Old Norse ReligionOld Norse religion developed from early Germanic religion during the Proto-Norse period, when the North Germanic peoples separated into a distinct branch of the Germanic peoples. It was displaced by Christianization of the North Germanic peoples. Scholars reconstruct aspects of North Germanic religion by historical linguistics, archaeology, toponymy, and records left by North Germanic peoples, such as runic inscriptions in the Younger Futhark, a distinctly North Germanic extension of the runic alphabet. Numerous Old Norse works dated to the 13th century record Norse mythology, a component of North Germanic religion.Old Norse religion was polytheistic, entailing a belief in various gods and goddesses. Norse mythology divided these deities into two groups, the ?sir and the Vanir, who engaged in an ancient war until realising that they were equally powerful. Among the most widespread deities were the gods O?inn and Thor. This world was inhabited also by various other mythological races, including giants, dwarfs, elves, and land-spirits. Norse cosmology revolved around a world tree known as Yggdrasil, with various realms existing alongside that of humans, named Midgard. These include multiple afterlife realms, several of which are controlled by a particular deity.()Proto-Norse (also called Proto-Scandinavian, Primitive Norse, Proto-Nordic, Ancient Nordic, Ancient Scandinavian, Old Nordic, Old Scandinavian, Proto-North Germanic, North Proto-Germanic or Common Scandinavian) was an Indo-European language spoken in Scandinavia that is thought to have evolved as a northern dialect of Proto-Germanic in the first centuries CE. It is the earliest stage of a characteristically North Germanic language, and the language attested in the oldest Scandinavian Elder Futhark inscriptions, spoken from around the 2nd to the 8th centuries CE (corresponding to the late Roman Iron Age and the Germanic Iron Age). It evolved into the dialects of Old Norse at the beginning of the Viking Age in about 800, which later themselves evolved into modern North Germanic languages.()The V?lsunga sagaSigurd (Old Norse: Sigur?r) is a legendary hero of Norse mythology, as well as the central character in the V?lsunga saga. The earliest extant representations for his legend come in pictorial form from seven runestones in Sweden and most notably the Ramsund carving (c. 1000) and the G?k Runestone (11th century).Fafnir murders Hreidmar and takes all of the gold, denying Regin his rightful share. Sigurd agrees to avenge Regin and Hreidmar by killing Fafnir, who has been turned into a dragon by the curse on Andvari's ring. To kill Fafnir, Regin advises Sigurd to dig a pit, wait for Fafnir to walk over it, and then stab the dragon once he has fallen into the pit. After defeating Fafnir, Sigurd meets Brynhildr, a "shieldmaiden." She pledges herself to him but also prophesies his doom and marriage to another. (In V?lsunga saga, it is not clear whether or not Brynhild is a Valkyrie or in any way supernatural.)Sigurd and Brynhild produce a daughter, Aslaug, who marries Ragnar Lodbrok.()Ragnar LodbrokRagnar Lodbrok or Lothbrok (Old Norse: Ragnarr Lo?brók, "Ragnar Shaggy-Breeches") was a legendary Danish and Swedish Viking hero and ruler, known from Viking Age Old Norse poetry and sagas. According to that traditional literature, Ragnar distinguished himself by many raids against Francia and Anglo-Saxon England during the 9th century.According to the Tale of Ragnar Lodbrok, Ragnar was the son of the Swedish king Sigurd Hring. The Tale of Ragnar's Sons tells that the Great Heathen Army that invaded England in 865 was led by the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok, to wreak revenge against King ?lla of Northumbria who had supposedly captured and executed Ragnar.()My Thoughts:The V?lsunga saga and the legend of Ragnar Lodbrok is a large part in the ‘Vikings’ TV show, on the history channel. ‘Ragnar Lodbrok’ is the main character in the show, until his death, but the fact that he existed makes, the history’s channels research even more exceptional. ‘Ragnar’, is like ‘Robin Hood’, or ‘William Wallace’, a legend of a culture. They most likely existed, but may not have done all the things, they have been said to have done. For example, ‘Ragnar’ could not have done all the things he did in the TV show as the time period was all wrong. He would have still been fighting at the age of 80 or so which is absurd. However, there may have been many ‘Ragnar Lodbrok’s’, and all their adventures and raids, may have been recorded as one man. The V?lsunga saga, is not a big part of the ‘Vikings’ TV show, but it is mentioned. The Character ‘Aslaug’, who is the wife of ‘Ragnar’, in the show, is the daughter to Sigurd and Brynhild, and are mentioned in the show a lot. This is because, her only