Jillian Ross, APRNPreparing for Oral Food Challenges1. You will be expected to bring the food being challenged to our office. Please see the food chart listed below for suggestions of what foods you can bring for your child. It is best to bring a few different items when possible to provide choices for your child (for example, for a peanut food challenge you may bring dry roasted peanuts, peanut butter, peanut M&M’s or Bamba).2. Please check food labels carefully to be sure the food you are bringing in is NOT cross contaminated with other foods your child may be allergic to (for example: Barney almond butter is made in a peanut free facility and is not cross contaminated with other tree nuts; many tree nuts sold at Trader Joe’s are also safe without cross contamination but check the food label carefully to be sure).3. ***Please limit yourself or child to a small meal or snack prior to coming in for the food challenge to ensure you/your child will be able to eat the full serving of the food/ beverage being testing.4. Be sure to bring in a favorite cracker or bread if the food challenge is for a nut, soy butter or sunflower butter; 5. Stop any medications containing antihistamine for 3-5 days prior to the appointment; a. Zyrtec, Claritin and Xyzal must be stopped 5 days prior to any testing or food challenge appointment.b. Allegra, Dymista and azelastine nasal spray must be stopped 3 days prior to any testing or food challenge appointment.c. Benadryl must be stopped 2 days prior to any testing or food challenge appointment.d. Allergy eye drops must be stopped 24 hours before any testing or food challenge appointment.6. Food challenge appointments are long. Please plan to be with us on average for 2 1?2 - 3 1?2 hours. Your child will be fed increasing doses of food in timed increments. Once the serving size is completed, your child will be monitored for another 1-2 hour Food Challenge SuggestionsAlmonds: You will need to bring about 25 almonds Please bring dry roasted almonds (Wonderful brand, Valley Harvest Nut Company or Trader Joe’s brand) or Barney Almond Butter (found in the specialty food aisles at Stop & Shop or on Amazon) Baked Cheese: Amy’s 12-inch cheese pizza cooked at 425 degrees for 13 minutes until the cheese is completely melted, and beginning to bubble and brown on the top; ***if your child is gluten free or wheat allergic, please use a 12-inch wheat/gluten free pizza crust, tomato sauce of choice and 1?2 cup low moisture, part skim cow’s milk shredded mozzarella cheese cooked as above.Baked Egg: Please follow baked egg recipe exactly as instructed; recipe is on our website. *It is ok to add mashed bananas, blueberries, applesauce, cinnamon, chocolate chips to recipe. Please keep in mind you will need to use a large muffin tin due to added volume.Baked Milk: Please follow baked milk recipe exactly as instructed; recipe is on our website. *It is ok to add mashed bananas, blueberries, applesauce, cinnamon, Enjoy Life chocolate chips to recipe; please keep in mind you will need to use a large muffin tin due to added volume.Brazil Nuts: You will need 10-12 Brazil nuts which can be found at Trader Joe’s Cashews: You will need to bring 16-20 cashews (Trader Joe’s brand or Sunshine Nut Company brand) or Larabar Cashew Cookie or Kevala cashew butter (can be purchased from Amazon)Fish: 4-5 ounces of finned fish. Please prepare it a way you or your child would prefer with ingredients you/they have eaten several times in the past; avoid any new ingredients, spices or sauces that have not been previously eaten. Hazelnuts: You will need to bring 25 dry roasted hazelnuts (Trader Joe’s) or 2 tablespoons of NutellaLegumes: 1?4 - 1?2 cup of cooked green peas, chick peas, or beans or for children <18 months of age bring puréed pouches containing legumes Macadamia Nuts: You will need to bring 12-14 macadamia nuts (Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company or Hawaii’s Local Buzz brand) Mustard: Mustard (any type including honey mustard) – 1 teaspoon (please bring foods that have been previously eaten such as pretzels, bread sticks, hot dogs or chicken tenders to dip into the mustard) Peanut Butter: Bamba – 1 single serving 0.7 oz bag (strongly recommended for children <18 months of age; found in kosher food section at Stop & Shop or on Amazon) or 30 dry roasted peanuts or Peanut M&M’s – 1 single serving bag typically contains 22-26 candies or Peanut butter (we recommend Jif Whips, Jif or Skippy for better child-pleasing flavor vs sugar free, sodium free products) or Larabar peanut butter cookie Pecans: 18-20 pecans are needed (Trader Joe’s brand, Cello Pecans, Pearson Farm or Surratt Farms) or Larabar Pecan Pie. You may also dip the pecans in chocolate, applesauce or yogurt, or glaze the pecans with sugar.Pine Nuts: 1/4 cup pine nuts (American Pine Nuts, New Mexico Pinon Nut Company or WholeSalePineNuts)Pistachios: 40 pistachios are needed (Wonderful brand of pistachios (found in produce section at Stop & Shop) or Trader Joe’s brand) or Fiddyment Pistachio Nut Butter (available on Amazon) Sesame: Sesame seed bagel (ok to bring butter or cream cheese if desired) or sesame seed bread sticks or cracker or hummus made with tahini-2 tablespoons or tahini spread-2 teaspoonsShellfish: 4-5 ounces of shellfish; please prepare it a way you or your child would prefer with ingredients you/they have eaten several times in the past; avoid any new ingredients, spices or sauces that have not been previously eaten Soy: Soy milk (8 oz) or 1 container of soy yogurt-any flavor or edamame (approximately 40-45) Straight Egg: French toast: crack one large egg into a bowl and whisk until well beaten; soak one piece of bread into the egg on both sides; transfer to a pan; if any egg remains in the bowl, pour the remaining egg over the slice of bread and cook thoroughly; it is ok to add vanilla or cinnamon to your egg mixture if desired; please feel to bring maple syrup or1 scrambled egg or 1 hardboiled eggStraight Milk: Lactose free cow’s milk (8 oz) or 1 container lactose free yogurt (any flavor) or1 cup lactose free vanilla ice cream*Please bring a small cooler with cooler packs to keep your food items cold.**Avoid French vanilla flavors if you or your child also has an egg allergy as egg is often an ingredient in this flavor.Sunflower Seeds: Sunflower seeds – 2 tablespoons (David’s) or Sun Butter 2 tablespoonsWalnuts: 15 walnuts are needed (Trader Joe’s brand, Daniels Farm, Fillmore Farms, Haag Farm).
