February's Meeting

February's meeting once again had a very good turnout both people & model wise. The evening's theme of red stars and red cars (and trucks) found 16 aircraft, 2 armor pieces and 25 vehicles out on display in theme.

Joe Smith was on hand selling books from the collection of the late John D'alessandro.

Business Meeting

Reported by Tony Wootson

The business meeting began at around 8:30. Since John C. was under the weather, the Club's Vice Pres. Dennis did the honors.

Darryl Peters talked about the creation of a new modeling club in Allentown. Lehigh Valley Scale Modelers, who are being sponsored by HobbyTown USA, and will have (had) their first meeting on January 23 at 6:30 pm. They meet at the HobbyTown Store located at the Tilghman Square Shopping Center, at 4642 Broadway Road, Suite B-11 in Allentown, PA. For more information, you can contact either Darryl Peters at (908) 479-1349 or call Jeff Wieder at (484) 232-6386 or email him at Jeffro21@.

Jim Durso made several announcements pertaining to an upcoming Bare-Metal Foil demonstration at Jenkintown Hobbies in March, a possible MITI program later on in the year at the same location and a MITI program that M&G Hobbies would like to conduct later on this year as well. (See Jim's notes found below for the details).

Craig Bennett made an announcement pertaining to the Battleship New Jersey. Evidently things are somewhat still up in the air, but the guy in charge is looking for ship models to display at the Battleship. They are looking for donations, along with making plans to pay someone to build some of these kits. In addition, they are planning on holding model contests there. (For more information, see Craig).

The models of John D'alessandro will be auctioned off at our April meeting. A correction was made at our meeting. All proceeds from the auction will go to John's wife. (So again, spread the word around and be sure to bring a little extra cash with you to our April meeting).

John Rucks shared with us an idea of his. He belongs to another modeling club that has been holding something they call a "Mini-Con." The idea behind the "Mini-Con" is this: club members enter one new model a month into an on-going popular choice contest that lasts throughout the year. This contest would take place 10 months out of the year for us, (with the exclusion of the 2 months that we hold our regular contests). Club members then choose a first, second and third place model for that month.

Points are given for the first, second, and third place winners - 10 points go to the builder of the first place model, 5 points go to the second and 3 to the third.

Someone with a digital camera would take a picture of the first place model and its builder, and John Cunningham would add the image to a certificate that would be awarded to the winner the following month.

In December, the points are tallied up for the year, and in January, a "cheesy trophy" - (John's words here- Ed.) - would be awarded to the "DVSM Modeler of the Year." Then, the next contest will start all over again.

John proposed that we discuss this idea further at our March meeting. In addition, since we will already be in the third month of the year, if we decide to try this out, we may want to wait until 2003 to do so.

Last item here. I approached Dennis Levy last month with the idea of adding a separate Junior Modeler's Category to our Gold-Silver-Bronze Contest that takes place in June. With the handful of junior modeler's that appear to belong to our club members, I thought this would be a good way to give the kids some recognition for their work and efforts, along with potentially helping to groom a new batch of Del Val Modelers for the future.

Dennis liked the idea. There are still some details to work out prior to our June Contest, though.

Additional News and Updates

An apology to Vern and John

I made a "boo-boo" in last month's newsletter. In my rush to get the document mailed out on time, I neglected to mention the nice clinic on figure painting that Vern Minkwitz and John Wlas conducted during our January Meeting. (Sorry Guys).

For those of you who have access to the Web, I have posted a number of pics from their clinic at ).

Another mistake in the Newsletter?

Naww! Just a trick played on yours truly. That guy John Rucks bamboozled me!

The very insightful and "touching" article that our dear friend John submitted to me and that I posted in last month's Newsletter was a fallacy. A "1/32 scale F.M.A., I.A. 58 'Pucara' Lazlo, manufactured by Buenos Aires, Argentina" does not exist, and it never has! John made the whole story up.

John had written that piece a number of years ago and proceeded to distribute it. He ended up getting himself into a bit of trouble with some of our more "accuracy-minded" IPMS brethren. (I thought I remembered reading that article sometime in the past - Really!!).