claim to fame is that her father, killed a dragon. I love the idea, of lots of the show being close to reality or an old legend. It makes the show seem more real, compared to something like Game of Thrones which, is fantasy fiction. It’s hard to relate to the show GOT, because its not real, whereas ‘Vikings’ is a bit of our history, in fact it is a bit of my personal history. The research that has gone into the show is immense and very impressive. It is very inspiring for me, for my research techniques.Vikings (2013 TV series)left2461260(Fig 1. [PDF] Vikings TV Show) 00(Fig 1. [PDF] Vikings TV Show) left65278000Vikings is a historical drama television series written and created by Michael Hirst for the History channel. Filmed in Ireland, it premiered on March 3, 2013 in Canada. Vikings is inspired by the sagas of Danish/Swedish Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best-known legendary Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of England and France. The show portrays Ragnar as a farmer who rises to fame by successful raids into England, and eventually becomes a Scandinavian king, with the support of his family and fellow warriors. After Ragnar's death the later seasons follow the fortunes of his sons, and their adventures in England, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean.Premise:The series is inspired by the tales of the Norsemen of early medieval Scandinavia. It broadly follows the exploits of the legendary Viking chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok and his crew, family and descendants, as notably laid down in the 13th-century sagas Ragnars saga Lo?brókar and Ragnarssona ?áttr, as well as in Saxo Grammaticus's 12th-century work Gesta Danorum. Norse legendary sagas were partially fictional tales based in the Norse oral tradition, written down about 200 to 400 years after the events they describe. Further inspiration is taken from historical sources of the period, such as records of the Viking raid on Lindisfarne depicted in the second episode, or Ahmad ibn Fadlan's 10th-century account of the Volga Vikings. The series begins at the start of the Viking Age, marked by the Lindisfarne raid in 793.Historical accuracy:Some critics have pointed out historical inaccuracies in the series’ depiction of Viking society. Lars Walker, in the magazine The American Spectator, criticized its portrayal of early Viking Age government (represented by Earl Haraldson) as autocratic rather than essentially democratic. Joel Robert Thompson criticized depiction of the Scandinavians' supposed ignorance of the existence of Britain and Ireland, and of the death penalty rather than outlawry (skoggangr) as their most serious punishment. My Thoughts:I don’t agree, with the statements above, that the critics believe it to be historically inaccurate. Also, I don’t really matter as much for a tv show, especially a drama, as it’s not a documentary, its about showing emotion and a story that people can relate to. the description of their lack of democracy, with Earl Haraldson in the first story, might not be accurate, but it makes the Earl look mean and unkind. This is what the show is trying to portray the character as to the audience, and it works. He is the bad guy, and it makes the story flow more. The show isn’t trying to present exactly what history would have looked like, because that’s impossible, as there is not enough information on the history of the Vikings. They can only go on what they can find, record wise, pictures, old texts and legends. left2288540(Fig 2. [PDF] Vikings TV Show on History) 00(Fig 2. [PDF] Vikings TV Show on History) 0381000My Thoughts:The show in my opinion, is one of the best things on tv at the moment. It draws you in with amazing historical tales from our history. It portrays many big historical figures in the Viking world. The shows production itself, is very impressive. Even from the first series, the History channel seemed to have enough money to make the show exciting, in action scenes, such as battles. The sets, such as villages, and forts are also very impressive, for the budget. Nowadays, the show is very popular, so the battles and sets get even bigger. One thing I like is that the actors seem to stay the same. They don’t usually get lots of big popular actors, but instead make their current actors famous, through the show. History is a big interest to me, especially this time period in history. The music also is a big part of the enjoyment of the show, to me. I enjoy a good soundtrack, especially one that uses the original sounds of the culture, using old singing techniques and old instruments as well, like harps and flutes. Overall, it is a big influence to my project, I wish to look at how they gain such a knowledge of the Viking world, to reference in their show. ................
