress is detrimental to his/her health or safety, or deemed inappropriate for learning conditions, the parents may be requested to remedy the situation.

Please do not allow your child to wear “Heelie” shoes to school. Our custodians work hard on the floors throughout the building. The wheels that are on these shoes damage the floors and cause more work for our custodians.

What happens if I lose something at school?

Students are responsible for loss or damage that they incur on school property. Textbooks, library books and other materials used by students are expensive to replace. It is extremely important that every effort be made by parents and teachers to encourage proper care and prompt return of all school property. Students will be charged for any items that they have lost.

The school is not responsible for lost personal property items. Please label all students’ personal property: sweaters, coats, lunch boxes, book bags, etc., with their name.

Can I bring my cell phone or my IPod to school?

School Board Policy prohibits students from bringing IPods, beepers, electronic games, cassette recorders, radios, etc. to school without permission of school personnel. These items will be taken and held for the parents to retrieve. Cell phones may be brought to school but must be turned off throughout the school day. The school is not responsible for any items lost at school.

Can I sell things at school?

Students may not sell anything at school.

How should I behave while at school?

At Ward we believe that all students can, and should, behave appropriately while they are on school property. We will not tolerate student behavior that hinders the teaching and learning process. Therefore, we clearly define both school-wide expectations and individual classroom rules.

We are aware of the basic responsibility and influence of the home to teach manners and appropriate behavior. We ask parents to read and discuss with their children the following school-wide and classroom rules. We will also keep parents informed and involved in finding solutions to problems that may occur.

At Ward we will recognize an individual student’s improvement and attainment of academic achievement, cooperation with teachers and peers, and effort in establishing good work habits and behavior.

School Rules…

1. Show respect to yourself, others and your surroundings.

2. Exercise self-control.

3. Be on time and prepared for school.

Positive Behavior Support (PBS)

School-Wide Discipline Plan

Dear Families,

The children and teachers at Ward Elementary are learning how to use FISH! behavior to focus on learning. Please read the Ward FISH! expectations with your child. Your support and reminders will help your child be a Super FISH! Student at Ward Elementary.

Thank you,

Positive Behavior Support Team

[pic]What is Positive Behavior Support (PBS)?

Our goal at Ward Elementary is to help each child develop self-discipline. Together the home and school share the responsibility for developing good citizens. Parents, teachers, and students must work together to maintain a safe learning environment. The PBS (Positive Behavior Support) program is based upon our philosophy of recognizing positive contributions of students.

PBS means that teachers, administrators, counselors, and support staff are going to take responsibility to TEACH positive behavior expectations to students.

PBS means that students will know exactly what is expected of them. Students who take responsibility to behave positively will be recognized and rewarded in a variety of ways. Students will also know exactly what consequences will result when they choose NOT to meet the school-wide expectations (“all of us will be on the same page”).

[pic]School-Wide PBS at Ward Elementary

Definition: School-wide PBS at Ward Elementary is defined as the use of positive proactive strategies with children to make their school environment consistent and conducive to learning.

Purpose: To create consistency by using positive interaction within a learning environment to promote success. To create a safe, caring learning environment where all children can work hard, learn a lot, and have fun.

We accomplish this by following our FISH school core principles:

Friendship

Integrity

Safety

Hardworking

[pic]Student Responsibilities and Behavior Standards

In developing self-responsibility, we aim to give students the following:

• a clear understanding of what is expected of them

• specific feedback when behavior is and is not appropriate

• an opportunity to apply problem solving skills and correct an unwise choice related to a

specific situation

• a clear understanding of the consequences of a given choice

[pic]Student Rewards for Appropriate Behavior – Tickets and Gems

All staff members will recognize students who demonstrate friendship, integrity, safe behavior and wok hard. Small weekly, monthly and quarterly awards will be randomly presented to individual students in each grade who earned a FISH ticket or GEM.

[pic]Student Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior

1. Warning

A verbal notice will be given to students indicating a violation of school expectations and/or responsibilities has occurred. Students will be given the opportunity to correct the behavior before further action is taken.

2. Minor Behavior Incident

An individual conference between a student and staff member will be held to make the student aware of his/her poor judgment regarding a particular incident. This will provide the opportunity for discussing possible alternatives available for the student to correct the problem.

3. Referral to Principal

Major Infractions and Persistent Minor Infractions will result in a referral to a principal. Major Infractions are behaviors which affect the safety of students and others. The principal will investigate the incidents and determine appropriate action to resolve the issue.

[pic]FISH! - At Home!

PBS can easily be adapted for use at home. Children thrive in a setting where an adult is in charge and expectations are clear and consistent.

To use FISH! at home, you can adapt the FISH! expectations we use at school.

• Teach Your Expectations

• Model Them

• Practice Them

• Review Them Often

After your expectations have been taught, use simple, straightforward language to acknowledge appropriate behavior and when inappropriate behavior is seen--model, practice, and review your expectations.

What is the Listener Program?

The Listener Program is a special mentoring opportunity for students to have a positive adult role model to spend time together each week. Listeners do not give advice or judge them. They are not tutors or counselors. Their objective is to have fun and listen to students.

All students could benefit from having a Listener—one more person who is rooting for them to be the best they can be. Unfortunately, we are limited to the amount of parent,

teacher, and community volunteers we are able to attract and train. Listeners must commit to spending 20-30 minutes every week with their child.

Students are referred to the school counselors for having a Listener. The student’s parent must give permission for his/her child to participate in the program. Then, it is on a first-come/first-served basis for matching students with adult volunteers.

Marvin Ward PTA

The Marvin Ward Elementary Parent Teacher Association (PTA) would like to welcome you to Ward Elementary! We have been working hard to make this another great school year and are excited that you will be a part of it!

The PTA exists to promote the education and welfare of every child through a joint effort with school and home. It is our goal for every child to be a successful student and for every voice to be heard.

Ward Elementary PTA is your PTA. We are here to serve parents, teachers, and children in every way we can. We need your support to achieve all of our goals this year. You can help by joining the PTA! There are many opportunities available in the PTA - serving on a committee, attending board meetings and/or volunteering at the school. We have options for everyone at various levels of participation. Giving of your time, talent, and ability helps the school and enriches our children’s education.

We look forward to your ideas and support for this school year! Please do not hesitate to call or email us with your questions, comments, or ideas!