The next time I receive a "review" of an aircraft from John, I think I'll run it by one of our resident aircraft specialists, like Joe Smith or John Goschke.

The upcoming ECHS, a M&TI Program (and Iwata)?

Well, after conversing with both Jim Rosado and Jim Durso, I decided to try to determine the status of this year's Make & Take It program at the East Coast Hobby Show. I had initially determined that this program appeared to be dead.

However, after receiving a phone call from Jim Durso, it appears that the program may still come to be. Scott Pressman, (the guy running the ECHS) contacted Jim to determine if we were still interested in participating in a M&TI program. It was discovered that IMMA wouldn’t be donating any kits this year. However, Scott said that he could probably get 500 models donated from various vendors.

Scott and Jim will try to work out the particulars prior to our next Del Val meeting. Jim will announce what has been determined then. If they decide to try to conduct the program, they (naturally) will need some volunteers to assist with it.

Some additional news on the ECHS is that John Goschke sent me an email message from a fellow named John Smith, who works for the Iwata Company. Iwata was looking for a number of modelers to conduct seminars on the use of their airbrushes at the show this year.

I emailed the message out to those whose email addresses I have, but no one replied back expressing interest. Sooo, I ended up stepping forward to participate, along with Joe Baxter and Joe Smith.

I should have some Iwata brochures and supplies to display at our next meeting.

Remaining Items

Found below, directly after the PACM News is an article that I wrote on the ModelRama 4 that recently took place. You can check out the corresponding Web article (that contains a BUNCH of pictures) at:

.

I had planned to also list below both the notes that Keith Jones supplied on his clinic on "Weathering 101 for Cars," along with the notes that I took from Vinnie and Mark's clinic on Diorama Groundwork. Unfortunately, I ran out of space in this month's Newsletter. (For those of you wondering, any more than 4 single sheets of paper in an envelope raises the postage up to more than the standard 34¢ fee).

I have posted both articles at Del Vals Web Site, though. Keith's outline is located at: , while the notes from Vinnie and Marks' clinic can be found at:

.

I will try to add hardcopies of the notes from both clinics into a future newsletter.

PACM News

Reported by Jim Durso

Okay, the anti-snow dance is working so far and once again a marvelous display of vehicles, mainly in red (appeared) to support the month's theme.

With the start of race season on Feb 17, we will celebrate Nascar as the theme for March's meeting. Hard to believe it's almost been a year since we lost Dale; and even more difficult is the fact that as agreed with my wife, the color cutout of Earnhardt that's been standing on top of my living room TV set since February of last year, will have to be retired and sent down to the hobby room display cabinet. But I still get the last laugh; my sister-in-law gave me a #3 Monte Carlo universal remote control for Christmas, which will be a permanent part of the living area now because, well...it's a necessary piece of electronics.

On March 2nd, DVSM members John Goschke, Ron Picciani, Charlie Lockhard and Jim Durso will be presenting a clinic on the uses of Bare Metal Foil at Jenkintown Hobby Center at 11:00 am. Uses covered will be for automotive, aircraft, masking and others. If you would like to attend to add your 5¢ worth or just get some pointers, come on out.

The hobby shop is also interested in hosting a MITI during the Jenkintown car show on June 30th. If you are interested in helping, let us know ASAP.

We are projecting a MITI also for M&G Hobby for April 27. This date needs to be confirmed by them after they check their sign up sheet.

In October, they are planning a model contest or workshop. Also of importance are the Christian Cruisers Car/model car shows, scheduled for May 18 and Sept 7 (with rain dates). The model car exhibit is a big part of these shows and highly anticipated. So, your participation in displaying your model cars is much appreciated. I will also need additional help to set up and supervise the model car exhibit this year, since my duties as president of the Christian Cruisers will be pulling my attention in several directions.

Keith Jones presented a nice workshop on basic weathering for automotive subjects. As you have seen, Keith does a lot of junk, beat up type cars and trucks, and gave us a good insight into the materials and techniques needed. If you weren't there, he has a nice handout to help you get started.

Many DVSM members attended the ModelRama Show and the awards going to our members were impressive. Ed Isnardi received (one of the awards for) best diorama; Carmin Guzman drove away with (one of the awards) in the advanced category and Ariel Hernanzez (Mr. 3 for 3) received awards for best novice category for his first three builds. Nice work everybody.

