(Unless you took Theatre ? last year.) Bring your best ideas and we will teach you how to take those ideas and make a play. You will learn that a play is not written, it is rewritten. Come with THREE ideas. Brainstorm the ideas using the form on the next page. The plays we will be writing will only be 10-20 minutes in length. Your stories do not need to be epically long ideas. They only need a BEGINNING, MIDDLE, and END. Just one sentence describing each part.5 Characters is the MAXIMUM, 3 Characters is the MINIMUM. Come with stories that are clear and to the point.Look at your own life for ideas. Everyone has a story worth telling on a stage, it is just a matter of HOW you tell the story. For example: Waiting for Godot is a play about two characters waiting for someone to show up (spoiler alert: he never actually arrives). This play is considered a landmark work and is performed all over the world. Simple idea—creative execution. When you are learning to write—select topics about which you already have an understanding. If you have a laptop, or tablet with a keyboard bring it to camp. We will work to have other writing locations set-up, but it will be helpful if some of you already have a way to type. But to be clear: A LAPTOP IS NOT REQUIRED. The following page(s) are to help you brainstorm and flesh out your ideas. They do not need to be typed (can be if you would like), but their purpose is to get you started in the writing process. It will allow you to spend time actually writing, as opposed to sitting there trying to come up with an idea when you are at camp. Prepare for your ideas to potentially not be that great—it takes work to get an idea to a place where it is ready to be on a stage. Don’t be discouraged if it does not come easily. The goal of this particular part of camp is to cultivate plays for our New Works Festival this spring, but also to give you a tool that can serve you well in the real world.NOW…GET WRITING!
