Structuring praise and worship

There are no set patterns for exactly how we should lead the music in a service, but many people have an approach that they find helps them “enter the Holy of Holies”, and lead the others in to worship. Some churches have twenty minutes of music at the start of the service, some have ten minutes, others feel led by the Spirit as to how long worship will be, before the preacher begins. Most worship leaders will start with a couple of high energy Praise songs, in which the congregation can offer thanks. For example…

Celebrate, Jesus, Celebrate

Come on and celebrate

Show your power, Lord

Some worship leaders will start with a welcoming song, such as:

Come, now is the time to worship

For kids worship, songs such as “The welcome song” can break the ice, and kids can partner up and do actions!

Recognisable choruses, such as

Power in the blood

O Happy Day

My Shackles are Gone

are generally effective for focusing peoples minds on what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for them, and are particularly good for baptismal services!

After Praise, we can enter into worship with some slower meditative songs, or hymns, such as

How deep the Father’s love,

My Jesus, My Saviour, or

The Servant King

Lets take songs we’ve learned, and play through a praise and worship programme…

Chorus

This is just one example of how we might put a programme together, but everybody has their own way of constructing the programme, and the best thing to do is to pray, and ask God what songs to play! Learning and introducing new songs is an essential part of keeping our worship fresh for God. We could play a new song to teach the congregation, but don’t overdo it, as people don’t appreciate all of the songs being new, as it’s very hard to worship if you don’t know any of the songs!

Dominant 7th chords

The chord type we haven’t looked at in great detail yet is the 7th chord. (We’ve covered G7.) Here’s some of the most common 7th chords.

Using the 7th chord to join songs

Ok, so we don’t always want to stop between songs! In order to get some flow into worship, we can join songs together, using the 7th chord! Of course, we don’t need to if the songs are in the same key as one another, but supposing we’re playing in G, and we want to change to C, smoothly. Play G7 in between, for a smoother change into the new key:

Lord, I lift your name on high finishes

C / D / G /

And Crown Him with many crowns starts on C, so we can “pivot” on G7…

C / D / G / / G7

C / Am / F / / /

C / F / G / / /

Practise this a few times, and you should hear the G7 pulling towards the new key, C !

So, now anytime you have to change from G to C, G7 smoothes out the change! Next time we’ll have a look at where the other 7th chords can “join up” songs.