There are questions about what to do for our next club project. We are open to your suggestions, but we can't act on them if you keep them to yourselves. What would you like to do; a common project; a composite or diorama with everyone building a piece of the overall subject? Start thinking and let's discuss it. Personally, I'm still leaning towards the auto-train.

Ed Isnardi has been bringing down his North Jersey/New York buddies to our meetings. Though members of clubs much closer to their homes, they seem to enjoy the PACM crowd and we appreciate their making the long ride down. I know some of our members are planning on making some of the meetings up north and that's really a nice gesture. At this year's NNL in Parsippany (on March 23), we will meet with reps from all the area clubs to discuss a multi-club bash (no competition) for just fun and talk. Initially, we will be collecting contact names and phone numbers so we know whom to call with planning info.

M&G Hobby has offered to pre-order new kits for us when they are announced, so there will enough to go around when they arrive. For further information on this, call or e-mail Tommy Kortman.

Hobby Heaven's website has an update of new kit releases for this year.

Tony Wootson is talking to his contact for the East Coast Hobby Show to see if they will be doing a MITI this year. Much of this is dependent on IMMA's response to kit requests. We should know more at our next meeting. Until then, if you should stop by Wal-Mart, ask them, "If you keep lowering prices everyday, how come nothing is free yet?"

ModelRama 4

(…A unique, fun-filled plastic model show)

February 11, 2002

by Tony Wootson

Three weeks ago on Saturday, January 19th, I attended the ModelRama 4 Show. It was held at The National Conference Center at the Ramada Inn in East Windsor,

New Jersey, (just off of Exit 8 on the N. J. Turnpike).

As the show’s title indicates, this was the fourth one that the organizer of the event, Tim Lingle has held. (It had been a number of years, though, since Tim’s previous ModelRama Show had taken place).

Getting Started

The morning of the show started out with a major question mark up in the air. A “substantial” snowstorm was scheduled to arrive in the area later on that day and I wasn’t sure what to expect.

However, at around 9:15 am, my eldest son Anthony and I got into the car and made our way up north to the show. We both had a number of models that we were bringing for the popular choice contest that was being held.

I had several sci-fi spacecraft – (the Jupiter 2 from the Lost In Space Movie and one of my Babylon-5 Starfuries), along with a large 1:6 scale Horizon DC Comics STEEL figure.

In addition, I had picked up two of Tommy Kortman’s kits the previous evening for the contest - (his 57’ Chrysler 300C and his USMC AAVP7A1 - Amphibious Assault Vehicle).

Anthony brought along with him three of the Gundams that he had built last year, along with a Liger Zero “model” (Zoid) that he had obtained from a Toys R Us store the day before. Anthony had promptly assembled the 125-part kit when he arrived home – nothing like enthusiasm for model building in kids to help them complete a kit. (Maybe I can borrow some of his)?

We arrived at the show at around 9:45, shortly after it had started. My first indication of what was in store for us was when we ran into fellow DVSM club member Bob Doebly in the parking lot. (It's nice running into a familiar face at an unfamiliar location).

Anthony and I unpacked our stuff and made our way into the Ramada Inn. In addition to the models, I had also brought along materials to conduct a clinic on Basic Seam Filling and Sanding.

A couple of minutes later we were in. I paid the $5.00 per person admission fee, spoke a bit with Tim, and proceed to set up my models. The tables were already full, so finding room turned out to be a challenge. However, very shortly the models were out on display.

The Crowd, Attendees and Vendors

As I mentioned, it was real nice seeing a whole lot of

familiar faces at the show. There were 6 or 7 members

from the Central Jersey Plastic Modeler’s Society - (a

club that I use to belong to) in attendance.

In addition, there were also around 11Del Val members and their kids in attendance. Included were Craig Bennett, Fred Bowers (and his son Joshua), Jim Rosado (and his daughter Christiana and niece Andrea), Bob Doebly, Carmen Guzman, Ed Isnardi (and his daughter) and Ariel Hernanzez. In addition, there were probably some other club members on hand as well, (whose names I can't recollect - a thousand pardons, guys).

