We will be reading and responding to?poetry, narratives, informational, and argumentative texts. By examining these exemplary texts, you will build your vocabulary and reading skills to be able to communicate your ideas effectively. Discussion, both speaking and listening, as well as working in collaboration with others will play a large role in class and will help to prepare you for the upcoming classes at NLC.? I look forward to spending the year learning together. You will have assignments in this class, just as you would any other. You will also have support for this class as well as your English classes.??Class TextsVarious Texts and excerpts depending on the skills covered1st 9 weeks – We will study a variety of texts including short stories, poems, articles and excerpts to identify the main ideas and themes.? We will discuss and analyze the author’s purpose as well as different points of view. We will focus on vocabulary and literary devices used by different authors to convey their ideas.? We will summarize and evaluate different types of text and express our opinions about them in discussions and written evaluations.2nd 9 weeks— We will examine a variety of expository texts and create summaries, questions, charts, graphics and visuals as we examine each of the texts. We will focus on vocabulary and language techniques used by authors?to establish their purpose and points of views. We will investigate sources and credibility of the texts to formulate our own opinions on a variety of issues based on the texts we read4295775635000GradingDaily work/presentations/quizzes= 60%Tests / exams/ projects = 40% Late Work All assignments need to be turned in on time. Projects and Essays will be accepted up to TWO DAYS late, if submitted personally to the teacher with the following DEDUCTIONS on the project’s/essay’s final grade:First day late (turned in on due date at any time after the class period has ended) – 10 pointsSecond day late (due at 8 AM the very next school day after the due date) – 20 pointsThird day late (two school days after the due date) – Grade recorded as a ZEROIf sufficient time is given in class to complete projects or essays, this clause does not apply. Projects cannot be redone for a higher gradeTutoringAnyone scoring less than 70 on any tests, exams or projects has to re-do it. The student has to sign up for tutoring and retake the exam or re-do the project to receive a grade no greater than a 70 (district policy). Tutoring is available by arrangement with me.? The student needs to email me letting me know the reason, and areas of improvement. The student also needs to sign up for tutoring in the class tutoring log and report to the commons at 4:00 pm. Tutoring will end at 5:00 pm. Student must have a ride secured by 5:00 pm or will be asked to report to NLC for pickup.Make up Work ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?It is the student’s responsibility to coordinate with the teacher and get any missed work. Students must meet with me the day of their return; and make arrangements to complete and submit the work within the established deadlines. After the established deadline has passed, any remaining missing work will be assigned a grade of zero. If a student is absent more than three consecutive days, parents may request the work from the front office before 10:00 a.m. and pick up the work after 3:30 p.m. the same day. Gum chewing is a privilege in this class and will be taken away if gum is not disposed of properly or if chewing disturbs others. Phones and electronic devices should be kept in backpacks at all times. The unauthorized use of electronic devices will result in a $15.00 fee. Electronic devices are only returned to a parent or guardian. Chromebooks: Students must bring their Chromebook to class daily charged and ready to be used. Exiting Class:? In the last five minutes of class, you will wrap up what you are working on, return materials to the appropriate locations, and clean up your table and upon completion of these tasks, the teacher, not the bell, will dismiss you. ................
