+ CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION + LSB 151

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination in light of the Ten Commandments.)

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith. LSB 292

C Amen.

P Do you believe that my forgiveness is God’s forgiveness?

C Yes. LSB 293

P Let it be done for you as you believe.

P Almighty God in His LSB 151

mercy has given His Son to

die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the ( Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

+ SERVICE OF THE WORD + LSB 152

Introit Ps. 37:5-7; antiphon: Ps.37:4

P Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

C Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will act.

P He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

C Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

P C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

P Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Salutation and Collect of the Day LSB 156

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Let us pray. Almighty God, Your Son willingly endured the agony and shame of the cross for our redemption. Grant us courage to take up our cross daily and follow Him wherever He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 15:15-21

15 Lord, you understand; remember me and care for me. Avenge me on my persecutors. You are long-suffering—do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake. 16 When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, Lord God Almighty. 17 I never sat in the company of revelers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand was on me and you had filled me with indignation. 18 Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable? You are to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails. 19 Therefore this is what the Lord says: “If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them. 20 I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you,” declares the Lord. 21 “I will save you from the hands of the wicked and deliver you from the grasp of the cruel.”

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Psalm (is read responsively)

Psalm 26 (A prayer in the hope of God.)

A O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.

A Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.

C Prove me, O Lord, and try me;

test my heart and my mind.

A For Your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in Your faithfulness.

C I do not sit with men of falsehood, nor do I consort with hypocrites.

A I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked.

C I wash my hands in innocence and go around Your altar, O Lord,

A Proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all Your wondrous deeds.

C O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.

A Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with blood-thirsty men,

C In whose hands are evil devices, and whose right hands are full of bribes.

A But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity; redeem me, and be gracious to me.

C My foot stands on level ground; in the great assembly I will bless the Lord.

A C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

A O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.

Epistle Reading Romans 12:9-21

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Matthew 16:21-28

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteenth chapter.

[pic]

21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”

23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Sermon “As If” Pastor Tom Rhodes

Stand

Apostles’ Creed LSB 159

P C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life ( everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church LSB 159

P Let us with all patience be constant in prayer for the whole Church and for all people in all their needs.

P Almighty God, You have invited and enabled us to be constant in prayer, especially in times of trial and trouble.  Hear our prayers for Your whole Church, that her voice of prayer be unceasing as the earth rolls into each new day of Your mercy.  Fill us with the hope of Your love and give us the strength of faith to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow our Savior, Jesus.  Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P By the cross of Christ You, O God, have not left those bearing Your name alone in their suffering.  Hear the cries especially of those who suffer reproach and persecution for confessing Your Word.  Frustrate the intentions of those who would silence Your Word that all Your people may continue to sing Your praises.  Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Lord God, You establish the leaders of nations.  Grant that Your truth guide especially the leaders of our nation and community in the ways of integrity and honesty, avoiding hypocrisy and falsehood, that true liberty and peace may prevail among us.  Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Merciful God, You create every form of worthy vocation and task of labor.  Bless with wisdom and uprightness all who work for the common good as they carry out their responsibilities.  Protect those whose jobs put them in harm's way, and bless all those who bring healing and hope to people in need.  Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Hear the prayers of all those enduring physical, spiritual, and emotional trials especially those on our prayer list and cards, grant them patience that, committing their ways to You, they may be delivered from illness and tribulation and live in hope.  Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Heavenly Father, in the stillness of faith we wait patiently for You, entrusting all for whom we pray to Your steadfast love and mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C Amen.