All in all, the crowd ended up numbering around 100, despite the threat of the approaching snowstorm.

I also recognized quite a few Vendors who were on hand, from model shows that I had attended in the past.

There were probably around 6 – 8 vendors occupying 20 tables that were situated along the room’s perimeter.

The Contest – A Popular Choice with a Twist?

The contest that was held at this particular ModelRama Show was different from previous ones. While they had traditionally been popular choice contests, this go-round Tim decided to have categories set up according to the Modeler’s Skill Level, as opposed to the model’s subject matter. This, in effect found dissimilar types of models competing against each other.

The following categories were set up: a Junior Division, a Novice Division, an Intermediate Division, an Advanced Division, along with a Diorama Division, (that was opened to all skill levels).

Five individual awards were given out in each category, along with a Best of Show Winner.

The Models

As I mentioned, there were alotta models out on display. All told, around 130 models ended up gracing the long tables found in the center of the room.

What was also nice was the quality found in the models. Regardless of the associated category, they all looked very good.

Tim’s Famous ModelRama Auction

For those of you who’ve never attended a ModelRama Show, the auction that is conducted is a highlight. There are some very high quality kits and modeling supplies that are auctioned off, along with some very low starting bids - (I have no idea how Tim is able to do this). The auction is always a hit.

Due to the approaching snowstorm, Tim decided to speed things up. Instead of conducting one auction later in the day, he held two, with the first starting earlier than originally scheduled. Yours truly ended up winning a Hasegawa 1:48 scale F/A-18D Hornet, (that generally runs in the $50 - $75 range) for $25.00. In addition, I won a High Grade Gundam for my son for $5.00.

Getting kids into building models

Another attribute of Tim's is his passion for getting kids actively involved in model building. His ModelRama Shows are indicative of this. During the show, Tim requested that all kids in attendance come up and they received a new FREE kit each!" (Anthony's eyes bulged out when he heard this).

My Clinic

Shortly before the first auction, I conducted my clinic on Basic Seam Filling. I waited for a modest crowd to gather and proceeded to run through the helpful hints that I’ve both learned from others, along with discovering on my own through trial-and-error. These dealt with gluing models together, along with filling in the associated seams that sometimes result.

I imagine that my seminar was well received, since all of the handouts that I had brought along were distributed.

The second auction, the tallying of the ballots and the Contest Results

Shortly after my clinic ended Tim held his second auction. Since what little money I had brought with me had been exhausted – (I hadn’t planned on buying anything at the show – REALLY!) – the second auction was a blur. (Anthony didn’t realize it, but that first auction had wiped out the money I had planned on spending on our lunch – Oh well, a good ole' Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich always hits the spot with him anyway ().

After the second auction had concluded and the balloting was closed, the votes were tallied and the results announced.

I, (alas), didn’t win anything. Actually, with all of the stiff competition that existed in the advanced category, I really hadn’t expected to place.

However, quite a few Del Val members placed. Ariel Hernandez received three awards for his entries in the Novice Category. Both Fred B. and Craig receive awards in the Intermediate Category for ships that they had entered. Ed Isnardi received an award in the Diorama Category. Carmin Guzman took one of the five awards in the Advanced Category. And finally, (last but not least), it was nice discovering that my son was one of the winners in the Junior Category. In addition, Fred's son Josh took another one of the five awards. (WELL DONE!)

Time to go home, (a bit early?)

After the winners were announced and the awards presented, everyone promptly began packing up. Tim had shed 30 to 45 minutes off of his show and a good thing too. Snow flurries had starting coming down.

Anthony and I packed up our models, along with my other items, got into the car and departed, (just as the snow started to come down hard).

Conclusion

All in all, ModelRama 4 was a very enjoyable event - (to me at least). I got a chance to hang out with a lot of old and new modeling friends. In addition, I got the opportunity to view a lot of very nicely built models. I got a chance to pick up that Hasegawa F/A-18 Hornet (for a steal). Finally, I was very pleased to see so many members from our club place in the contest, along with being proud to see Anthony take something home for his efforts that he had put into his models - All of this, for the reasonable fee of $10.00.
