Book Groups Assignment: Honors Sophomore EnglishDuring second semester students will participate in book groups. As both of our 2nd semester whole class works involve justice (and we have just concluded our Trials Project), I have decided that our 2nd semester book group will place an emphasis on stories revolving around justice, though in different ways. Requirements: Read the first section of your book by Thursday, February 6th. Be prepared to discuss.Finish reading your book before Thursday, February 27th. We will have an 18 question multiple choice test on the book during class that day, followed by student-led discussions on each book. Expect test questions that are specific. Knowing character names is often vital to success on comprehension tests. Take notes if your book has many characters or difficult plete the notes sheet in time for the discussion on 2/27. Make sure your notes provide a meaningful and on-topic way to discuss the book. TitlesNotesChronicle of a Death ForetoldGabriel Garcia Marquez1981 – Available for check-out Warning: Some graphic languageSection 1: Pages 1-24Pages: 120Difficulty: ics: Murder, community, honor, memory, masculinity, sexism, shame, guilt, Columbia, Catholicism, chanceTeacher notes: My favorite read of 2018, this is a masterpiece of storytelling. I highly recommend going in cold and letting Marquez strip away the layers of this story piece by piece. You know what happens in the first sentence, but how and why are far more interesting.Murder on the Orient ExpressAgatha Christie1934 – Available for check-outSection 1: Pages 1-57Pages: 315Difficulty: ics: Mystery, murder, justice, investigation, and trains!Teacher notes: A fun read and a classic of the mystery genre, the book will seem lightweight compared to some of the more literary works we’ve been reading; however, the book prompts some essential and debatable questions about justice that will be well worth it at the end.Serial: Season 1Produced by Sarah Koenig2014—Available for free at , or wherever you download podcasts.Warning: Graphic language, topicsThere is a censored version available on YouTube, but I have not previewed it. Section 1: Episodes 1 & 2Length: 12 episodes (8.5 total hours)Difficulty: ics: High school, relationships, truth, gossip, memory, murder, criminal justice system, non-fiction, BaltimoreTeacher notes: All-time most popular podcast for a reason. Koenig is marvelous in how she considers both sides to the case as well as all the details and complexities that she can find. Binge-worthy.Note: Yes, I am willing to credit listening to this podcast as reading. No, your eyes will not move across a page. Yes, you will need to focus and think critically in order to comprehend the text. Consider it 21st century literacy. Listening still requires focus, so be careful about how you choose to multi-task. Doing dishes while listening will probably work. Doing math while listening will probably not work. ................
